The Company: Drama Info and Recap Episodes 1 to 9

21 min read

Introduction

Finally, China made a true time-travel drama! Of course, this would be categorized as ‘science-fiction’ to pass the censorship, since the time-travel device came from the far future, the 31st century to be exact. Additionally, the narrative is not a straight time-travel adventure, but it explores themes of time, destiny, and the human stories behind the ancient artifacts. These objects are vessels for human memories, regrets, and emotions from different dynasties. Our time-traveler hero from the future, Bi Zhi, attempts to reverse a tragic fate and travels through time with the modern-day Su Beilu, to retrieve objects belonging to his deceased friend. Despite the ups and downs of life and the tragic backstories of the antiques, the narrative emphasizes facing one’s own destiny with hope and optimism. As Bi Zhi and Su Beilu hunt for treasures, they find personal healing. The quest serves as a metaphor for processing grief and finding a new purpose in the present, not only for the two heroes but also for the people who are involved in each era.

Artifact #1: Bronze Sword

Relationship Chart

Besides the main characters, Bi Zhi, Qin Ziyi, and Su Beilu, there are also Mr. Dong (bottom left), and Beilu’s colleagues Ren Xiaomin and Chun Ge (also Beilu’s best friend).

Episode 1

In ancient times, Bi Zhi was held by masked assassins. When he finally freed himself with the sacrifice of Qin Clan’s loyal general, he rushed back to the Qin residence, bringing a testimony to clear up his best friend’s name, Qin Ziyi. Too late, the residence was already engulfed in fire. The clan’s enemies burnt down the residence with Qin Ziyi inside. Bi Zhi was so heartbroken that he retreated to his residence, Ya She, meaning Silent House, and also the native name of this drama. This Ya She, and Bi Zhi were apparently immortal. They stayed, all the way to 2024, as an antique shop. Now, Bi Zhi is the antique shop owner.

While walking through an antique market, Bi Zhi overheard Mr. Dong talking about a nameless bronze sword. Bi Zhi was interested right away and even paid Mr. Dong handsomely. When Mr. Dong held the sword, he accidentally cut himself and was possessed by the sword’s spirit. Luckily, Bi Zhi was able to knock him down and control the sword. We found out that the bronze sword was one of Qin Ziyi’s artifact collections. When retrieving them in the past, Bi Zhi accidentally scattered them across the times. Now, his life goal was to find them one by one.

Bi Zhi got drunk in the memory of Qin Ziyi. When he passed out in front of the bar, a man helped him. He was Qin Ziyi lookalike, Su Beilu. Thinking that Beilu was Ziyi, Bi Zhi took him home. He mistakenly activated his time-traveling bracelet, causing Beilu to jump through several periods, hahaha. This Beilu, he also drank at the bar, so the next morning when he woke up, he thought he had a strange dream.

Eventually, Bi Zhi posed as a turtle owner to have an appointment with Beilu (he was a veterinarian assistant). After work, Beilu went to Ya She to bring meds for the turtle. Bi Zhi finally realized that although Beilu might be a reincarnation of Qin Ziyi, he didn’t have any recollection of his past. Disheartened, Bi Zhi decided to use his time portal to go to a certain time period. He was shocked when he found out that Beilu had followed him through the time portal!

Artifact #2: Yuwen / Fish-Patterned Mirror

Relationship Chart

Besides the main characters Bi Zhi, Su Beilu, Miao Tong, and supporting character Chu Qiu, the mirror holders were He Yi Yao from modern times (bottom left) and Li Yang Sheng from ancient times (bottom right).

Episode 2

At first, Bi Zhi lied that he and the people Beilu saw in ancient times were just cosplaying. Beilu was suspicious that what he saw was not fake, so he threatened Bi Zhi with his pet turtle. Bi Zhi finally confessed. He was from the future, the 31st century. Although humanity had achieved incredible technological leaps but lost the essence of real human connection. Bi Zhi was lonely. One day, in the year 3078, as a city planner, he found an unregistered time elevator. That was the time portal door of Ya She, so I would call it a time elevator from now on. Since he was lonely, he didn’t want to register the time elevator with the Time and Space Administration, which I would call TSA from now on. Instead, he used it to time-travel to the past. It was on his first time-traveling that he met Qin Ziyi.

Beilu became super excited and wanted to accompany Bi Zhi time-traveling. Bi Zhi refused, but Beilu managed to convince Bi Zhi, that with his sharp memory skills, Beilu could help Bi Zhi with his mission. Bi Zhi finally agreed, but with three rules. One, not creating conflicts. Two, not to alter people’s fate. Three, he must stay with Bi Zhi all the time. Y’know, those rules were bound to be broken, though!

Bi Zhi and Beilu then returned to ancient times, to a place called Chisha Town. Their mission? To retrieve a mirror called Yuwen or the Fish-Patterned Mirror. The problem was that the mirror was with the famous General Li Yansheng. In a banquet, they followed the general to a quiet place, and were surprised to hear that the general was conversing through the mirror with a woman! Probably like a modern day smart phone.

Bi Zhi knew that there would be an assassination attempt during this banquet, so they set out to save Li Yansheng. Grateful, the general offered a reward, but Bi Zhi wanted the mirror, claiming it was his family heirloom. The general refused, stating that the mirror once saved his life and was very important.

Failed to get the mirror, Bi Zhi waited for the next day, which Li Yansheng was supposed to die. The kindhearted Beilu couldn’t bear this and forgot the time-travel rule, so he rushed into the battlefield to save the general. Instead, Li Yansheng suspected they were enemy spies and captured them. However, he was bound to die anyway by falling off the cliff into the water. His Yuwen Mirror also fell into the water. Failed to retrieve the mirror, Bi Zhi and Beilu returned to the present day. In this era, time only passed one day.

Beilu wondered about the woman who was talking to Li Yansheng, and asked Bi Zhi to investigate. We went back to the year 2018. A wheelchair-bound woman named He Yiyao wanted to kill herself by jumping from the rooftop. Suddenly, the Yuwen Mirror on the shelf crackled with Li Yansheng’s voice! He was wounded on the battlefield. Li Yansheng saw her wanting to kill herself and urged her to cherish her life because only the living had hope. Yiyao’s mother saw that her daughter wanted to jump and rushed home. Just in time, Bi Zhi and Beilu also showed up to pull Yiyao back. Bi Zhi found the mirror, but he felt it was not the right time to take it from the desperate woman.

Episode 3

That was the first time Li Yansheng and He Yiyao met. They started talking and formed a bond across time. A few days in modern time equal to a month in ancient times. They helped each other to heal; she healed him from his wounds by modern health advice, and he healed her depression by showing the outdoors through the mirror he secured on his breastplate. Seeing her happy, Bi Zhi and Beilu, who watched her secretly, felt bad. However, Bi Zhi could only delay retrieving the mirror because every connection across time eventually leads to a painful parting.

One day, when Li Yansheng and He Yiyao were conversing, suddenly she saw an assassin attacking him from behind, and the mirror went dark. This was the time when he was killed, despite Beilu’s intervention last time. After that, there was no more Li Yansheng, and Yiyao became depressed. She decided to look for his info at the library and found that he died in the battle. When she was mourning Li Yansheng, Bi Zhi and Beilu approached her and Bi Zhi explained that the mirror didn’t belong to the modern era. However, Yiyao refused to let the mirror go. Although he died, the mirror was a memory of the man she loved.

Bi Zhi was reminded of his friendship with Qin Ziyi in the past. Ziyi ran away from the nobility’s bondage because he was set to inherit the future leadership. While in his runaway he met Bi Zhi and they became true friends. However, Ziyi was then caught by his clan’s soldiers to return to be the new City Lord.

While retrieving Ziyi’s treasures, Bi Zhi disrupted the anomalies, so the artifacts ended up in different times. He explained to Beilu that there was actually one mirror. After Ziyi’s death and the anomaly was disrupted, the mirror fell into Li Yansheng’s hands. After his death, the mirror was passed through generations and eventually was kept by Yiyao. However, because the mirror (and other artifacts) developed abnormal energy, Li Yansheng and He Yiyao could see each other and conversed.

The next day, after refusing to hand the mirror to Bi Zhi, Yiyao noticed a crude smiley face carved into the metal part of the mirror she hadn’t seen before. She realized this was Li Yansheng’s final message, carving the smiley symbol she taught him while he was dying. A reminder for her to stay strong and keep smiling even in his absence. Yiyao finally handed the mirror to Bi Zhi. At the end, we saw the dying Yansheng with the image of Yiyao touching his hand. He called her name, and she smiled. This was so heartbreaking. I didn’t know how many more bittersweet partings between people from different times!

Artifact #3: Wu Blade

Relationship Chart

The supporting characters in this artifact case, Wu Blade, were Lu Feng from the modern era and Xia Zelan from the ancient era. Regarding the mysterious silhouette, I guess that it was connected to the Kun Blade, and I suspected a character.

Episode 4

Bi Zhi wanted to ensure that Beilu was not Qin Ziyi, so he spied on Beilu. Either at work or at home, Beilu’s life was quite pathetic. At work, he had failed his veterinary licensing exam for three consecutive years, so now he was only a veterinary assistant. Because of that, he was broke and faced eviction. Bi Zhi stepped in to pay the rent. Beilu was very grateful. To comfort him, Bi Zhi took him to a special place called Tian Guang Xu or Tianguang Market.

Tianguang Market was a mysterious place that existed outside the boundaries of time; that being said, not of any specific dynasty. It’s under the jurisdiction of TSA in the 31st century, a wormhole or time rift. Tianguang Market connected different timelines, so people who stumbled here accidentally wore their own period clothing. They traded supplies while waiting for their chance to leave. Time stopped, time devices from sundials to smartwatches didn’t work here, and the Market’s appearance was always sunset.

Bi Zhi took Beilu to the owner of the Market, a stunning woman in a red dress, our Female Lead, Miao Tong. After all Beilu’s flattery on Miao Tong, Bi Zhi finally went down on his business with her, while Chu Qiu, Miao Tong’s Guard Captain, took Beilu for a tour. Bi Zhi traded the Yuwen Mirror with what he was looking for, the book of spacetime coordinates for the next antiquity. Bi Zhi also asked if Miao Tong ever seen his friend, Qin Ziyi or Su Beilu. Who knows, if objects could be affected by the anomaly, people could, too. Qin Ziyi went to Tianguang Market, and with the anomaly, ended up in the 21st century as Su Beilu. Miao Tong never seen Qin Ziyi in her jurisdiction, but she advised Bi Zhi to look up Beilu’s past; he might find something.

While Bi Zhi was doing business with Miao Tong, Beilu got separated from Chu Qiu and ended up kidnapped by Lu Feng and Xia Zelan. He was from the modern era, and she was from the ancient era. Both fell in love with each other in this time rift. They forced Beilu to row the boat so they could escape. The Market Lord later showed up and told them there was nothing they could do than cherishing each other while they were here. Once they left the Market, they would go back to their era. As a love token, Xia Zelan gave Lu Feng the Wu Blade, her mother’s heirloom, to carve the finest jade in the world. After Beilu was released and went back with Bi Zhi, Chu Qiu reported to Miao Tong the names of the rebellious couple. Miao Tong was shocked when she found out that the man’s name was Lu Feng. Hmmm…

Bi Zhi felt guilty that he caused Beilu to be kidnapped, so he treated Beilu a meal in an upscale restaurant, back in 2024. Beilu was suspicious that Bi Zhi actually was on his next mission, though. Sure enough, Bi Zhi was waiting for a man to appear. When the man did, Beilu recognized him as Lu Feng, his kidnapper. This Lu Feng was about 10 years older than his appearance in the Market. He was having a date with a social influencer named Nana. But the couple ended up in an argument. Upon further investigation of the current Lu Feng, they found out that this man was a renowned artist, and he was a womanizer. Beilu was upset because it seemed the man had forgotten his past lover from the Market. Bi Zhi explained that once someone left the Market, unless using Ya She or the time elevator, the person would forget everything about that place. Sure enough, Lu Feng didn’t even remember that he had kidnapped Beilu before.

Episode 5

Bi Zhi’s mission at this time was to retrieve Kunwu Blade, which came as a set of two blades, the Kun Blade and the Wu Blade, and he knew Lu Feng possessed the Wu Blade. I wonder if the Kun Blade was in Xia Zelan’s hand? Since Lu Feng would have a grand exhibition, Bi Zhi and Beilu posed as two businessmen, and Bi Zhi introduced himself as a representative of Rain Manor, the legendary estate known for its collection of rare treasures. He then revealed his true intention: to buy the Wu Blade, which he claimed was an heirloom belonging to a deceased friend.

Lu Feng almost forgot about the blade until he remembered a small knife he had used to carve the very work that launched his career. After locating the blade, the next day, he offered it to Bi Zhi for free. He hoped Bi Zhi would introduce him to the prestigious Rain Manor. After they left with the blade, Lu Feng’s famous world crumbled.

We were introduced to how Lu Feng and Xia Zelan met in Tianguang Market back in his time which was 2009. He stumbled upon a street food stall owned by Zelan. They traded skills; she cooked him fried rice, while he fixed her stall, and eventually they got closer and fell for each other. Lu Feng was a struggling artist when he ended up in the Market, while Zelan got lost in the mist in the mountain behind her home.

In the modern day, Lu Feng suffered from chronic stomach pain, and he landed in the hospital. During the surgery, unconscious, he finally remembered his days in Tianguang Market, as well as his earlier days after getting back to the real world. The memories had changed him because the anomaly of the Wu Blade had acted as a catalyst. Realizing the emptiness of his pursuit of fame, he donated all his assets to charity and rededicated himself to the pure creation of art. Unfortunately, although memories could return, not the past. Bi Zhi knew that without its partner, the Kun Blade, the Wu Blade’s energy remained unsettled.

Artifact #4: Renyu / Mermaid Candle

Relationship Chart

Chan Er was an orphan and a poor girl, and A Nuan was the mermaid coming from the blue candle. Jiang Ling was a young nobleman who met Chan Er.

Episode 6

Bi Zhi and Beilu went back to Tianguang Market to trade again with Miao Tong. Bi Zhi couldn’t bring the Wu Blade yet, since the Kun Blade was still missing. He wanted another help from Miao Tong. He brought earrings, while Beilu brought four boba teas for Bi Zhi, Miao Tong, Chu Qiu, and himself. Specifically happy with the boba tea, Miao Tong gave Bi Zhi another book of spacetime coordinates for the next antiquity: Renyu or Mermaid Candle. Bi Zhi went back in time during famine and war and saw a little girl named Chan Er. She found a mysterious blue candle and lit it to keep her warm. The candlelight flickered and transformed into a beautiful woman, and told the little girl that she was the Mermaid of Dongting. Chan Er called her A Nuan. A Nuan said that Chan Er freed her by lighting the candle. She would always be with Chan Er, as long as the magic candle is lit. In the years ahead, A Nuan accompanied Chan Er and gave her what she needed: food, clothing, and most importantly, companionship, until Chan Er grew up.

Right at this time, when Chan Er was an adult, Bi Zhi and Beilu arrived looking for Chan Er. She became a pretty girl, but worked humbly as a laundress and sold handmade scented sachets. She was bullied by guys, so A Nuan taught her self-defense. Not only that, A Nuan suspiciously killed Chan Er’s bully. Around this time, too, Chan Er also met a young nobleman named Jiang Ling. Later, the man invited her to a poetry gathering event at his home.

Episode 7

A Nuan dressed Chan Er up with pretty clothes and jewelry, so she went to the event. Awww, my romantic heart thought that she and Jiang Ling would be a couple, but this guy turned out to be a brutal scumbag. Chan Er saw him torturing two people and jumped into the water. Jiang Ling found the invitation in the form of a sachet, so he knew Chan Er was a witness. The next day, he threatened Chan Er. When Chan Er told A Nuan, A Nuan wanted to kill the bully. A Nuan then confessed that she stole the food, clothing, jewelry, and killed the bully the last time. They argued, and suddenly the house was on fire. Jiang Ling and his men burnt Chan Er’s home. Trapped, A Nuan held Chan Er close, promising to stay with her until the end.

Bi Zhi and Beilu arrived just in time to pull Chan Er out. When she finally came to consciousness, she didn’t see A Nuan had gone and desperately called for her. Bi Zhi, however, revealed a shocking truth: A Nuan was never real! What???

A Nuan was Chan Er’s psychological defense mechanism and a manifestation of hope when she suffered. In fact, Chan Er herself was the one who stole the food, clothes, and jewelry. At least, she didn’t kill that bully. Chan Er finally accepted the reality, and the vision of A Nuan faded away. Bi Zhi and Beilu staged Chan Er’s death and provided a boat for her to escape from Jiang Ling and start a new life. Before leaving, she gave the Mermaid Candle to Bi Zhi.

While watching Chan Er leave on a boat, Bi Zhi’s mind drifted to the past. Not long after Qin Ziyi became a City Lord, a maid reported to Bi Zhi that his friend had been framed for the death of his younger brother and placed under house arrest.

Back in 2024, Bi Zhi seemed to be stalling his investigation into Beilu’s past. If the result was that Beilu was not Qin Ziyi, it would be too dangerous to keep involving Beilu in the mission. I think Bi Zhi started enjoying Beilu’s company; he didn’t want to lose Beilu as he had lost Ziyi.

Artifact #5: Liuqing Comb

Relationship Chart

Under Bi Zhi and Beilu are Gu siblings: Gu Huaijin (left) and Gu Bingyu (right). Between them is Pu Jingtang, Gu Huaijin’s teacher. Bottom: Governor Du Wenhua.

Episode 8

As heavy as Bi Zhi’s heart was, he started to check Beilu’s past with Ya She, and arrived in 2021. This was the year when Beilu graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2017, when Beilu was in high school. In 2007, when Beilu was in elementary school. However, his time-travel to 2005 revealed a shocking connection: Bi Zhi was the one who pulled little Beilu from a horrific car accident! Bi Zhi realized that he had altered Beilu’s fate many years ago! Their current meeting was somehow fated, although Bi Zhi didn’t know the connection yet.

After he went back from his time-travel, he found Beilu soaking wet in the rainy night. He was fired from his job because he exposed a client’s animal cruelty. Because of no money, he was evicted from his rental place, too. Bi Zhi offered him a place to stay and employment as his assistant. After giving out working instructions, Bi Zhi strictly forbade Beilu from entering a restricted room on the upper floor.

Their next mission was to investigate a woman named Gu Huaijin. This mission seemed more dangerous. They learned that the Gu family once ran a prestigious escort agency. One day they were ambushed, leaving only Gu Huaijin’s brother, Gu Bingyu, alive. Gu Huajin’s teacher, Pu Jingtang, was bitter at Gu Bingyu, believing Gu Bingyu’s ambition caused his sister’s death.

Episode 9

While watching Gu Bingyu, Bi Zhi and Beilu saw him being followed by someone. The man sensed it, too. He went into an inn and didn’t leave. There was only one exit. Beilu deduced that Bingyu didn’t escape through the window. Meanwhile, in the city, Pu Jingtang was shocked when he saw a woman who looked exactly like the late Gu Huaijin. When he went to find Gu Bingyu, the man said that it was only Jingtang’s delusion, since he was obsessed at Huaijin and couldn’t let her go.

Bi Zhi and Beilu investigated further and uncovered that Bingyu, in fact, was Huaijin in disguise. When they cornered Huaijin, she finally confessed. She explained her brother was the one who died to save her during the tragic escort mission years ago. Before dying, he gave her the Liuqing Comb, a mystical to change gender appearance. She had been using the comb to transform into his appearance to run the agency.

Huaijin agreed to hand the comb over to Bi Zhi once she had avenged her family. The villain was the former Governor of Cangzhou, Du Wenhua. She planned to take revenge during his grandson’s wedding. Bi Zhi and Beilu attended the wedding. Huaijin disguised herself as the bride, and during the final bow, she took Du Wenhua hostage.

Huaijin accused him of masterminding the massacre of the Gu family to cover up his embezzlement of disaster relief funds. The escort mission had been carrying evidence of his corruption. While surrounded by soldiers, Pu Jingtang suddenly stormed the hall to fight by her side. However, two people against many soldiers and martial artists was a suicide mission. Bi Zhi and Beilu intervened.

Bi Zhi took the groom as a hostage, so Huaijin and Jingtang could escape, but not before Huaijin killed Du Wenhua by slitting his throat. Beilu then threw an explosive at the crowd, so he and Bi Zhi could escape. Later, after paying respect to her late brother, Huaijin handed in the comb and rode away into the night. She was inspired to lead the escort as herself, after Beilu told her that in the future, women could achieve greatness without hiding their identities.

While trading the comb with Miao Tong, she reminded Bi Zhi that time travelers should avoid forming attachments to prevent the tragic cycles of history from repeating. We were back to the past, to October 2005, when Beilu was in the car with his parents. Their car was struck by a black SUV. The horrific accident claimed the lives of both his parents, leaving Beilu an orphan.

Conclusion

Wow, we were only on the 9th episode, and we got five artifacts out of 8 (or 9?) already? We still have 21 episodes more to go! I bet that the drama will definitely deal with Su Beilu’s past. Moreover, we haven’t seen the second Female Lead, Ye Liang Yin or A Ning, show up yet. So, I wonder if the drama actually has more to offer than just quests of retrieving the artifacts. I’m excited to see what would happen besides the artifact quests! Let’s continue to the second part: The Company: Recap Episodes 10 to 20.
