Introduction

The title was the first thing that attracted me to watch it, and I was sure it would appeal to you, too. This Chinese short drama employs popular tropes such as contract relationships and rich-poor dynamics, but with some unique aspects. Money Honey Brainy is an easy watch and promises chaotic and comedic romance. Great for quick entertainment.

Regarding the title, I will reveal it in the Spoiler section at the end of the article.

Main Characters

As much as I checked online, I couldn’t find any individual character posters. Not sure if the production company had a tight budget for this drama, but I was sure they allocated the limited budget wisely to the costumes, props, and sets. Since the setting is a workplace and a rich residence, the costumes, props, and sets of the professionals and the high-so fit with their backgrounds, professions, and wealth.

So, here’s my screenshot of the main characters, and their descriptions will be in the Review Section:

Amy Sun/Sun Yi Ning (孙艺宁) as Xin Tong

Cheng Yu Feng (程宇峰) as Wen Pei An

My Rating

My rating for this drama was based on MyDramaList’s scoring system, which is from 0.0 to 10.0. For any drama/movie/show I completed, I gave a minimum rating of 6.0 to appreciate the hard work of the production team, and to adjust to MyDramaList’s overall score base. From 6.0, this drama has additional scores of:

+0.5 for the unique theme of F.I.R.E (I will explain in the Review section)

+0.5 for the humor, not cringey or over-the-top

+1.0 for the acting of the leading actress and funny supporting actors/actresses

+0.5 for the high-so and professional costume

My final rating is 8.5/10.

Review

What I liked about this drama

The F.I.R.E Theme

Yes, we got the rich man, poor woman dynamic, but Xin Tong was not necessarily poor enough that she worked part-time jobs here and there. Xin Tong was an independent and financially savvy girl, who adopted the F.I.R.E. lifestyle. Financial Independence, Retire Early (F.I.R.E.) is a lifestyle movement focused on extreme saving, frugal living, and aggressive investing to gain enough wealth to retire decades earlier than the traditional age, allowing for freedom from traditional work by age 30s-50s, often by saving 50%+ of income and relying on investments for passive income.

Xin Tong planned to retire when she reached the age of 36. After that, she wanted to enjoy life, seeing the world. She worked full-time in the Marketing Department at Four Season Group (in which Wen Pei An was the new CEO, thanks to his Chairman Dad). However, she also took part-time gigs here and there, from laborious jobs like housecleaning to high-so stand-in. The last type of job that landed her in love and trouble with the Male Lead, as she had to screw up the blind date for her rich client and bestie, Qian Kexin.

To execute her Grand Retirement-at-Thirty-Six Plan, besides part-time jobs, she also lived frugally. Instead of owning a car, she had a bicycle. Instead of taking a taxi or ride-share, she took a tricycle/rickshaw. And she would rather have home-cooked hotpot than dine out at a restaurant.

I think youngsters need to learn about F.I.R.E. because it teaches crucial money management, reduces financial stress, and provides a path to freedom from traditional work, with principles like saving aggressively, investing early, and mindful spending giving them control over their future. The F.I.R.E. movement empowers them to escape debt and build significant assets while young, leveraging time for investments to grow, a vital life skill missing in standard education.

The leading actress Amy Sun

The first time I saw Amy Sun, as the leading character, was in the 2018 Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下). Although she mostly played supporting characters in mainstream dramas, she brings a delightful energy to her roles, often stealing scenes with her comedic timing and ability to portray strong female friendships and loyal companions.

Although her co-star Cheng Yu Feng had also played in many dramas as the male leads or the supporting characters, I think Amy carried out this drama with her innovative and energetic character Xing Tong. They had a strong and natural chemistry, effectively conveying the characters’ developing romance from a fake-dating arrangement to a genuine emotional connection.

Comedy in every aspect

The dialogue is a primary source of comedy in this drama, with hilarious but not over-the-top character interactions. For example, the non-spoiler dialogue between two male coworkers in the elevator about “Gold Digger Training Course”:

The scene-stealers

Despite being short dramas, several supporting characters are regarded as scene-stealers. Their presence, dialogues, and scenes shift the energy off the cliché with fresh perspectives and comic relief that keep the viewers engaged. For example:

  • Pei An’s father
  • The double agent assistant
  • The secondary couple
  • The love agents

The love agents were sent by Pei An’s father to spy on his son’s dates, hahaha. They parodied voice actors in dramas when they had to fill in Xin Tong and Pei An’s dialogues since the audio feature was broken. Hilariously, the dubbed dialogues are different from the real dialogues!

The second couple

I wished that this drama were longer, with a few more episodes with added scenes of the second couple, Qi Xing (played by Zhou Yi) and Ou Lu (played by Shao Hong Fei). Their romance plot itself was interesting. They met when they were in high school, they had been in a relationship for 8 years, and they had a long-distance relationship. More info about them, I consider it spoilery.

The ending-credit scenes

In some episodes, there are funny ending scenes as well as clips of the vertical drama that Pei An’s father (played by Shi Qiang) was watching. Coincidentally, his favorite drama was about a fake marriage!

“Can’t you see I’m busy… watching drama?”

My Critics

The childhood connection

Yup, there is that cliché that seems to be everywhere in romantic dramas, including this drama. It doesn’t serve any purpose to lead the couple to be together, because their feelings grow when they don’t even know they met when they were little.

Xin Tong’s father

Suddenly, a few episodes toward the end, the plot introduces Xin Tong’s biological father. The director/screenwriter seemed want to make the comedic plot serious, but his sudden appearance doesn’t seem to add any value to the story, in my opinion.

Conclusion

In my opinion, Money Honey Brainy is a cute, light-hearted drama, and is highly rewatchable because it offers comfort and a positive escape from the stresses of daily life. The Female Lead, Xin Tong, sends a message that ambition and self-reliance to be independent financially are valuable traits. With the F.I.R.E. lifestyle like she did, we will get ultimate freedom, control, and reduced stress, enabling them to escape the traditional work grind for more time with family, hobbies, travel, or People pursue Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) for ultimate freedom, control, and reduced stress, enabling them to escape the traditional work grind for more time with self, family, hobby, travel, or pursuing dreams.

Spoiler of the title, also the ending

Why “The Last Gig”?

While the usual romcom will end with a happy ending, interestingly, the ending of this drama is open towards positive ending. Pei An proposed to Xin Tong, and she looked at him. The drama ended. Her last gig was becoming Pei An’s fake girlfriend. Whether she would become his wife or the acting president of the Four Season Group, she would not do any other part-time jobs because she would have financial security, as it was her mission. Moreover, as an acting president, she probably wouldn’t retire by age 36, lol!
