Highlight Episodes 9 to 18

Episode 9: Flame

The house in Gao Feng’s dream, which was connected to the past, was found. However…

The villains burned down the house with Aunt He inside. She had died in Episode 8, committing suicide after falling ill. The villains found the house and lured Gao Feng to go there. Luckily, he informed the detective first. By the time Gao Feng arrived, the villain had thrown a Molotov cocktail into the house. He desperately tried to pull Aunt He’s body out along with the evidence, and Long Yu helped him out. A villain posed as a fake firefighter to take the evidence. Finally, the detective and fire brigade showed up, but Long Yu passed out in a coma.

I think Long Yu was an admirable ex-girlfriend. She helped Gao Feng with his quests and was also connected with his adoptive parents. I wonder if they would get back together in the future.

Episode 10: Contest

Who is Aunt He?

The dead, burned body in that house was identified as He Xiaohong from her cards. However, the real He Xiaohong was at Mingyue Care Center. All residents there were females, and all were former singers/dancers from Penglai International Club. The owner had been Xu Peng, and now was under his son, Xu Zhiyang, Feifei’s husband. However, Xu Zhiyang didn’t know anything about it. All residents have mental issues, and they were under psychiatric care. The police suspected that the care center indirectly controlled the residents; they didn’t want to say anything when asked by the police.

This He Xiaohong tried to commit suicide by sleeping pill overdose, but was rescued and taken to the hospital.

Gao Feng managed to enter the villa dedicated to Feifei’s mother with Feifei’s permission, and saw an oil painting of Li Hongyue.

Gao Feng identified Li Hongyue after seeing the necklace her necklace.

She was ‘Aunt He’. Apparently, Li Hongyue didn’t die from postpartum depression, as stated by Feifei’s father. Somehow, she took He Xiaohong’s identity.

Back to 1990s, Qu Meng did not act normally after the death of Yang Wenyuan. Her boss, Li Hongyue, found out that Qu Meng was pregnant. Hongyue suggested Qu Meng abort the baby, but Qu Meng refused.

Later, Li Hongyue also became pregnant. She made an excuse to rest in the countryside until her baby was born, and asked Qu Meng to come with her to take care of her. In reality, Hongyue wanted to help Qu Meng covering up her pregnancy, so she could deliver her baby secretly.

The sismance between Hongyue and Qu Meng was gold!

Episode 11: Golden Ball

Gao Feng told Feifei the fact about her mother, which made Feifei furious at her father.

Wu Guhao realized that Gao Feng was obsessed with finding the truth about his mother, thus endangering him and his daughter. Offering Gao Feng money and other perks didn’t work for Gao Feng, so Wu Guhao threatened Gao Feng, not with his own life (since Gao Feng didn’t care), but the lives of Gao Feng’s friends and family.

Who did Wu Guhao threaten Gao Feng with?

Long Yu, who was in a coma at the hospital. Wu Guhao bribed her parents to take Long Yu away. Fortunately, Long Yu and Gao Feng had made a legal arrangement that they were both each other’s guardians.

While Wu Guhao was confronting Gao Feng, Feifei secretly sneaked into the villa built by her father for Li Hongyue to find some clues.

Episode 12: Choose

Wu Guhao told his daughter that back then, he was forced by another person to do dirty business in Penghai. Who was that person?

Xu Peng, Xu Zhiyang’s late father.

With his father’s statement, Feifei was back defending her father from Gao Feng.

We were back in the 1990s. Now we found out how Gao Dahua became Gao Feng’s adopted father.

A driver from Penghai International Club, blackmailed Li Hongyue and Qu Meng, upon finding out that Qu Meng was pregnant and suspected the father was Yang Wenyuan. Since Li Hongyue didn’t have much money, a fight ensued between the driver and Li Hongyue. Gao Dahua, who was the Club’s cook, helped the women, and Qu Meng killed the driver. Gao Dahua helped them dispose of the body, but he didn’t want the money they offered, since he felt bad for them. Li Hongyue had known that Gao Dahua and his wife were childless, so she offered Gao Dahua Qu Meng’s baby to raise.

Xu Zhiyang was released from the detention center. Upon knowing what his father had done, he decided to turn in the evidence about his father to the police.

Episode 13: Exhibit

After being informed of the crimes of his father, Zhiyang knelt in front of Gao Feng, and begged him to show mercy to his new family. Gao Feng simply reminded Zhiyang that if he really want to do it for the sake of his future child, he should find out the truth and not waver.

Gao Feng and Feifei both experienced hard times with the revelation of Li Hongyue.

Gao Feng and his adoptive mother were being harassed.

The police asked Feifei to identify the body of Aunt He as her mother Li Hongyue, but she didn’t acknowledge the person. Later, she cried in the bathroom and smashed her mother’s belonging.

Episode 14: Devil

>>> MAJOR SPOILERS <<<

What happened to Qu Meng?

Qu Meng wanted to report to the police the Club’s illegal activities, and she had all the evidence. After saying goodbye to her little son, she left by bus. However, Wu Guhao and his men stopped the bus and took her.

What happened to Xu Peng?

Xu Peng didn’t want to do what Wu Guhao told him to do. Wu Guhao threatened him that his family would be at risk. Later, his wife was killed by Wu Guhao. In order to save his son, Zhiyang, Xu Peng signed a declaration stating that he was the culprit of all illegal activities. Xu Peng was forced to strangle Qu Meng with his belt buckle, and buried her inside the lion statue. Wu Guhao left Xu Peng’s belt buckle with the body, so if her body was found, the blame would be on Xu Peng. Xu Peng then committed suicide.

What happened to Li Hongyue?

After finding out that his wife helped Qu Meng and didn’t want to side with him, Wu Guhao beat her up until her face was unrecognizable. After that, Wu Guhao placed her under house arrest for a long time and didn’t let Feifei to see her. Hongyue repeatedly told her daughter that if she missed her mother, she should go to the square to see the stone lion. In despair, Hongyue tried to kill herself by jumping into the river.

Episode 15: Mask

Xu Zhiyang was in great danger!

Xu Peng wrote his final letter to his son, which was stored in a bank’s safe deposit, stating that Wu Guhao was the mastermind behind everything. Penglai International Club became a drug trafficker as well as a sex service chain. Xu Zhiyang begged his father-in-law to turn himself in, but he was held up instead. Feifei was worried about her husband, so she asked Gao Feng to help. However, Wu Guhao already knew that Zhiyang and Gao Feng worked together. The police brought Wu Guohao in for questioning, but Wu Guohao had already made up an excuse to deal with it.

Episode 16: The Truth

What happened to Xu Zhiyang in this episode?

Xu Zhiyang tried to escape, and Gao Feng wanted to pick him up, but Zhiyang was hit by a van, and now he was in a coma at the hospital. Not sure if this was Wu Guhao’s plan or not, since the van driver was intoxicated. Feifei blamed Gao Feng. Wu Guhao’s man successfully got Xu Peng’s final letter to his son, and Wu Guhao burned the letter.

Who was the person Gao Dahua contacted in his last days?

After surviving, Li Hongyue returned to Binchuan for revenge. She wanted to report Wu Guhao to the police, but Gao Dahua was too scared to be a witness. To make her give up her revenge, Gao Dahua took her to see the wedding between her daughter and Xu Zhiyang. However, Hongyue insisted to go to the police. Gao Dahua managed to calm her anger and she made a bigger plan.

What happened to the one before the person crashed the car into the statue?

Remember Wang Dan? Hongyue managed to find Wang Dan at the hospital, and she told everything to Wang Dan. Wang Dan was pretty much pushed to a dead end by Wu Guhao. After listening to Hongyue’s story, Wang Dan decided to voluntarily drive a car in front of the statue in Penglai Square to reveal Qu Meng’s bones in the statue, so the police would open the murder case.

Episode 17: Reunion

>>> MAJOR SPOILERS <<<

Gao Dahua’s last lies

When Li Hongyue came back to Binchuan, she wanted to meet Gao Feng. During a phone conversation at the cake shop, Gao Dahua lied to Li Hongyue, claiming he had brought his adopted son. In fact, we knew that Gao Feng had gone mountaineering because of their disharmonious relationship with his adoptive father. Gao Dahua called the detective, who was his godson, claiming that a female scammer had called him (Li Hongyue) and asked him to investigate. When the crash happened, Gao Dahua knew Li Hongyue’s plan to expose everything. Out of fear and guilt, he killed himself. In fact, he was the one who buried Qu Meng’s body inside the lion statue!

More secrets of the golden ball and the lion statue

The golden ball pendant on Li Hongyue’s necklace was successfully snatched by Gao Feng last time, and he gave it to the police. Inside, the police found a string of numbers. They are the longitude and the latitude of the lion statue location. Realizing that Li Hongyue and Qu Meng shouldn’t have known about those numbers last time, the police thought there must be more secrets buried inside the statue.

After more digging, the police found two female skeletons, two skeletons of induced abortion babies, and two male skeletons. The time of death of these skeletons was earlier than that of Qu Meng’s. Not only that, but the police also found a tooth that did not belong to any of the victims.

The second most shocking revelation.

The police conducted a DNA test to establish a familial connection between Li Hongyue and Feifei. The results came out, and Feifei had NO blood relationship with Li Hongyue. However, the comparison with Gao Feng’s DNA results was very close. After further testing, the police confirmed that Feifei and Gao Feng were dizygotic twins born to Qu Meng!

Back then, Li Hongyue had a miscarriage when she fought Penglai’s driver who wanted to kill her and Qu Meng. Qu Meng gave birth to twins, one boy and one girl. The baby girl was given to Li Hongyue to raise, while the baby boy was given to Gao Dahua to raise.

This truth was too shocking, and Gao Feng and Feifei needed time to accept it.

After the police’s discovery under the lion statue, the police went looking for Wu Guhao to arrest him. However, he had run away from his mansion to the countryside, burning all the evidence.

At the end of the episode, Wu Guhao called Gao Feng. What did he want to do?

Wu Guhao wanted to meet him and Feifei to tell him how Yang Wengyuan died. Wu Guhao threatened Gao Feng with his loyal driver, who sneaked into Gao Feng’s vehicle a bomb tied up on his chest. Gao Feng couldn’t do anything but comply with Wu Guhao’s demand.

Episode 18: Retribution

>>> MAJOR SPOILERS <<<

What happened to the meeting at the cruise ship?

At first, Gao Feng wanted to go by himself, but Feifei begged to go with him, as she, too, wanted to know what happened to Yang Wengyuan. The police were informed, and they were ready to capture Wu Guhao. Gao Feng and Feifei went to meet Wu Guhao at the cruise ship that belonged to the Penglai International Group.

Wu Guhao set up several chairs and imagined the people who had died were sitting there. He then lit a birthday cake, and told Gao Feng and Feifei he would leave Binchuan. When Gao Feng reminded Wu Guhao that he wouldn’t go anywhere, Wu Guhao said there was a bomb on the cruise ship. He then told Gao Feng and Feifei what happened to Yang Wengyuan before he died.

The most shocking revelation of all!!!

Back in the 1990s. After Qu Meng was captured by Wu Guhao’s men. She was taken to the place where Yang Wengyuan was also held. Qu Meng was drugged, and Wu Guhao raped her in front of Yang Wengyuan. Yang Wengyuan was so angry, broke free and fought Wu Guhao. Wu Guhao broke his tooth and stuffed it into Yang Wengyuan’s mouth. That was the male skeleton and the tooth found by the police under the lion statue. Before that, Wu Guhao had raped and impregnated two women (the female skeletons and unborn babies), and buried them in a location where the lion statue was built.

Qu Meng later became pregnant, unaware that Wu Guhao raped her and thought she was pregnant from her night sleeping with Yang Wengyuan, whom she loved. Later, Wu Guhao did a DNA test on Feifei and found out she was his child from raping Qu Meng. He also found out that Gao Feng was also his and Feifei’s twin brother.

The ending of Wu Guhao

After threatening with the bomb, the police evacuated the cruise passengers; they were ready to capture Wu Guhao, alive or dead. Wu Guhao took Feifei hostage and tried to kill Gao Feng, but he was shot dead by the sniper.

The detective deduced that Wu Guhao intended to die, not to leave Binchuan. He didn’t dare to face the judgment of the law and his own blood kin.

What happened to the people who were hospitalized?

Long Yu, Gao Feng’s ex-girlfriend, was in a coma after the fire, woke up a while ago.

Gao Feng’s adopted mother, who had a heart attack after finding out her husband’s crimes, was rescued at the right time. She apologized to Gao Feng on behalf of her husband, but Gao Feng always regarded her as his mother.

Xu Zhiyang also woke up from a coma.

The women from the Mingyue Care Center, who were unlawfully detained by the Penglai Group, were released.

The ending of Gao Feng

Gao Feng no longer intended to leave Binchuan as he had before. He stayed and got back together with Long Yu. Li Churan, the woman who used to work at the cake shop and helped Aunt He give a cake to Gao Feng before, now worked at Long Yu’s bar.

The ending of Wu Feifei

As Xu Zhiyang woke up from a coma, they would be together with their baby, after they served the punishment for their crimes.

The ending of the mothers

Gao Feng and Feifei buried Qu Meng and Li Hongyue side by side in a private site with oceanview.

Zhang Jing, Gao Feng’s adopted mother, finally took a tour to see the world, and Gao Feng personally sent her off.

This was the last message from Qu Meng to her children:

In this lifetime, I’ve met many people and sung many songs. There are many people in this world like your mother, who once lived on the edge of chaos. Stumbling through right and wrong, good and evil, all their lives. We are all ordinary beyond measure. We’ve been lost. We’ve been weak. We’ve been afraid. But the ones I love taught me with their lives not to be afraid. Take one step forward with courage, and the darkness will retreat one step. Light travels through a thousand years, and every nightmare will awaken. Children, don’t be afraid. I can already see you flying freely, riding the wind. The smiles on your faces are enough to light up the stars. Blooming in the future.

Conclusion

These are my takeaways from the protagonists Gao Feng and Wu Feifei, from their life journey uncovering a 20-year-old case full of long-buried secrets, that eventually come to light and justice is served.

From Gao Feng: The importance of recognizing “unspoken” love. Gao Feng eventually reconciles with his obsession with blood relatives by realizing the selfless love his adoptive parents provided for years.

From Wu Feifei: A reflection on the “quiet courage” needed to face life, suggesting that while the world can be cruel, individuals can emerge from life’s impasses by facing the truth.

From both Gao Feng and Wu Feifei: Despite their different backgrounds, they move from confrontation to cooperation. Light of Dawn (人之初) suggests that collective effort and community support are essential for overcoming systemic darkness.
