Introduction

Having watched so many Chinese dramas, I knew that China restricts or dislikes transmigration plots because the government views them as treating serious history with frivolous, absurd, and monstrous plots, promoting feudalism, superstition, and fatalism. Therefore, I didn’t watch My Page in the 90s when it was airing, because I wanted to know how the drama ended.

This highlight articles series of two covers the main couple only. Because living into a 90’s novel to win a cold CEO’s heart is a challenging game for the Female Lead, I know this will be a slow-burning romance. Since it’s only 24 episodes, every scene with the main lead is seen as valuable, as they gradually fall in love. I also think that the secondary couple’s romance is irrelevant to the main plot.

In the ultimate battle of romantic tactics, who will out-scheme whom? To get home, influencer Lin Huan’er launches an operation to win over CEO Gao Haiming, only for her clever plans to hilariously backfire. Characters

Main Characters

Wang Yu Wen (王玉雯) as Lin Huan Er

Lin Huan’er is an emotional anchor in 2023. She accidentally traveled into an old-fashioned romance novel and engaged in a battle of schemes and counter-schemes with the Letao Group’s domineering CEO, Gao Haiming, from 1998.

To return to the real world, she has to win over Gao Haiming, but in the process, she gradually becomes emotionally entangled, facing a dilemma of whether to stay or leave.

Chen Xing Xu/Oliver Chen (陈星旭) as Gao Hai Ming

He is one of the shareholders of the department store, and under his name, he runs the Letao Group, intending to settle in the department store business.

He is a “white-collar villain” CEO who subverts traditional norms. On the surface, he is a well-dressed, icy CEO, but inside, he harbors a forward-thinking and clear-headed soul.

Supporting Characters

Hu Tie Han (Kido Ma) – Gao Hai Ming’s friend

Zhu Meng Meng (Zeng Meng Xue) – Huan’er friend

My Rating

My rating for this drama was based on MyDramaList’s scoring system, which is from 0.0 to 10.0. For any drama/movie/show I completed, I gave a minimum rating of 6.0 to appreciate the hard work of the production team, and to adjust to MyDramaList’s overall score base. From 6.0, this drama has additional scores of:

+0.5 for the hilarious and unique game system.

+0.5 for the ending (if you want to know how it ends, see Part 2 of this article series in Episode 24).

+0.5 for the characterization of Lin Huan’er and Gao Haiming.

+0.5 for the acting and chemistry, which makes sense since the leading actor and leading actress have been friends for 16 years.

+1.0 for the 90s /retro costume, props, makeup, and sets.

My criticisms are: Firstly, the business part is too much (but this is my personal pet peeve). Secondly, the subplot of the second couple is a filler in my opinion. Thirdly, the logic of the ending is illogical, no matter how I tried to make sense of it. Even if it’s only a story within a story, still, either the drama screenwriter or the novelist in the drama messed it up. I read that this drama was supposed to be 28 episodes. However, the production team had to cut 4 episodes that didn’t pass the NRTA censorship. The director revealed that the 4 episodes actually explained the ending, perhaps how Gao Haiming could show up in modern times? I also read that they changed directors three times. The budget seemed to become a problem (perhaps because of director changes?), because the drama only had 3 OST songs, which is not many for a standard-length C-drama. It also affected the lack of promotion for this drama.

Thus, my final rating is 9.0/10.

Couple Moments

Episode 1

While debating with another streamer about the classic romance novel, Bye, Wild Weasel, Lin Huan’er’s broadcast was cut off by the CEO Zeng of Keyu Streaming Company, where she worked. Mr. Zeng was in the middle of negotiation of a potential buyer of the company, which was none other than Gao Haiming. He was worried that Lin Huan’er offended Haiming, so he ordered the cut off. Huan’er angrily stormed into her boss’s office, not caring that he was in a business meeting. Haiming interrupted the argument between Huan’er and Mr. Zeng, and asked Huan’er to have another broadcast to answer his question: whether any man in the novel is worth loving or not.

On her second broadcast about the same novel, Huan’er introduced the hero’s favorite plane model, called the Wild Weasel fighter jet model. While talking, suddenly she felt the world spinning and lost consciousness. She woke up in 1999 inside an aircraft museum. Haiming was there, but he didn’t recognize her. Soon the pager in Huan’er pocket beeped. The same pager she talked down earlier during her broadcast. The pager stated that Huan’er was inside that classic romance novel she despised. After laying down the rules, the pager told her that she was the Female Lead Lin Huan’er, and her main mission was to make the Male Lead Gao Haiming fall for her so she could go home to real life.

It happened that her rich friend Zhu Mengmeng got an invitation to a department store grand opening, and Letao Group, the company in which Haiming was the GM, was one of the attendees. Huan’er went with Mengmeng to the party, but accidentally mistook another handsome man as Gao Haiming, and also mistook the real Haiming for an NPC. She paid Haiming 100 yuan to bump her with a tray in front of ‘Haiming’, so when she fell, the ML would catch her, as the usual “fateful encounter” trope. But Haiming bumped her with a cart instead. ‘Haiming’ avoided the cart, and Huan’er was caught by Haiming, as per trope. The funny thing was Haiming asked for an extra 200 yuan for his extra work. Huan’er finally found out that the man was not Gao Haiming, and he was even married!

At her bestie’s home, Mengmeng complained that she had to go to a blind date arranged by her parents. Huan’er offered to go in her place to ruin the meeting. Of course, the blind date partner was none other than Gao Haiming!

Episode 2

Huan’er tried her best to sabotage the date in front of Haiming, only to change her tactic when she found out he was her target: Gao Haiming. He explained that he met Zhu Mengmeng before, so he knew she was an impostor. The pager then beeped and showed his like toward her was -50%. Not a good start! She made a few attempts to increase his like rating, only to have it drop further to -100%, and she had to clean all toilets in the building as a punishment.

Since she failed the Love at First Sight quest, she had to establish a work connection with Haiming. She applied at Letao for the position of the GM’s assistant. Although she surprised Haiming with her futuristic ideas, all that happened in the present day, he failed her, accusing her of being a social climber targeting him and the other man at the party. However, when she ran out of sanitary pad he was looking for the market research, he gave her a package, and the game system told her that he like increased to -50%.

Back crashing at Mengmeng’s house, she suggested Huan’er attend the 30th wedding anniversary of Haiming’s parents.

Episode 3

As usual, the plot of a classic romance story includes a love rival, in this case, the usual childhood friend and the daughter of the father’s business partner, Xie Wanjun. Gao Haiming was stressed out since his father pressured him to marry Xie Wanjun, who was more than ready to marry him, even to try on a wedding dress. To get rid of this pesky woman, Haiming feigned an urgent business meeting. Huan’er used the opportunity to pull Haiming away, claiming that she was his new secretary. Huan’er spilled a glass of wine on Haiming suit, which gave him a perfect excuse to leave the party. From the novel, Huan’er knew that Haiming was stressed out with his parents’ pressure and wanted to return home to calm his nerves by building airplane models. Because of the heavy traffic, she took him home on her scooter. He still didn’t want to hire her, thought, citing that no boss wanted to have an assistant who knows him too well.

Huan’er did not lose hope. She knew from the novel that she could connect with Haiming through a company called Yunsheng. At home, she researched this company. The game acknowledged her effort and rewarded her to fast-forward the game with an accelerated plot, and suddenly she found herself working at Yunsheng as a PR specialist.

Huan’er quickly found that her manager, Xiang Lingling, was under pressure to secure a contract with Letao. Huan’er took this chance to meet Haiming again. She negotiated with her manager to make the proposal and deliver it herself. If it succeeded, her boss would take the credit. If it failed, Huan’er would take the blame. Her boss agreed, so off to Letao she went.

Episode 4

Unfortunately, Huan’er was also blacklisted in Letao. The security guard didn’t let her in. Doesn’t matter if she was there legally as a rep from Yunsheng. Not giving up, Huan’er pulled a stunt by appearing outside the window where Haiming was having a business meeting, suspended by safety ropes like a window washer. The commotion forced Haiming to let her inside and she presented her proposal. She got a fine, but at least, Haiming agreed to review her proposal. Most important, the game pager informed her that she passed Quest One: Professionally Linking Up with Gao Haiming. Quest Two was harder: Gaining Gao Haiming’s Affection! His like rating was now -5%.

Without Huan’er permission, Haiming used her proposal’s strategy to fix his company problem. Letao was saved and his father used this business victory to strategically announce Haiming’s engagement to Xie Wanjun, the heiress of Fuchuang Group. Haiming didn’t, he headed to Yunsheng instead to make a contract, but with a condition that Huan’er handle the Letao account with Yunsheng. Huan’er who was pissed because Haiming used her idea without permission demanded 20% service fee and Haoming readily agreed. The game beeper notified that she gained Haiming’s like to 0%. Her boss, Mr. Fang, immediately put her to work, but even before she started, Xie Wanjun stormed into their office. Arrogantly, she wanted Mr. Fang to fire Huan’er and she would sign a 10-year contract between Fuchang and Yunsheng. Huan’er used reverse psychology to taunt Wanjun, stating that Yunsheng fired her, she could easily get a job at Letao and be even closer to Haiming. Wanjun realized that and signed contract with Yunsheng right away, with a condition that Huan’er would solely handled Fuchang account. Mr. Fang was so happy Huan’er secured two big accounts in one day and treated Huan’er like his lucky charm.

The next day, Huan’er went to Letao to deliver her proposal directly to Haiming. The game system rewarded her with a random gift to speed up her relationship progress. After she confirmed, a super glue suddenly showed up in the air and squirted onto her jacket. Haiming arrived and bumped into her, which caused her to be literally stuck to Haiming! Haiming started taking off his shirt, but she suggested cutting it. He took Huan’er to the front office, among the shocked employees, and borrowed a pair of scissors. The glued area is shaped like a heart! Haiming commented that she always made a memorable entrance, but secretly smiled. After leaving his office, Huan’er smiled, too, thinking back about Haiming’s muscular body when he unbuttoned his shirt.

Episode 5

Huan’er was stopped by Chairman Gao, Haiming’s father, to have a private talk. He offered her money to stay away from his son. Huan’er knew this kind of man, so after negotiation, she asked for 5,000 yuan. The chairman’s ego was hurt since his son was worth that low, so he threw 50,000 yuan cash to Huan’er, which she accepted happily. Haiming’s assistant watched her getting out of the Chairman’s limo and reported to Haiming. His likes toward her dropped -50%, but he knew they both got what they wanted, as he planned to use her to fight his father. He told his assistant to spread a gossip to Wanjun about him and Huan’er.

Haiming asked her to meet him to clarify the misunderstanding, that he actually didn’t steal her idea, but he had a similar idea he implemented to fix the company issue, even before she submitted her proposal. He gave her a model plane which he assembled carefully, and told her to give it to someone she loved. Moreover, to express his genuine apology, he asked her for a dinner date at an Italian restaurant. Knowing about him from the novel, Huan’er stated that she was a psychic and revealed some of his info. Haiming could guess she tried to remember info about him, so it was not a psychic evaluation, but she had studied him. Later, her key was left in his car, and he tracked her down eating wonton at a roadside stall. Knowing that someone was following him with a camera, he purposely fed her a spoonful of wonton and leaned close to her just to create a romantic shot. He just told her not to give up on her PR job to understand him. After returning home, Huan’er checked her pager, but his like percentage towards her didn’t increase.

When Haiming returned, his father, who got the photos of the affair, urged him to marry Wanjun instead of having an affair with that “unsavory woman”, which he meant Huan’er. However, Haiming’s mother supported whatever Haiming wanted to do, so Haiming called Huan’er to set another date. This date was outdoors at the park, where they played archery. He taught her archery, so we got another romantic scene. After that, they had a picnic at the park. She asked him whom she should give the model plane to. Haiming didn’t want to be involved in her love life; he only wanted to be a catalyst. In another way, he didn’t have any feelings for her.

Episode 6

Gossip about Haiming and Huan’er circulated with their date photos. His father was fuming, Wanjun was heartbroken, and Huan’er felt irony because Haiming used her instead of her, as the main player in this game, should use him. Mengmeng warned her that she was playing a dangerous game. The next day, when her boss wanted to give her a promotion and a bonus for the Letao deal, Huan’er rejected and credited the work to her supervisor Lingling. In this case, Lingling treated Huan’er nicely and even instructed all staff to fully support Huan’er. Her relationship with her colleagues was harmonious now, but not with Wanjun.

Wanjun demanded Huan’er deliver a contract to her villa in the mountains. At first, Huan’er refused, but her game system told her to comply, or she would get a punishment. After delivering the proposal, Huan’er not only missed the only bus that went down the mountain by 1 minute. All NPCs that either drove or rode by didn’t want to stop, so she finally realized that only the Male Lead could save her. However, she didn’t have a phone, and suddenly, a phone booth magically appeared! She only had 10 cents to make a quick call to Haiming. Actually, Haiming had already gotten someone to follow her and knew that Wanjun forced her to go to the mountains. Then it started to rain. Huan’er dreamed of Haiming appearing like a knight saving a damsel in distress. A knight came alright, but he was not Haiming, but a taxi driver, who happened to have a towel, a jacket, clean socks, and slippers. Huan’er thought it was the game that gave her the care package, but actually, it was Haiming who ordered the taxi. He didn’t want her to know that he cared, but after the taxi left, he showed up quietly from his hiding place and took her wet shoes.

Huan’er went to the Fuchang Group office late to return the documents. She confronted Wanjun, who was secretly happy seeing Huan’er soaking wet. Huan’er directly told Wanjun that targeting her wouldn’t win Haiming’s heart. She advised Wanjun to stop being the supporting character in someone else’s story and become the female lead of her own life.

The following day, Wanjun arrived at Haiming’s office with homemade cookies. Huan’er was there, and she was sick from the rain. Wanjun was angry when Huan’er told her that Haiming didn’t eat sweets and wanted to hit her. However, Haiming defended Huan’er, and even took her home because she was sick.

At home, her sister reported about debt collectors at her parents’ home. Huan’er rushed there, only to find that the ‘debt collectors’ were men sent by Gao Mingshan to take her to meet him. At the meeting place, Haiming’s father secretly live-recorded their convo, to show his son that Huan’er was a gold digger. Gao Mingshan asked her directly how much more money she wanted. Although she agreed that she had her own plans, Haiming was not a puppet who could be controlled. Huan’er criticized Gao Mingshan want to control his son, didn’t understand his son, didn’t know what he needed or wanted, and didn’t care about him at all. Huan’er returned the money Gao Mingshan gave her last time, and she walked out with dignity. When she opened the door, Haiming was standing outside!

Episode 7

Haiming confronted his father while Huan’er waited outside and heard their convo. He said that Huan’er only met Gao Mingshan once or twice, but she knew his father only solved problems with money. His father argued that 95% problems in this world could be solved with money, but Haiming argued that there were still 5% that were unsolvable. He left to take Huan’er home, and when she was home, she saw his like percentage increased to 38%!

While at work, Huan’er suddenly received a package of a new phone. There was only a number there. Because the phone looked like Mengmeng’s, Huan’er thought her rich bestie gifted her a new phone. She called the number to thank her. It was not Mengmeng who answered the phone, but Wanjun. Wanjun warned Huan’er to stop bothering Haiming because she and him were engaged and today they were finalizing the marriage plan.

Huan’er sneaked into the Gao Family’s mansion to stop the engagement. Wanjun returned Haiming’s phone to him and told him that Huan’er called. Concerned, he went to his room to give her a secret call, but Huan’er was already there. She was staring at her pair of shoes, which she lost in the mountains, cleaned and put in a plastic bag.

Haiming asked why she was here, and Huan’er said she would rescue him because she thought he wouldn’t marry for business. Suddenly, they heard Wanjun call Haiming from downstairs. Huan’er asked Haiming if he wanted to get rid of her for good and pulled him into a fake kiss by putting her finger between their lips. Wanjun showed up and was very angry seeing them ‘kissing’. She wanted to hit Huan’er, but Haiming blocked her and simply told Wanjun, “That’s why I cannot get engaged to you.” Wanjun stormed off howling, and Haiming told Huan’er to leave (with her sneakers). The rest was a hell broke loose! But Haiming’s level still hadn’t increased.

Episode 8

Finally, Haiming stood his ground, didn’t want to marry Wanjun, and didn’t want to be controlled by his father. Gao Mingshan used money to punish his son, and Fuchang Group used money to retaliate. Haiming’s company, Letao Group, was in big trouble, and it seemed Haiming had to start from scratch again. Gao Mingshan acquired 60% of Letao’s shares and put pressure on his son so he would surrender.

Sensing Haiming’s distress, Huan’er invited him for a coffee she brewed herself with a modern recipe for calming and relaxation. She also gave him a special doll for stress relief and neck massage. They talked about his company’s problem, and later Huan’er secretly made him a list of potential collab partners, since his previous partners quit being pressured by either Gao Mingshan or Fuchang Group. She also had a preliminary discussion with a certain scientist she knew from modern time would collab with Letao Group. At first, Haiming thought his assistant compiled the list, but later he found that Huan’er made it.

While Haiming was striving with his company, Huan’er kept an eye on the news to help when needed. She spotted a news article about Dr. Wei Dazhuang, a genius researcher. From the novel, Huan’er knew this scientist would play a crucial role in Letao Group. So she proposed that Haiming meet Dr. Wei.

Luckily, Haiming asked Huan’er to accompany him in finding Dr. Wei at a resort, since the scientist didn’t have any interest in the products Haiming was developing. However, Dr. Wei was a motorcycle enthusiast. It happened that Huan’er was also a rider herself and knew a lot about motorcycles and riding bikes. She gave advice based on her modern knowledge, and even helped Dr. Wei change the oil and filter. Although Dr. Wei didn’t want to work with Haiming, he was interested in knowing more about motorcycles and riding with Huan’er, so she used his interest as a dangling carrot to talk more with her and Haiming the next day.

At night, they went to a barbecue party and a bonfire. While talking to Dr. Wei’s assistant, she asked why Haiming and Huan’er were so sure that the scientist could help them. Haiming declared that he trusts Huan’er suggesting Dr. Wei’s expertise, because she was never wrong.

Episode 9

To Haoming and Huan’er surprise, the woman, whom they assumed was Dr. Wei’s assistant, was the true Dr. Wei Dazhuang. The man was her brother, Wei Daqiang. Dr. Wei quit her previous due to gender discrimination at her previous institute. She had observed Haoming and Huan’er efforts and sincerity, so she decided to join Letao Group.

Later, during a company meeting, the game system gave her a side quest to kiss Haoming. She did, in front of the stunned employees, and it was mortifying that she blurted out that everyone here, including Haoming, was just fictional characters. Of course, the game rewinded the scene, but Huan’er opted to skip the quest, and she got only three chances left.

Well, the game seemed favor her, despite she skipped the kissing side quest. Haoming asked her to go with him, not for a business purpose, but to go to the plane model workshop where he hand-assembles fighter jets. He was looking for a way to bond further with Huan’er for common interest. He asked Huan’er to paint his latest model, which he worked on, and she used vibrant colors, explaining her hope for the upcoming millennium. When he admitted he believed in parallel worlds, she said that her other version in the parallel world might not have any memory of this world, so she didn’t want to have any regret. She then saw a paint stain on his chin and gently wiped it off. Their hearts raced and the game system increased his like to 59%. Yay!

However, the winning didn’t last long. Being cautious, before continuing his personal relationship with Huan’er, he asked his assistant to investigate her personal background. Haoming found out that Huan’er had been in a relationship with Ou Xiaojue, her boyfriend of seven years, and even supported his overseas study financially. Haoming was very angry and jealous, because she had a boyfriend, yet she continued to pursue him. She must did that to get as much money she could to support her boyfriend. He shut her down and was back cold and impersonal to her.

Episode 10

The revelation about Huan’er current relationship with her boyfriend was disturbing, so Haoming went to see her boss at Yunsheng, Mr. Fang. He wanted to continue their partnership, even offering 3% of the profits with one condition: Huan’er be put in charge of marketing for female products and work directly at his office. Of course, Mr. Fang agreed without asking for Huan’er’s consent.

After moving to Letao, Haoming basically ‘tortured’ Huan’er with a lot of work. She worked overtime till night, although he ordered his assistant to bring her wontons, which they had eaten at the roadside stall last time. Huan’er was confused about his cold and harsh attitude, and Mengmeng thought that it was probably because of Huan’er’s boyfriend. Huan’er decided to test Haoming by bringing an air mist spray from the UK to the office. She purposely told her colleagues that her friend from the UK gave her. The next time, Haoming gave her a box of air mist sprays from Hong Kong. Huan’er thought there were too many, so she gave them all away to her colleagues. Haoming was even angrier, and he told her that from now on, she would replace his assistant and had to pick her up the next day at 7 am.

When she picked him up the next day, she saw that his tie knot was comely. Since she knew how to make a fancier knot, she redid his tie. When he asked how she knew this, she said she specifically studied it because of a certain man. Haoming mistakenly thought she did it for her boyfriend, so after he said he didn’t go to the office, he left her driving his car. Huan’er arrived at the office by taxi, only to find out that Haoming had been there since early morning! The whole day Huan’er had to work on the piles given to her, which made her colleagues wonder if she and their boss were fighting.

Finally, when the work hour was over, and she finished the tasks, she got an email from her ‘boyfriend’. Curious about how Ou Xiaojue looked, she opened his photos and found him quite good-looking and amusing. While Huan’er was laughing at seeing his 90’s style, Haoming was grumpily sitting behind her. He told her to come with him, only to bring her to a restaurant where Mengmeng and her boyfriend Hu Tiehan, who was also Haoming’s friend, were already there!

Episode 11

Well, it was not Mengmeng and Tiehan’s plan to meet old friends from high school during their date; Haoming purposely bumped into them. They ended up reminiscing about Huan’er, Mengmeng, and Tiehan’s high school days. Haoming wanted to know about Huan’er’s past and, of course, Ou Xiaojue, because the four of them, minus Haoming, went to the same high school. Huan’er kept changing the convo about her and her ‘boyfriend’ to Tiehan and Mengmeng’s relationship. Haoming got drunk during dinner, so Huan’er had to walk him home. The drunk Haoming was so cute, because he was grumpy. She asked him to chose out of two options of emotion: either he liked her or he was jealous. He chose his third option: he hated her. She didn’t believe it. But that was the exact emotion that night, since he called a radio broadcasting company and requested a song for a woman he hated and gave her name out. Oops!

The next morning, when Haiming sobered up and got a phone call from the broadcasting company to confirm his order for noon airing, he couldn’t even cancel it! Panicked, Haiming tried hard to avoid Huan’er from listening to the song. He gave her a task to go to Dr. Wei’s lab, personally drove her there instead of taking a taxi, lied that his car radio was broken, etc. Well, it seemed his attempt worked, because she never heard about his radio dedication.

Haiming had to fly to Italy for an urgent business meeting. On the day of his return, his flight was reported to have lost contact for over two hours. Worried, Huan’er and Assistant Luo rushed to the airport. When fervently praying for the flight’s safety. When she saw him walking out of the arrival gate, she couldn’t help but hug him the moment she met him. This emotional reunion triggered his feelings that she cared about him, and the game notified Huan’er that she completed Quest 2, and Haiming’s like rate increased to 60%. The Question 3 started, which was making him fall for her and propose marriage. This was even more difficult.

Suddenly, there was a woman’s voice interrupting their sweet reunion. No, it was not Xie Wanjun’s. It was someone else, but she was with a man Huan’er recognized… he was Ou Xiaojue!

Episode 12

They run into Haiming’s classmate, Cheng Die’en, and a longtime family friend of the Gao family. She was accompanied by Ou Xiaojue. Of course, Huan’er and Xiaojue recognized each other, and even Haiming sensed that the man in front of him was Huan’er boyfriend. He introduced her as his assistant. Die’en introduces Xiaojue as her classmate in UK and…, Before Die’en continued the “and” part, Xiaojue interrupted and told Haiming that he heard about Haiming before. Haiming hinted to Huan’er that she told him once having a close friend surnamed Ou who dumped his girlfriend for another girl, but not this Ou Xiaojue! Huan’er and Xiaojue acknowledged each other as being high school friends, and Haiming again hinted to Die’en that he heard from her parents that Die’en has a boyfriend. Luckily, the game system forced Huan’er to break up with Xiaojue amicably, and Huan’er asked Xiaojue to repay every cent of the tuition and living expenses she provided, with interest. Although not emotionally attached, Huan’er had the satisfaction of throwing a glass of water at Xiaojue when they broke up. Xiaojue then tried to spread gossip about Huan’er and Haiming, but Mengmeng defended her bestie.

Conclusion

The drama already put all the villains’ cards on the table: Gao Mingshan, Xie Wanjun, and Ou Xiaojue. But they were all NPCs in this game. My main concern was Lin Huan’er herself. What would she do? I knew she wanted to return to her time/world, but to what expense? Or whose expense? Let’s continue to the final part of this highlight article series.
