What is Cold Palace?
The “Cold Palace” (Lenggong, 冷宫) in Chinese palace dramas is a metaphorical and practical designation for the neglected, remote, or rundown quarters where imperial concubines, wives, or royals were banished after falling out of the emperor’s favor or committing a serious offense.
The “Cold Palace” is not an official building. No single, permanent building in the Forbidden City or ancient imperial complexes in China was officially named the “Cold Palace.” Instead, the term referred to whichever remote room, courtyard, or forgotten corner the emperor assigned to house a disgraced person.
The “Cold Palace” is a social death sentence. The banishment stripped the individuals of their status, luxury, servants, and financial allowances. They lived in extreme isolation, often dealing with poor or rotting food, lack of heating/charcoal during freezing winters, physical neglect, and psychological breakdown.
Once sent to the “Cold Palace”, recovery of status or release was exceedingly rare; many spent the rest of their lives there or faced execution. In this drama, you see Lu Yunluo finally get out of the Cold Palace, which is impossible in real ancient life.

Review
What I Liked
Lu Yunluo, the sunny Female Lead
Thanks to the leading actress Xu Meng Yuan, she made Lu Yunluo very lovable. Pretty, smart, cheerful, and positive-thinking. Lu Yunluo doesn’t simply wait for the emperor to rescue her. She uses her modern knowledge and ingenuity to improve her circumstances. This makes her more entertaining than a heroine who constantly has to be rescued by the Male Lead.
I also have to correct the official synopsis, which mentions the Female Lead as an office worker. In fact, she is a lab worker or a scientist. She uses her scientific knowledge to invent the products needed for her business or save the nation.

Variety of business Lu Yunluo tried
Lu Yunluo is a very resourceful Female Lead of any business character I know because of the product diversification she tried. Yes, farming is the main business, since later she helps the Emperor with the national famine and harvest issues.
My favorite is the sanitary napkins she sells, which she calls Yunluo Pads. The Empress Dowager doesn’t know—and listen—that the sanitary napkins are not for wiping sweat!

Satisfying ending of a transmigration theme
Usually, Chinese dramas featuring time travel, transmigration, or rebirth end unsatisfactorily due to strict government censorship. China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) has long discouraged or restricted direct time-travel, transmigration, and reincarnation plotlines. Therefore, we always see that the protagonist dreams about the story, either while sleeping or in a coma.
In Farm Busily in the Cold Palace, Lu Yunluo doesn’t return to the modern time— for example, by waking up from a coma after the lab fire. If you’re curious about what actually happens at the end, you can take a look at the Spoilers Section. The way the production team chose to end the drama is quite interesting.
What I Disliked
Not a strong romance plot
Although Xu Meng Yuan and Zhang Hong Ming had good chemistry in this drama, there is no strong romance between Lu Yunluo and Ji Wujue. In my opinion, the modern “Lu Yunluo” doesn’t really have feelings for Ji Wujue because she is too busy with her business. However, her exceptional business raises the Emperor’s curiosity that he visits her often!

My Rating
I used my rating system with additional scores of:
- + 0.5 for the business plot
- + 0.5 for the ending
- + 1.0 for the Female Lead and Xu Meng Yuan’s acting
Total rating 8.0/10.
Conclusion
Farm Busily in the Cold Palace is more than just a story about time travel and palace romance—it is a delightful reminder that even when life takes an unexpected turn, courage, intelligence, and a positive attitude can open the door to new possibilities.
Sometimes, the warmest place isn’t where you are welcomed with open arms, but where you find the strength to plant your own seeds of happiness—and watch love bloom when you least expect it.

How does the drama end? [long answer]
Although Lu Yunluo loves the Emperor, she wants to escape the palace and expand her business outside. Ji Wujue grants her freedom, and she fakes her death. Some time later, she and her maid opened a business outside the Capital. Ji Wujue finds her again at a meeting with businesspeople. One of them carries a fan with “End of Season 1” written on it.
