Introduction

While waiting for this drama to finish airing to find out if I could accept the ending or not, I read comments and reviews about the messy editing/screenwriting. Now I’m writing this recap series to guide you through the so-called messiness.

Let’s go through the treacherous jianghu in this drama together!

PS: That “ten years” in the excerpt consists of what happened ten years ago, which is crucial to the plot.

Recap Episodes 1 to 5

Episode 1

The feud between the evil and the righteous started two hundred years ago. The ancestor of Beichen, sacrificed himself to kill a demon. His disciples founded the Six Sects of Beichen Sects to maintain order. Fifteen years ago, Cai Pingshu from Luoying Valley, one of the sects, sacrificed herself to kill Nie Hengcheng, the leader of the demonic Li sect. Cai Pingshu is Cai Zhao’s aunt, our Female Lead.

Wan Peng as Cai Pingshu

When Cai Pingshu died, her final wish to Cai Zhao’s parents was for them to send Cai Zhao to the Qingque Sect to study martial arts for one year, under the tutelage of Master Qi, leader of the Qingque Sect.

On the way to the Qingque Sect, the Cai family witnessed a horrible massacre of the Chang Clan. Their only survivor, the leader’s son Chang Ning, was heavily injured. Master Qi brought the young man back to the Qingque Sect to be treated.

When Cai Zhao arrived at the Qingque Sect one month later, she met Chang Ning again. At this time, he was bullied by Master Qi’s arrogant daughter, Lingbo. Cai Zhao managed to talk to Lingbo to get Chang Ning out of trouble. The Chang family and the Cai family had been friends, so naturally, Cai Zhao had known Chang Ning since little. However, she felt this “Chang Ning” was not like the Chang Ning she once knew.

At night, she met Chang Ning with an excuse to check his injury from bullying. She tested Chang Ning’s identity, but Chang Ning seemed to have already figured out her intention. While talking, suddenly a mysterious man blew smoke into the room, and both passed out.

Episode 2

The two were ambushed by men in black, captured, and taken to a cliff. Eventually, they were rescued by senior bro Song Yuzhi. Chang Ning and Cai Zhao were suspicious that this was an insider job. Master Qi then ordered a total lockdown.

The disciples went to visit Master Qi’s wife, Yin Sulian, and you could tell she lived in luxury in contrast to her husband. Chang Ning recognized an heirloom jewelry of his family. He further stated that his father once heard Yin Sulian had cursed Cai Pingshu. He even said that her daughter’s bullying was instigated by Yin Sulian. Before Yin Sulian beat the crap out of Chang Ning, Master Qi arrived to intervene and calmed his wife down. He reasoned that Chang Ning was just traumatized because of his family’s demise.

Cai Zhao was suspicious that Chang Ning deliberately provoked the issue of her aunt and Yin Sulian. Curious about his intention, she agreed of his request to move into her cottage for protection from the bullies. He knew that Master Qi gave Cai Zhao a special treatment because of her aunt.

Cai Zhao treated Chang Ning’s wounds under the guidance of Uncle Lei, the sect healer. Once Chang Ning’s bandages were removed, Cai Zhao was stunned to see how handsome Chang Ning was. But she quickly realized that his father didn’t look as refined as Chang Ning. He reasoned that she had never seen his mother.

Although Chang Ning was healed, he still wanted to cling to Cai Zhao for shelter and promised his father’s all hidden treasure as a payment. He even stirred Cai Zhao’s curiosity by hinting that the former leader of the Qingque Sect framed her aunt. With this temptation, they didn’t even care when rumors spread about Cai Zhao and Chang Ning living together.

Cai Zhao went to investigate the truth by herself at night to the sect library. To her surprise, the info book about the former leader was missing. Even more surprise, Chang Ning suddenly showed up. And then, the door into the secret room slammed shut behind them!

Episode 3

Luckily, it was not another assassin, but their senior brother Song Yuzhi. They managed to escape from him, although he found some traces of powder. Suspecting that Chang Ning intentionally led her to look for the info, Cai Zhao questioned him. Chang Ning revealed that the book contained a secret forbidden technique called Disintegration, which Cai Pingshu used to kill Nie Hengcheng. But it came with a hefty price that led to her painful death.

To confirm Chang Ning’s info, Cai Zhao asked Uncle Lei about the forbidden technique, but Uncle Lei feigned ignorance. Chang Ning was also in trouble, since Song Yuzhi questioned him about the powder, which was a calming powder for his manic symptoms. Cai Zhao stepped in, telling Song Yuzhi that it was she who accidentally spilled the powder, given by Uncle Lei, while looking for a late-night snack recipe at the library.

Chang Ning said he wanted to practice the technique so he could avenge his family. He had looked for it everywhere, but there was still the palace where Yin Sulian lived, surrounded by a canal, and it was heavily guarded. Master Qi’s wife was the daughter of the former leader, so it made sense if the book was at her palace. They hatched a plan to distract the guards. Their chance came during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Cai Zhao persuaded a junior brother to buy certain paper to make lanterns. The chemicals on the paper attracted poisonous bees. While the situation was in chaos, Chang Ning pretended he was stung by the bees and went berserk, wanting to kill Lingbo. Cai Zhao pretended to subdue Chang Ning, but Yin Sulian grew suspicious of Cai Zhao and searched her. However, Cai Zhao recruited her bestie, Yang Xiaolan, to steal the book. After obtaining the book, it was revealed that the former leader forced Cai Zhao’s aunt to practice the dark arts to save the six clans!

When Master Qi knew that Cai Zhao and Chang Ning had found the book, he destroyed it, but not before Chang Ning had memorized the technique. Cai Zhao begged him not to use the technique to avenge his family, since she recalled the agonizing moments her aunt had been through for 13 years after using the technique and killing the villain, to her death at age 30! She swore she would protect him. When Chang Ning made a bowl of wonton that tasted exactly as her aunt used to make, Cai Zhao was very touched and would like to take him back to Luoying Valley when she finished training and suggested that he open a wonton shop there!

That plan didn’t go through, since suddenly two visitors came to the Qingque Sect. One claimed he was a steward of the Chang clan and brought a young man named Jiang Ning, whom he claimed was Chang Ning!

Episode 4

Well, there was no DNA testing system back then, so the identity proof was difficult to obtain, especially since both Nings could answer the challenging questions about the Chang family. The gruesome test performed by the sect leaders was unsuccessful and caused both Nings to pass out.

At night, Hanhan, Cai Zhao’s little bro who tagged along with his sister, went to the kitchen for a late-night snack and overheard some frightening news from the guards. They said that if by tomorrow, the leaders couldn’t find out who the real Chang Ning was, both Nings would be crippled and deemed as spies. Cai Zhao went to find Chang Ning, but the latter had run away using a giant eagle he summoned. Cai Zhao tried to prevent Chang Ning from escaping, but Chang Ning pulled her up.

When the sect leaders found out that Chang Ning had escaped, someone shot the poor eagle. How mean! In pain, the eagle dropped Chang Ning and Cai Zhao on the grounds of Taichu Temple, located next to Chang Fort. When they were brought to Master Qiu of the temple, Chang Ning smelled the same fragrance on Master Qiu’s robe and accused him of killing his father. He had smelled the same fragrance on his father’s robe when he died that night. Master Qiu denied it. Everyone returned to the Qingque Sect for judgment.

At the same time, Cai Zhao’s parents also went to the Qingque Sect after investigating the massacre. They found out that the culprit was not Master Qiu but the Demonic Camp that was targeting the six clans. Moreover, Jiang Nan also came forward, confessing that he was actually an illegitimate son of Master Chang. Well, that issue was settled. Master Qi let both Nings stay at the Qingque Sect.

However, Cai Zhao knew that “Chang Ning” was not Chang Ning. He claimed that the eagle was his family’s pet, but she knew Uncle Chang was too poor to raise an eagle! However, since Uncle Chang died to protect Chang Ning, and even Jiang Ning protected him too, she let it go, as long as Chang Ning didn’t do any harm to the sect.

Liu Runming (popular in Chinese micro dramas) as Zhou Yuqi

Well, Cai Zhao apparently was betrothed by his parents to Zhou Yuqi from Peiqiong Manor. She didn’t mind marrying Yuqi either, because she had known him. He was a kind man, and the Manor was a lively place. Yuqi went to visit his fiancée with lavish gifts, including for Chang Ning. But Chang Ning was sooo jealous, he rejected the gift rudely. When Cai Zhao confronted Chang Ning for his temper tantrum, Chang Ning told her to break the engagement, lol!

The Qingque Sect was having a memorial event to celebrate the founding of the Beichen Sects. The atmosphere was festive, but it soon turned into a terror with a showdown between the elders because of what had happened in the past!

Episode 5

The duel between the mysterious woman and Master Qiu from Taichu Temple ended with both dead. Chang Ning was too late to question Master Qiu, as he was still suspicious of him, despite the investigation result that the Demonic Camp was the culprit of the massacre. He suspected that there was a mastermind behind Master Qiu.

After the horrific suicide duel, the situation at the sect turned out gloomy, and many students left. Cai Zhao was advised by her future father-in-law to leave the sect and marry his son. But she adamantly stayed with the excuse to fulfill her aunt’s wish. Actually, now she was super curious to investigate what actually happened in the past and with her aunt. Master Qi also suddenly became suspicious of Chang Ning, who could recognize the suicide bomb used by that woman. Cai Zhao urged Chang Ning to leave, now that master suspected his identity.

Just before Chang Ning left, the Qingque Sect was suddenly ambushed by the Demonic Camp. Some of their spies infiltrated the Qingque Sect as students. Chang Ning didn’t leave, but ended up fighting the enemy together with Cai Zhao. Their senior brother Song Yuzhi was poisoned, and another senior brother, Fan Xingjia, was kidnapped. Cai Zhao suspected that their senior brother might be held in Qingque Town. After searching a hundred houses, they narrowed down to one house to rescue Fan Xingjia. Inside, they found that a scholar was forced to do a face transformation technique!

TL;DR

  • Cai Zhao was sent to study martial arts at the Qingque Sect and met Chang Ning, who was the sole survivor of his family’s massacre. However, Cai Zhao suspected this “Chang Ning” was not the real Chang Ning.
  • A lot of stuff happened at the Qingque Sect presently, which slowly revealed what had happened in the past. And it ain’t pretty!

True that I was curious about the past, but I was more curious about what happened to the real Chang Ning and why Master Chang took this impostor in. Are you with me? Let’s see if my questions will be answered in the second part!
