The Twin Gambit: Love in Different Patterns

9 min read

Introduction

When I first found out about this drama, I hesitated after reading the synopsis because of tropes I hate. First, there is a love triangle, and secondly, a competition between two sisters, who are on good terms at first, over one man. However, I craved for a good Thai romcom, and after watching the first few episodes, I really liked it because of the clever way the drama plays with the love triangle and female rivalry tropes, and there is no audience’s favoritism on who should be with whom. I will put a spoiler about the tropes in the Review/Story section if you want to watch this drama but are hesitant because of the love triangle and female rivalry tropes. There are also all spoilers you may want to know at the end of the article.

Secondly, I fell for the protagonist, Cream, right away. She is such a fun persona. I will introduce her in the Character section. To me, Cream is the Female Lead, and her sister, Cake, is the Second Female Lead. The story is about Cream. Cream and Cake are played by the same actress who wore a person-of-size suit for Cream’s character. Although she wore the suit only for 4 episodes, you will see the actress’ painful transformation to Cream in the Review/The Visuals section.

Lastly, about my article title. The native title Rak Salap Lai simply translates to “Love in Different/Alternating Patterns”. As Cream is a fashion designer, the word “pattern” really represents the protagonist’s identity.

Characters

Main Characters

Pooklook Fonthip Watcharatrakul ( ปุ๊กลุก ฝนทิพย์ วัชรตระกูล ) as Cream/Fresh

Cream is a 24-year-old young woman who is cheerful and confident. She loves fashion design and has her own online fashion business for plus-sized women. She designs and makes the clothing herself. Most of her designs are bold and colorful. She dreams of being a top designer and attending Paris Fashion Week in the future. However, Cream suffers from asthma, hypothyroidism, and metabolic damage that negatively affect her body weight and health. When she joins the Youth Designer Contest to achieve her dream, her life is completely changed.

Fresh is the name she uses when she met Tul again (since she cannot her own name).

Pooklook Fonthip Watcharatrakul ( ปุ๊กลุก ฝนทิพย์ วัชรตระกูล ) as Cake

Cake is Cream’s twin sister. She’s calm and cautious. I’m not sure if she’s a salesperson for a condominium company or if she’s an independent/freelance realtor. She has a chic and glamorous persona, a typical urban modern career woman. She and Cream, although they walk on different paths of life, are close to each other and live together with their dear Aunt Su. When she agrees to impersonate her sister, Cream, at the Youth Designer Contest, her life is completely changed.

Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat ( มิว ศุภศิษฏ์ จงชีวีวัฒน์ ) as Tul

He is the owner of Dreamer Fashion House. Although he doesn’t have a talent for fashion design, he inherited the company from his late mother, who was a fashion designer.

He was a high schoolmate of Cream.

Bank Artit Tangwiboonpanit ( แบงค์ อาทิตย์ ตั้งวิบูลย์พาณิชย์ ) as Pete/Patrick

He is the representative of P&Y, an American fashion company that Dreamer wants to be its Thai subsidiary. Unfortunately, he and Tul were not on good terms while in the university.

Patrick is Pete’s American name.

Supporting Characters

There are many supporting characters, but I only want to introduce you to two supportive supporting characters of our heroines.

Wine (Preen Ravisrarat Pibulpanuvat) – Cream’s bestie and an employee in Dreamer.

Aunt Su (Mai Natha Lloyd) – Cream and Cake’s aunt.

Review

Story and Plot

The romance is the major genre of this drama. The comedic part is not slapstick a la Thai dramas, and is done well. The hilarious scenes ensue when the twins try to cover their hidden identities from Tul and Pete, and the covering also involves Aunt Su and Wine (the only two characters who know about the identity swaps).

As I wrote in the Introduction above, I like how the drama cleverly tackles the love triangle and female rivalry tropes. I will describe them below in spoiler tags.

About the love triangle

There is no real love triangle. Each girl has her own love interest from the beginning. Cream and Tul were friends in high school, but there was a misunderstanding that caused Cream to have a bad memory of him. Cake and Pete have met before she met Tul, and they flirt with each other. Tul doesn’t have any feelings with either girl in the beginning. He met Cream again after her sister worked on her behalf at his company. Her past misunderstanding, then, is cleared up. She lies that her name is Fresh and they become friends. He only admires ‘Cream’ talent, but after the real Cream works at his company, he starts liking her personally. Meanwhile, Pete, although he thinks that the girl he met and fell for is called Cream, but she’s actually Cake.

Confusing, right? I cannot elaborate more of the spoiler. As for the reason why Cream covers for her sister and takes back her identity, it’s a big spoiler I cannot reveal. It’s the major plot of the drama.

About the female rivalry

There is no real female rivalry that makes you hate one or prefer the other. The girls are close to each other. There is a bit of rivalry that starts in Episode 2 when Cake has a crush on Tul, while Cream accidentally meets Tul again and they become friends. Cake tells Cream that she likes Tul and wants to pursue him, and is angry that Cream meets him. Cream wants to lose weight, partly because of the rivalry.

Although the romance is the major genre of this drama, the theme is the heroine, Cream, pursuing her dream career as a fashion designer. Therefore, we also have a business genre, with fierce competition in the fashion world between designers and fashion houses. Of course, since it’s a Thai lakorn, these work and business competitions are exaggerated, but they won’t take away your enjoyment!

Adding to the business genre, which shows how the fashion industry works in a company, we also see their efforts to introduce Thai traditional brocade, as shown below. That’s what I like about Thai dramas, that they almost always promote Thailand, either the customs, costumes, food, tourism places, etc.

The storyline flows smoothly, there is no disjoint in the plot. This is commendable, especially after I found out that this drama has 5 screenwriters!

Character and Acting

As the leading actress Pooklook played two characters with opposite personalities, and each character has her own love interest, then how is her acting, and how is her chemistry with the two leading actors?

The leading actress playing as two characters with different personalities

Despite having to wear a heavy and hot person-of-size suit, Pooklook did a great job of playing the cheerful Cream. Cake’s calm and elegant personality is also very different from Cream’s. When Cake becomes Cream, she uses her own personality. However, once Cream becomes Cake (taking over her sister’s personality), her personality seems to blend with her sister’s, and she becomes serious. I hardly see the trace of cheerful Cream, although both Tul and Pete sense differences. I understand that there is a legitimate reason why Cream has to be as serious as Cake, but still, the sunny Cream suddenly disappears.

Chemistry with both leading actors

Pooklook has great chemistry with her two co-actors, as with Cream and Cake. However, the type of chemistry is different. With Tul, Cream’s chemistry is cute and natural, as once the misunderstanding is cleared, they start their relationship as friends.

With Pete, Cake and his chemistry is hot, especially when they met for the first time and flirted with each other.

The Green-Flag Male Leads

The most common question asked in romance dramas is usually how the male lead is. In this drama, both Tul and Pete are green flags. I like both characters. They both consistently demonstrate positive qualities like respect, support, and emotional maturity in their relationships with Cream and Cake. No two-timing.

Tul is a more serious and reserved person, and his personality matches with the more cheerful Cream. Before Cream loses weight, he doesn’t have any prejudice or judgment towards Cream’s physical size or eating habits, and genuinely befriends her.

In the contrary, Pete is more playful and flirty, his personality matches with the more serious and reserved Cake. Pete was a player in school, according to Tul. But his love for Cake is sincere.

The Visuals

The Cinematography

I have to commend the director and the editor for making the scenes of Cream and Cake together. Although in some scenes they have to use a double in a scene together, for example, the high school photo, which shows that they are different. However, most scenes of the twins close to each other, either before or after Cream loses weight, are put together flawlessly. For example, this scene below.

The Costumes

The costumes, oh my god, are to die for. All characters who work in the fashion industry wear either professional or fashionable clothes. The production budget doesn’t shy in spending money on costumes. The production also seems to have hired real fashion designers to design the costumes used for competitions. You have seen the Thai brocade design in the above. Below is another example of Cream’s design that glows in the dark with illumination!

The Special Effect

Although Pooklook only wore the person-of-size suit for 4 episodes, the process of creating and wearing it seemed like real pain for the actress. During the creation of the facial prosthesis, Pooklook developed a fear of being confined inside the mask. When it was done, she cried and explained during the interview that she had found out that she had a claustrophobia (a specific phobia characterized by an intense and irrational fear of enclosed or confined spaces). What a dedication! After this drama, I would love to check out her future projects.

The second video below shows the speed-up process of creating Cream, between her eating and studying the script. It takes several hours!

Although the person-of-size suit was created meticulously, we can still see imperfections in the makeup department. For example, the screenshot below shows the difference between the darker facial prosthesis color and Pooklook’s lighter natural skin color.

Conclusion

In conclusion, The Twin Gambit is a fun Thai romcom with a good pace story that, besides showing the romance between two couples with some humor, also shows the beauty of Thai fashion through its costumes and the spiciness of lakorn through its high stakes, conflict, and danger. One of the best lakorn out there in 2025, in my opinion.

Spoilers

What is the ending?

Happy ending

Who are the couples?

Cream and Tul, Cake and Pete. No other side couples.

Why the switch?

Actually, it’s not a switch. Cream has a bad memory of Tul in high school. When she finds out that he’s the judge of the Young Designer Competition she joined, she gets a panic attack and cannot bring herself to stand in front of him. So she begs her sister Cake to be her. Fortunately, but unfortunately, Cream wins the competition, and Tul wants to hire her as the creative director of his fashion company. After passing the job interview, Cake starts working as Cream at Tul’s company.

When and why does Cream lose weight?

Episode 4. Partly, it’s the competition between her and Cake over Tul. However, the biggest reason is that as ‘Cream’ starts her career in the fashion industry, Cream cannot depend on Cake all the time. Cake has her real estate job, and she has no fashion talent. Eventually, her dream is to attend Paris Fashion Week.

Is there any love triangle, and how is it?

Not really a love triangle, so it’s not bad at all. Cake has a crush on Tul, but she had already met Pete before meeting Tul as Cake. After the misunderstanding is cleared, Cream becomes closer to Tul as friends. Tul starts to have a feeling for the real Cream after she takes back her identity and keeps working at Tul’s company.

When does Tul find out about the twins?

Episode 12

When does Pete find out about the twins?

Episode 10
