Although the serial killing case seemed to be brought to light in Veil of Shadows: Drama Info and Recap Episodes 1 to 4, there was still more to the mystery.
Recap Episodes 5 to 8
Episode 5
Ji Ling explained to everyone the elaborate scheme Yu Shengwei and Luo Wei had made with the help of Xiao Wei to trick the hunters and the foxes. Yes, Yu Shengwei and Luo Wei were besties. Shengwei, not Wei Qing, took in Luo Wei. Wei Qing used the love talisman to put a spell on Yu Shengwei. When she finally realized being duped, she wanted to fake her death and run away with Luo Wei. Xiao Wei would help with tricking the detectives. However, Luo Wei actually wanted to take over the Wei family property. She had copied Wei Qing’s handwriting and made a document to leave everything to her when the couple died. She ended up killing her bestie using fake claws to mimic fox demon’s. Before dying, Shengwei took out a chestnut cake, thinking that her bestie had made it. But Luo Wei knew nothing about it, since Xiao Wei was the one who always made them. Luo Wei then complained that the human in front of her didn’t know anything about poverty. Shiguang reminded her that her kindhearted bestie took her in, yet Luo Wei was ungrateful.
It turned out that Xiao Wei was not a killer. Wei Qing died because of his love talisman. Luo Wei killed Yu Shengwei. Xiao Wei handed over the cursed wedding registry to the hunters. When Shiguang and Ji Ling burned it, the curse disappeared. In grief, Xiao Wei wanted to revive Shengwei using the forbidden power. Shenwei couldn’t be revived, but the power triggered the dead curse put on Xiao Wei by the Formless Moon Palace. With a sisterly bond, Wangyan and Wuyi shielded Xiao Wei from the ice shards.

Xiao Wei sought freedom, suffered herself with a docked tail, and went all through the world looking for the reincarnation of her benefactor. Sadly, when found, the reincarnation didn’t remember her past and didn’t realize Xiao Wei’s silent care. Her saga was so tragic that the hunters and the foxes philosophically discussed whether demons understood love. Ji Ling, despite having flirted heavily with Wuyi, knew nothing about love. On the other hand, Shiguang, the rogue hunter, remembered his father’s love by sacrificing his life for him. Wangyan remembered the sect life wistfully when Xiao Wei was still with them. Wuyi questioned whether demon’s tears were fake, as she saw Xiao Wei’s hot tears turn to ice.

Shiguang wanted to join the Shilin Sect and approached Ji Ling, who agreed Shiguang posed as a bounty hunter helping him and Li Jie catch Xiao Wei. They would bring Xiao Wei back to the Sect. The problem was that the fox demons were also entitled to Xiao Wei, because she ran away from their sect.

Although they caught Xiao Wei and the police took Luo Wei, a bigger mystery remained: who orchestrated the cursed love talismans? Xiao Wei, in her female form, as seen in the above image, ran the marriage temple and gave out love talismans without backlash curses. There must be someone who cursed them. Ji Ling and Li Jie questioned Xiao Wei, who revealed that a terrifying butterfly demon named Yuan Wuhuo had come to see her. He would tell her where her benefactor was, in exchange for two things: the nine-tailed power she had lent to the Dragon Deity and the secret to reversing the love talisman. Yuan Wuhuo used Heavenly Sticks to locate Xiao Wei’s benefactor. It was an ancient tool that cost the shortened life span of the user. With the reverse spell of the love talisman, Yuan Wuhuo terrorized the city.

The foxes told Shiguang that the Dragon Deity could lift the Fox Allure Spell. But rumors had it that Dragon Deity son, Chi Wen, no longer had power. Chi Wen was the one we saw talking to Li Jie in the previous episode. A while ago, Chi Wen called Bai Ze. This powerful disciple, along with Xiao Wei, Wu Shiqi, and Han Ba, lent their power to Chi Wen’s Power Binding Ring. The last three betrayed their vows and retracted their power. Bai Ze thought there must be a scheme. Chi Wen asked Bai Ze to find those three. Chi Wen could only hide inside his sect until Bai Ze found the traitors and took them to the sect. Well, we found Xiao Wei!

Episode 6
Xiao Wei told Ji Ling and Li Jie that Chi Wen saved her life, so she lent him her nine-tailed power, and with three others, made a sacred oath to protect Chi Wen forever. The butterfly demon, Yuan Wuhuo, schemed to weaken Chi Wen’s power and people’s faith in him. When Chi Wen’s power diminished, his enemy and the sealed evil, Jiu Ying, would break free and return to the world.
Shiguang purposely stalled Wangyan and Wuyi, so Ji Ling and Li Jie could take Xiao Wei back to Shilin Sect. Upon realizing this, the foxes fought Shiguang. They didn’t realize that Yuan Wuhuo sneaked in the butterfly form. The butterfly landed on Xiao Wei’s shoulder and coaxed him to use the Dragon Deity’s power inside him to revive Yu Shengwei. As Xiaowei exposed the power, Yuan Wuhuo secretly absorbed the power into himself. Ji Ling and Li Jie couldn’t even touch Xiao Wei. Luckily, the more powerful hunter, Mo Yuntan, showed up. Seeing this, Yuan Wuhuo fled into the forest. Yuan Wuhuo turned into his human form. Mo Yuntan was startled to see Li Jie’s face! From Yu Wuhuan mouth came a butterfly and formed a mask, and Yuan Wuhuo used Mo Yuntan’s shock to flee.

Xiao Wei channeled the Dragon Deity’s Power from inside him, but he couldn’t handle it. He ended up fighting the hunters and the foxes, and Ji Ling was gravely injured and dying. Li Jie took Ji Ling swiftly back to the Shiling Sect, leaving Ji Ling with the ragged doll he always carried. Wuyi took it. Only Shiguang, Wuyi, and Wangyan fought Xiao Wei. The Ice Curse didn’t reveal to attack Xiao Wei, because he was using the Dragon Deity’s Power. As they knew, only Chi Wen could save Xiao Wei. Shiguang would take Yu Shengwei’s body away to the Shiling Sect to lure Xiao Wei there, and asked Wangyan and Wuyi to hold Xiao Wei as long as possible.
Li Jie arrived in Shiling Sect with Ji Ling’s body and rushed to find Chi Wen. He put Ji Ling’s body in front of the Sect Leader and told him that Ji Ling was beyond saving. Chi Wen took out Ji Ling’s ring, and Ji Ling turned into… a wooden puppet! Chi Wen then told Li Jie to dispose of the body as usual. Li Jie took the puppet into a pool and sank it onto the bottom of the pool, full of useless puppets in Chi Wen’s image! Oh… Ji Liiing!!!

Shiguang arrived at the Shiling Temple with Xiao Wei in tow. Shiguang couldn’t go through the two giant statues that blocked him. So he provoked Xiao Wei to break the statues with his Dragon Deity’s Power. Everyone but Li Jie was injured by Xiao Wei. Li Jie, who was immune to any power, and Chi Wen, with his borrowed power from Bai Ze, tried to fight Xiao Wei. He would go all out if not for Yu Shengwei, who was conscious in a moment. She heard what Xiao Wei said at the bedside and felt his sincerity. She asked him to let her die and use his power to save people. Xiao Wei eventually let her die and broke the curse to release people.

Chi Wei took the Dragon Deity’s Power back, but surprisingly, it went to Shiguang. Before passing out, Shiguang saw a vision of the Dragon Deity giving Xiao Wei, Bai Ze, Han Bao, and Wu Zhiqi part of his divine power, and also took part of their demon power to suppress Jiuyin. Chiwen ordered his disciples to take Shiguang in and took the ragdoll in Wuyi’s hand. He ignored Wuyi’s call and went back inside. Xiao Wei advised the foxes not to follow his step, then dissipated, and his power went back to Chiwen’s ring.

No more Xiao Wei, the foxes returned to their sect. However, Wuyi found that her jade pendant was missing. That was her identity token. She guessed it was pulled away together with the rag doll. She returned to the Shiling Sect and sneaked in. However, she triggered a magic alarm. At the critical moment, Shiwen showed up and dispelled the danger.
Episode 7
Prologue: When the world just began, Pan Gu’s spirit became the Dragon Deity. He had nine sons. Calamity came from Jiu Ying, the lord of all demons. He plunged the world into chaos and sparked endless war between men and demons. The nine sons of the Dragon Deity fought Jiu Ying to death. Eight of them became mountains to seal Jiu Ying away, and Chi Wen, the ninth son, was left to guard the realm. Ten years ago, a man with no memory was found unconscious near the Dragon Deity Temple. He only remembered that he had a brother. Chi Wen named him Li Jie. Since then he became Chi Wen’s close attendant.
Back to the current time with Wuyi and Chi Wen. She suspected Chi Wen and Ji Ling were the same person, so she flirted with him. This Chi Wen was not Ji Ling; he was super cold and ruthless. After choking Wuyi’s neck, he returned her jade pendant and a safety token and ordered her to leave

Chi Wen created Ji Ling 2.0. He was still the same as Ji Ling 1.0, but he thought he was a fox saved by the deity at the foot of the mountain. Chi Wen sent him off with the rag doll, the ring, and a mission. This Ji Ling still had a feeling for Wuyi. Chi Wen mocked their “love”. Ji Ling had no heart for the fox who had no feeling. Ji Ling went picking up flowers from the temple and ran to find Wuyi. They were so cute with their goodbyes. Wuyi took the flowers, although she couldn’t keep them long. She told Ji Ling she would come find him.

The Double Flowers Mo Yuntan came to report to Chi Wen about the butterfly demon Yuan Wuhuo. The name was similar to the former sect commander who passed away, but with a different meaning. Mo Yuntan also mentioned that the demon looked like Li Jie. Chi Wen didn’t think seriously about it. Another disciple, Bai Ze, came and told Chi Wen that the reason the Dragon Deity Power went into Shiguang was because of his magical prayer beads, which contained dragon teeth. Chi Wen sent Ji Ling and Li Jie to get the beads from Shiguang.

Of course, the ever-wary Shiguang knew his beads were sought after; he even planned to kill the Dragon Deity for a long time. Upon scuffle, Li Jie revealed Shiguang demonic tattoo. He was from the Flood Dragon Clan, and the Shiling Sect annihilated his clan. The Sect feared Jiu Ying would arise again, so they killed all demon clans.
We went to the Formless Moon Palace, where Wangyan and Wuyi were talking to the Sect Master. The Master ordered them to kill Chi Wen. The reason was that Chi Wen had been corrupted by Ji Ying and fed on humans. There would be someone with Dragon Power who could kill Chi Wen. Hmmm… Shiguang?
Back to the Shilin Sect, Ji Ling tried to retrieve the beads, but his arm was severed by Shiguang. It revealed that his arm was made of wood. Both Shiguang and Youchi, who was in hostage, realized that Ji Ling was a mere puppet, not the Dragon Deity.
Episode 8
Poor Wuyi! She had killed many people and demons during the missions with Wangyan. But this mission was different because she fell for Ji Ling, and he resembled the likeness of her target, Chi Wen. Wangyan secretly left her. Her letter stated that she would carry the mission alone, because Wuyi might not be able to kill Chi Wen. In fact, Wangyan was a double agent! She made a pact with Chi Wen for the foxes’ freedom, and she would help Chi Wen recover his lost Dragon Deity Power. Wangyan thought that the Formless Moon Sect was no longer sanctuary for the foxes, but a prison. Xiao Wei was an example. Chi Wen ordered Wangyan to get the prayer beads from Shiguang.
Shiguang was captured by the ever-powerful Li Jie, but he had hidden his prayer beads. Li Jie guarded him with less powerful guards, to let Shiguang release himself and lead him to the beads. Wangyan tricked Li Jie and seduced Shiguang in a hot spring. Although wary of Wangyan, Shiguang’s heart was racing. He then made a deal with her to show him the next location of the Dragon Deity’s piece, and he would cooperate with her.

Apparently, the Fox Queen was already suspicious of Wangyan, so she asked Wuyi to investigate her sister. Wuyi found her with Shiguang outside the hot spring. Wangyan pretended that she had a secret mission to help Shiguang. When the foxes were alone, Wuyi hugged Wangyan and smelled Chi Wen’s fragrance. She then stole the temple token from Wangyan.

After finding out that he was a puppet, the broken-hearted Ji Ling confronted his master. Chi Wen told him coldly that he was just a puppet and not a fox. Chi Wen implanted all Ji Lings’ memories. He took Ji Ling to the room full of unfinished puppets. Ji Ling insisted on his loyalty and also that he was unique. But a rebellious puppet was no longer useful for Chi Wen. He took out the heart stone, which contained Ji Ling’s memory, and Ji Ling turned into a puppet. Chi Wen realized someone was there. It was Wuyi! After stealing Wangyan’s token, she hunted Ji Ling down and came to this place. Just in time to see Chi Wen turn her beloved into a puppet!
