Introduction

This is my first time recapping a drama since it started airing. Before, I started recapping when there was any indication that the drama would end satisfactorily, especially for the main couple, if it’s a romance. As I started Love Beyond the Grave, the high production value with a gothic vibe was definitely a draw for me, a fan of dark, supernatural, and high-stakes dramas. So, if you’re like me, let’s start this angsty journey together. If you would rather wait for the ending, please bookmark these recap articles to enjoy later!

I will update this part when there are English translations of OST titles and/or relationship chart, or additional character descriptions.

Recap Episodes 1 to 6

Episode 1

Legend has it that at the end of the East Sea stands the giant Fusang Tree. Beneath it lies the Void Spirit World. Unresolved mortal obsession gathers here. After centuries of cultivation, they became spirits. The one with the highest spirit power becomes the Sovereign of Spirits, ruling all spirits.

He Simu, is the current Sovereign Spirits. She’s color-blind, numb to flavors, cold, warmth, and lacks five senses. She loves roaming the mortal world, in this case, Liangzhou. There was a centuries-old prophecy from a Starhaven sorcerer that said that the master of the Deliverance Sword may be the spell bearer who brings her five senses.

While walking through the war-torn place, an injured man begged her to save his son named Xue Chenying. She found the boy. Soon, Duan Xu, the Commander of Tabai Army of the Great Liang arrived. He Simu recognized his sword, which was the Deliverance Spirit Sword. It was her aunt’s from 300 years ago. Curious, she took her mortal body, named He Xiaoxiao, to approach Duan Xu. From now on, I will switch the Female Lead’s name interchangeably: He Simu or He Xiaoxiao. He asked her to wipe off the blood on her hand. The mortal body was very weak. Xiaoxiao fainted, but not before she asked Duan Xu to save Chenying. Duan Xu asked the soldiers to take care of Xiaoxiao and Chenying.

Simu called her advisor, Hejia Feng Yi, who called her Great Ancestor. She asked him to investigate Duan Xu’s background. Meng Wan, Duan Xu’s subordinate, suspected that Xiaoxiao and Chenying were either spies for Chong State or for Duke Pei. She tricked them with buns from Chong State. Chenying vomited. Although the “siblings” were not from Chong State, Meng Wan kicked them out anyway. Simu then accompanied the boy to bury his father.

Duan Xu went undercover to assess the war aftermath. Simu saw him again, so she and Chenying chased him and told him that they were homeless. Duan Xu took them back in. At that moment, someone tried to assassinate Duan Xu. Simu observed that the Deliverance Sword recognized its master.

Feng Yi was back with his investigation. Duan Xu, who came from scholar family and had imperial relatives, was impeached by his rival, Fang Xianye who was now the Censorial Counselor. Duan Xu was sent to the border as a general. Simu concluded that Duan Xu would die soon because he had enemies, so she could take back the Deliverance Sword.

While watching for Duan Xu fighting for the assassins and waiting for him to die, Simu was sitting on her Spirit Lantern to warm Xiaoxiao’s body. However, seeing the Deliverance Sword, the Lantern became shaky and dropped Simu from her hiding place, to be seen by Duan Xu!

Episode 2

Meanwhile, Chenying was woken up by a terrifying spirit who chased him on the street. He sought refuge in Meng Wan, who was patrolling the street with the soldiers. Of course, humans were not a match for a spirit. Luckily, Simu came in time to scare the spirit away. Later, Simu went to Shanling Temple to deal with the spirit that chased Chenying.

Duan Xu noticed that last time Xiaoxiao was right in predicting the weather (Simu actually conjured the snow), so he wanted Xiaoxiao to predict the weather for the army. He took her to the city tower and asked her about the color of the clouds. However, Duan Xu actually wanted to test Xiaoxiao. Earlier, he asked his subordinates to check her background, and nobody knew her. He tested her and found out she was color-blind and lacked sense of taste. He had observed her when she showed up at the first time. Later, Simu found out from Chenying that Duan Xu had tested her. He did indeed test her and found that although she was likely not a spy, she was indeed an interesting person. Simu also found from Feng Yi that Simu had lied about his origin.

Later, another general challenged Duan Xu a duel because Duan Xu had promoted his subordinate. Simu and Chenying sat on the rooftop and watched the duel. At first, Simu secretly helped Duan Xu against the fierce opponent, but soon realized that Duan Xu was not just a scholar-turned-general. From Duan Xu’ agility and awareness, Simu deduced that Duan Xu had killed many people in the past. On the other hand, Duan Xu seemed could see Xiaoxiao and Chenying who were invisible.

Episode 3

Feng Yi’s further investigation revealed that when he was 12, Duan Xu was a scholar prodigy with his famous essays. He returned home at age 19 and was ambushed by bandits. His servants were all dead. Soon, his grandmother, the only one who knew him, also died. Simu deduced that the current Duan Xu was not the Duan Xu from many years ago. A switch must have happened during the bandit attack.

The Tabai Army attacked Shuozhou, and Simu had even prepared and played an elegy song for Duan Xu, hoping that he would die and she could retrieve her sword. Surprisingly, Duan Xu called the legendary red birds using the Northern Chong dialect. Hundreds of red birds swarmed towards the enemy’s army and attacked them.

Episode 4

The little convoy that took Xiaoxiao and Chenying in the carriage and led by Captain Han Lingqiu was ambushed by the enemy. There were only a few dozen guarding the carriage; meanwhile, there were 200 North Chong soldiers. Simu finally intervened and sent blue fireballs to attack the enemy. They survived and continued their journey to Shuozhou.

Well, that was actually Duan Xu’s set up to test Captain Han Lingqiu, whom he suspected was a mole in the Tabai Army. He knew the enemy would attack. Nearby, Duan Xu’s subordinate Xia Qingsheng was standing by with his army, ready to help. Because of Simu’s intervention, Han Lingqiu’s intention was unclear.

Xiaoxiao’s body was weakened, and she fainted due to fever. When the physician checked on her, since she didn’t know the five senses, she only copied what the physician said. Later, Duan Xu brought her medicine, and he directly revealed that he knew of her lack of senses. They ended up confronting each other when Simu also revealed her deduction about Duan Xu’s identity. Simu made a wager with Duan Xu, and for that, she actually checked his body out for scars when he was in his undergarment.

Well, we found out about the creepy “red birds”. They were actually Duan Xu’s trick by painting pigeons with red pigment. When they were released, the birds frightened the North Chong’s army because of their superstition. Following the birds, the Tabai Army released fire arrows towards the panicked enemy. Hearing that, Simu was suspicious that Duan Xu was from North Chong because he knew the legend.

In this episode, the Second Male Lead, Fu Mingyu, finally showed up. He was the Right Hand of the Void, He Simu’s second-in-command. Mingyu was equally scary in executing punishments on rebellious spirits. But he was so sweet when visiting Simu and gave her a tea-whisking set. Hmmm… I think he liked her.

Duan Xu blew up the frozen Guanhe River as per Xiaoxiao’s suggestion. Simu went down to the battlefield invisibly to see the devastating situation with a lot of jellyfish, the departed souls. She approached Duan Xu. Suddenly, he called her name, and she wondered if he could sense her. When he walked past her, suddenly the Spirit Pearl inside Simu reacted. Her aunt had given her the Pearl, which would glow when one day she met her curse breaker: someone who would connect with her five senses. After 400 years of existing in a void, Simu realized that the person was here: Duan Xu!

Episode 5

Well, from now on, instead of wanting Duan Xu to die to get his sword, Simu wanted Duan Xu to live and would protect his life. She asked Fengyi to investigate Duan Xu’s life because she wanted to trade something valuable for his five senses.

Since then, Simu had been looking for what Duan Xu really wished in his life, which he would trade his five senses for. She had observed Duan Xu, including when he had a murderous intention towards a woman who burned down the granary. Knowing that the general would not kill the woman, Simu ran and unsheath his sword and stroke the woman!

Episode 6

Uh ok, the reason Simu killed the woman because she didn’t want the woman to develop an evil obsession. It became a way for evil spirits to come and plague the world. But of course, her killing the woman might look horrible for Duan Xu and the rest, so Xiaoxiao pretended that she had lost control emotionally and took action, because she hated North Chong so much. Duan Xu saved her by telling the crowd that she had contributed a lot to the Great Liang. She was just grief-stricken because her hometown was slaughtered. People cheered like she was a heroine. Later, Duan Xu warned Xiaoxiao not to use his sword without permission, and didn’t care when she reasoned that her killing was to prevent evil spirits’ invasion.

Feng Yi found the real Duan Xu, he was none other than Fang Xianye, the Censorial Counselor! Duan Chengzhang, the Minister of Rites, was Duan Xu’s father. Fang Xianye wanted to kill Duan Xu.

While intercepting the enemy’s supplies, Duan Xu and his soldiers were trapped by the North Chong army. Simu didn’t want Duan Xu to die, so she intervened in the situation and had to reveal herself as the Sovereign of Spirits. Simu sent hundreds of crows to shoo the North Chong army away. She told Duan Xu that she helped him because she wanted to make a deal with him. Duan Xu still didn’t want to reveal himself as an impostor and asked her to talk about their deal back in the camp.

While Simu was away and left Xiaoxiao’s body asleep, a spirit named Fang Chang sneaked in. He was the Vice Lord of Shanling Temple, who defended the female spirit that chased Chen Ying last time. Fang Chang fell for this spirit, but was forced to banish her. Since then, he held grudges and found out that Simu inhabited Xiaoxiao’s body. He would take advantage of this finding.

In the evening, Simu and Duan Xu sat down to talk about their deal. However, when he heard that she wanted to borrow one of his senses for ten day, in exchange of granting him one favor, he refused.

TL;DR

  • Simu was a Sovereign Spirit who was color-blind and didn’t have five senses.
  • In the mortal world, He Simu saw that her aunt’s Deliverance Sword was with Duan Xu. She got close to him as He Xiaoxiao, so she could retrieve the sword when he died in battle.
  • During her investigation, Simu suspected that Duan Xu was not what he appeared to be. Duan Xu was also well aware that Simu approached him intentionally. They confronted each other with their hidden identities.
  • The Soul Pearl inside Simu reacted upon passing Duan Xu in a battlefield. This was an indication that her curse breaker had appeared: Duan Xu!
  • Simu finally revealed her real identity and wanted to strike a deal with Duan Xu to exchange with his five senses.

That was a suggestive position by the end of Episode 6. Let’s continue to Part 2 to see how this deal talk ends up!
