Story and Plot
Story
The biggest selling point of Pulling Strings is definitely the main character, Li Changshou. He’s not your typical impulsive xianxia/xuanhuan hero who runs toward danger without thinking. Li Changshou is cautious, calculating, and always thinking several steps ahead. Honestly, he spends more time figuring out how to avoid trouble than getting into it.
The story mixes cultivation, comedy, political schemes, and action, so there’s quite a bit going on.
To show off his hidden power, Li Changshou disguises himself as Chang Geng
Comedy
The humor is one of the things that keeps Pulling Strings from becoming too heavy. A lot of the comedy comes from Li Changshou’s extreme caution and the contrast between what he is secretly planning and what everyone else thinks is happening.
Some jokes land really well, while others can feel a little repetitive. Still, I appreciated that the drama doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Romance
The relationship between Li Changshou and Fairy Yun Xiao are more complicated than simply throwing them together and calling it romance. If you’re watching the drama mainly for romance, it probably won’t satisfy you as much as a romance-heavy xianxia/xuanhuan.
The cultivation storyline and larger schemes clearly take priority.

Action
As usual in xianxia/xuanhuan dramas, the action sequences have plenty of flashy cultivation abilities, battles, and special effects.
When Li Changshou finally decides to stop hiding and actually shows what he can do, those moments are especially satisfying. I like that his fighting style reflects his personality — he doesn’t just charge in. He thinks, prepares, and looks for the safest way to win.
That said, some action scenes/battles can get a little over-the-top, with lots of effects flying across the screen.
The partners-in-crime: Li Changshou and Lan Ling’e
Plot
I really enjoyed the survival-strategy aspect of the story. Watching Li Changshou quietly set up plans while everyone else has no idea what he’s doing is a lot of fun.
However, the plot can get complicated. There are plenty of characters, sects, factions, and schemes to keep track of. Sometimes the plot takes a little too long to get where it’s going, especially when the focus shifts seriously toward cultivation details and larger world-building.

Characterization
Li Changshou is easily the highlight of the drama. I love that he doesn’t want to be a hero. His first instinct is basically, “Can I stay out of this?”
He hides his abilities, keeps a low profile, and rarely makes a move without having a backup plan — and probably a backup plan for the backup plan. His cautious personality makes him very different from the usual hot-blooded/naive xianxia/xuanhuan male leads.
At times, though, he is so calculating that you feel that he’s too slow. If you prefer a more emotional or passionate protagonist, Li Changshou may take some getting used to.
The supporting characters also add plenty of personality and help keep the story entertaining. Some characters are more memorable than others, like the ones listed in the Supporting Characters section above, especially since the drama keeps introducing new characters.
The eccentric Aunt Jiu Jiu
Acting
Ao Rui Peng’s stellar performance works because Li Changshou needs to come across as calm and intelligent without becoming completely emotionless.
Overall, the cast generally fits the lighthearted tone well.
The Visuals
The drama has the beautiful fantasy look you’d expect from a xianxia/xuanhuan. The cultivation world, costumes, magical effects, and scenery give it a nice sense of scale. There are plenty of colorful and spectacular moments, especially during the bigger battles.
In my opinion, some of the effects feel a little too CGI-heavy, but overall the visual presentation works well for the story.

Conclusion
Overall, Pull Strings is a fun change from the usual xianxia/xuanhuan formula. Instead of giving us a hero who rushes into danger with a sword in hand, we get someone who would much rather stay hidden, think ten steps ahead, and survive another day. That alone makes Li Changshou a refreshing character to watch.
The story can get a little complicated, and the pacing isn’t always perfect, but the clever schemes, unexpected twists, comedy, and satisfying moments when Li Changshou finally reveals what he’s capable of kept me entertained. It may not be the most emotionally intense historical fantasy I’ve watched, but if you enjoy smart protagonists, hidden powers, and a hero who would rather pull the strings than be caught in them, Pull Strings is definitely worth giving a try.

The ultimate villain sought to force the next apocalypse to prove his worth. With help from his junior sister Lan Ling E’s Chaos Bell, Li Changshou shatters the celestial sundial (the symbol of predestined doom) and replaces it to become the new heavenly Dao—at the cost of erasing himself from everyone’s memories.
Five years later, Fairy Yun Xiao is the only one who still remembers Li Changshou. She uses ancestral witch blood to refine herself into a new sea-calming needle to seal away the resurrected Demon Emperor, disappearing in the process.
Heaven hints that Yun Xiao’s scattered soul might eventually be reclaimed through divine cultivation, and the drama ends explicitly marked as “To Be Continued,” leaving the ultimate doom unresolved for a potential second season.
