Your Sunshine: Girls, Guns, Gangsters, and Good-looking Guys

8 min read

Introduction

Chinese dramas set during the Republican Era (roughly 1912-1949) are popular for their historical settings and often feature themes of romance, politics, and intrigue. This period followed centuries of imperial rule and was a time of significant social and political change in China. The social and political upheaval creates a fertile ground for romantic entanglements, secret societies, and espionage, providing plenty of material for captivating storylines.

In this drama, I noticed four G elements I used for the article title:

Girls

Strong Female Characters: Women often play central roles in these dramas, as revolutionaries, spies, femme fatales, or individuals fighting for their survival and ideals amidst the turmoil. In Your Sunshine, the main and supporting female are portrayed as strong, capable, and independent characters.

Guns

Guns and Violence: With the prevalence of warfare and gang activity, scenes involving firearms, combat, and violence are often integral to the plots, adding to the dramatic tension and highlighting the dangers of the era. There are a lot of gunfights and physical combats (with or without weapons) in this drama. Due to the censorship, they are downplayed, blurred, or presented less graphically.

Gangsters

Gangsters and their networks: The chaos of the time created opportunities for organized crime to flourish, leading to characters like powerful gang leaders or individuals caught up in criminal underworlds. To avoid spoilers, I will not reveal who belongs to which secret organization in this drama.

Good-looking guys

No need for written explanation, lol. I will just let you see clips about them in the video below. (compilation from Weibo, credit to: 苏梓柯

Synopsis

In the early 20th century, the Yins and the Lus were two prominent families in Tangcheng. As time went on, the Lu family fell into decline, and internal strife broke out within the Yin family. To escape mounting debts, the Lu family’s younger daughter, Lu Ye, faked her death and fled abroad, while the elder daughter, Lu Yi, married Yin Zhuo Feng—the second son of the Yin family—to protect the Lus. Years later, Lu Yi dies unexpectedly. Lu Ye returns from overseas to attend her sister’s funeral and reunites with her former brother-in-law, Yin Zhuo Feng. In the process, she uncovers a web of connections between Lu Yi’s death and a mysterious organization known as Yixin (One Heart) Society. Determined to seek justice, Lu Ye becomes Yin Zhuo Feng’s disciple and joins Bronze Leaf, an underground group he leads. She vows to become a blade of vengeance. As the two spend more time together, feelings quietly blossom between master and disciple, and a long-buried secret crush gradually comes to light. As truths about Lu Yi’s identity and the intertwined history of the Yin and Lu families are revealed, the two begin to unravel the mystery behind Yixin Society. After surviving numerous life-and-death trials, Feng and Ye ultimately find love and embark on a shared path of justice. (source: iQiyi)

Clarification on the synopsis

First of all, let me clarify the marriage between Yin Zhuo Feng and Lu Yi. Romancing one’s ex-brother-in-law can be a sensitive topic and viewer’s reaction to such a relationship vary greatly depending on cultural and personal beliefs.

This is a Republican Era drama. Arranged marriages, particularly among rich and powerful families, persisted as strategic alliances, consolidating wealth, power, and prestige between prominent families. Their marriage was arranged by the family elders.

In Episode 1, it’s said that Lu Yi died on the wedding eve. Legally, she wasn’t married to Yin Zhuo Feng, yet. However, in Chinese culture, the terms “married to” and “in-law” are used for family members acquired through marriage, even before the formal wedding. This is because the concept of family in Chinese culture emphasizes a strong sense of belonging and integration, even before a legal marriage ceremony.

Besides, there was no love between Yin Zhuo Feng and Lu Yi. SPOILER below!

He loves someone else, and she loved someone else.

Characters

The above relationship chart shows three other supporting characters not listed in the character breakdown. They are:

Top middle: Yin Lei, Yin Zhuo Feng’s uncle and Yin Huan Yan’s father

Bottom middle: Jia Fan, member of Bronze Leaf

Bottom right (the masked guy): Priest, the mysterious Ding Xi’s boss

Main Characters

Jiang Zhi Nan ( 姜之南 ) as Lu Ye

Caesar Wu ( 吴希泽 ) as Yin Zhuo Feng

Review

Production and Directing

Your Sunshine was produced by Sugar-Free Culture ( 无糖文化 ), which was known for producing hit Chinese short dramas such as A Familiar Stranger ( 虚颜 ), The Killer is Also Romantic ( 念念无明 ), and Butterflied Lover ( 风月变 ), to name a few. The founder of the production company is Du Hao, who was also the director of this drama.

The cinematography of the dramas he directed is quite good. The director seemed skilled in directing actors on stage and arranging the visual elements of the production to create visually engaging and dramatically effective scenes. From his other drama works, he is good at shooting emotional and romantic scenes, too.

Story and Plot

The themes of the drama are:

  • Lu Ye’s relentless pursuit of justice for her sister’s mysterious death and her desire to avenge her family’s downfall.
  • The drama focuses on the unraveling of a web of connections, family secrets, and the truth behind a powerful underground organization.
  • Despite the dangerous circumstances, an unexpected romance blossoms between Lu Ye and Yin Zhuo Feng, exploring how love can emerge even in difficult times. There is also a secondary couple’s story.
  • The intertwined history of the Yin and Lu families and the sacrifices made to protect loved ones underline the importance of family ties and loyalty.
  • Lu Ye’s journey from a young woman who is naive to the social upheaval and political intrigue of the era to a determined adult seeking justice highlights themes of personal growth and transformation.

The story is a bit exaggerated, both cheesy and quirky, but with a touch of warmth and humor. The pacing is quite confusing. In the beginning, there are some scenes where Lu Ye joined the Bronze Leaf and started training to be a fighter. However, there was also what I think unnecessary filler plot about Jia Fan, the guy from Bronze Leaf. Meanwhile, other characters don’t have a more detailed plot, for example, the love story of Yin Huan Yuan with the woman he loved was not convincing to the point that he would avenge her.

Characterization and Acting

Some characterizations are a bit humorous (especially the relationship between Yin Zhuo Feng and his younger brother Yin Zhuo Qian. Each character has their own memorable scenes.

The brotherhood

The Yin brothers can be described as: poor eldest brother, happy second brother, humble third brother, and helpless fourth brother.

The scenes where they start working together are very touching. At first, the cousin, Yin Huan Yuan, was competitive and distrustful of his cousins. Later, they build strong bonds and support each other for the sake of the Yin family. The video above when the four brothers walk together is a result of the family unity.

The romance

The main couple’s romance was the focus of the drama. Yin Zhuo Feng and Lu Ye’s relationship has a forbidden-love vibe, being in-laws. However, I already explained above in the Clarification of the Synopsis about their in-law situation. Because of their situation, there’s the extreme push-and-pull of the main couple’s interactions, and it’s really very restrained. Their chemistry was really good, and all the subtle emotions are expressed very well. I love the scenes where they work together to take down the bad guys.

I wish that the secondary couple’s interaction between Yin Zhuo Yi and Ding Xi had been explored more deeply. After their unique relationship started, the secondary couple is much more interesting than the main couple.

I appreciate that there is no love triangle or crazy character who wants to destroy a relationship.

Cinematography and Special Effects

Cinematography

The composition of the scenes is good, and the actors’ fight scenes are well done. In the fight scenes, everyone’s stances and momentum are quite decent, and they all love to play with knives.

I particularly love the fighting scenes between Lu Ye and Xiao Jin Zhi. They actually organized a formal fighting scene between the girls! The dramatic scenes are emotional and convincing.

However, rhythm-wise, there are a lot of slow-motion shots. I also noticed unnecessary slow-motion shots in Du Hao’s other drama, Be Your Knight ( 他似火 ), in which he was also the director.

The excessive usage of big/flood lights to create a halo effect around a subject for dramatic looks.

Costumes

The costumes, especially for the female outfits, are stunning. There is are mix-match style of Chinese and Western, Republican-era and modern.

My favorite costumes are Yin Zhuo Yi’s long coats, Yin Huan Yuan’s colorful clothes, Lu Ye’s feminine dresses, and Ding Xi’s elegant dresses.

The flamboyant Yin Huan Yuan

Set and Props

Too many guns and booze. Almost in every scene, the characters drink alcohol and play with guns and knives easily. I know that characters carrying weapons, drinking alcohol, and smoking tobacco/opium are symptoms of the social and political turmoil of the time. Those lifestyles are coping mechanisms for characters facing hardship, loss, or societal pressures, reflecting the broader struggles of the era. However, can they just drink tea in some formal meetings?

Background Music

There are some critics of the loud and chaotic background music used, which often drowns out the dialogue. I didn’t particularly notice it because there were times I lowered the volume or even muted it, due to the surrounding situation that demanded less noise when I watched this drama.

Conclusion

Actually, Your Sunshine is not bad. The visual quality is quite good, and since it’s a low-budget web series, I didn’t expect too much. I could tell that the production team put a lot of effort into it; almost every scene is thoughtfully designed, which is commendable.

The visuals are the strong point of this drama, from production values to eye candy actors. The character designs are quite interesting and the acting is not bad. The plot seems to be the problem.

In this era, where makeshift productions are rampant, even if it’s not perfect, earnest effort from Sugar-Free Culture is worth it.
