Introduction
This is my first time watching a (modern) Hong Kong drama—I think I watched a few historical wuxia when I was little—for the Halloween vibe. And it’s a fun ride with its unusual combination of courtroom cases, ghosts, romance, and murder mystery!
In Hell Barrister, death is certainly not the end of the story. This Hong Kong drama takes an unusual approach by combining courtroom disputes, supernatural happenings, dark comedy, romance, and family drama. At the center is a lawyer who has more enemies than friends—even in the netherworld— and whose love for money has made her rather unpopular.
After an unexpected encounter with death, she is given another opportunity to live. But there is a catch: she must help the dead settle their unfinished business, especially those involving inheritance disputes.
What initially sounds like a quirky supernatural comedy gradually becomes a story about greed, regret, family ties, forgiveness, and the importance of appreciating people while they are still alive.
Let’s dive in!

Review
What I Liked
Story: An Unusual Premise
The biggest attraction of this drama is its unusual premise. Instead of the usual lawyer dramas filled with complicated legal arguments and courtroom battles, we get a lawyer who literally travels between the living world and the underworld.
I’m glad that this drama is a localized ViuTV production aimed primarily at Hong Kong and regional streaming audiences. Therefore, it bypassed the mainland’s strict NRTA review process, allowing it to freely explore dark supernatural underworld concepts, ghosts, and afterlife themes that are typically restricted on mainland Chinese television. Under mainland NRTA guidelines, modern stories featuring explicit reincarnation or active spirits are heavily restricted or banned to discourage “superstition” and promote realism. If a mainland C-drama wants to use these themes, it usually has to frame them within a historical xianxia (immortal fantasy) world, or write them off as a dream, a video game, or a sci-fi simulation.
Because Hong Kong faces no such creative barriers for its local broadcasts, I sincerely hope that Hong Kong makes more modern supernatural dramas like this!

The VIP reincarnation is not the only quirky thing found in this hell!
Message: Surprisingly Deep and Touching
Rather than having ordinary courtroom battles, Hell Barrister uses ghosts and inheritance disputes to explore human greed, family relationships, regret, forgiveness, love, and the importance of appreciating people while they are still alive.
Overall, the emotional resolution of the main plot, as well as the individual cases, gives the drama a meaningful conclusion.

Shi Song, Amber’s first netherworld client. Got what he wants, but with regret
Amber: Not a Typical Lovable Female Lead
Amber—aka Yau Yum Yum—is not your typical lovable female lead. She is clever, ambitious, sharp-tongued, money-minded, and often selfish. She believes almost everything can be settled with money or a business transaction. This makes her an interesting character because she is far from perfect.

Amber is dare enough to confront a hell deity
As Amber encounters different spirits and witnesses the ugly side of inheritance disputes, she gradually begins to understand that money cannot solve every problem. Some things, especially love, family, and regret, cannot be settled with a lawyer’s fee.
As Amber, Ashley Lin carries much of the drama on her shoulders. Her portrayal of a cold, tough, calculating lawyer who gradually discovers her softer side is one of the highlights. She manages to make Amber entertaining without making her completely unlikable.
The Quirky Hell Setting
For me, one of the most appealing aspects of this drama is its imaginative presentation of the netherworld.

Amber undergoes a judgment in hell
Rather than relying on the usual scary ghosts and traditional images of hell, the production creates a strange, surreal world with a distinctive visual style.
The mirror-inspired underworld, its unusual surroundings, and the humorous interactions among the netherworld characters give the series a fresh identity.
What I Disliked, or Could Be Better
Underdeveloped Romance
Hell Barrister is not promoted as a romance drama, yet, with a ‘boyfriend’ as hot as Ben, you hope for more romantic scenes between the two. I wrote ‘boyfriend’ with an apostrophe because their relationship is indeed interesting, but I don’t want to spoil you. Amber is someone who treats emotions almost like business transactions. She paid Ben to be her ‘boyfriend’. Watching her gradually become more emotionally involved with him creates opportunities for both comedy and tenderness.
Moreover, the romance between Amber and Ben provides a softer side to an otherwise dark story with a deep message. Therefore, although romance is not the genre of this drama, I think their relationship could have benefited from more development and emotional depth.

Limited Budget Production Value
Unlike Mainland Chinese dramas with their large budgets, sweeping locations, and high-production values, Hong Kong dramas—like Hell Barrister—have tighter studio budgets, fast-paced shooting schedules, and urban or indoor settings (such as police stations, hospitals, and family homes).
Although not quite at the level of a big-budget fantasy production, the hell setting uses elaborate mirror effects and reflective surfaces to create an unusual, almost science-fiction environment. Much of it was built as a physical set rather than relying entirely on green screens. Despite the effort, I think the netherworld should be better.

My Rating
I used my rating system with additional scores of:
- + 1.0 for the unusual premise
- + 0.5 for the deep message
- + 1.0 for the Amber characterization, and netherworld quirky characters
- + 0.5 for the quirky hell-setting
Total rating 9.0/10.

There is a bar in this hell
Conclusion
Hell Barrister is an interesting Hong Kong drama that dares to mix supernatural fantasy, dark comedy, legal disputes, and romance.
Its greatest strength is its originality. The idea of a lawyer working for the dead provides plenty of opportunities for unusual situations, humorous moments, and emotional storytelling.

It may not be a particularly outstanding legal drama, nor is its romance especially unforgettable. Nevertheless, the combination of an unconventional female lead, imaginative underworld settings, and stories about human nature makes it worth considering.
What I particularly like about its central message is that sometimes we need to look at life from the perspective of death before we truly understand how precious life is.
After all, money can settle an inheritance dispute, but it cannot bring back the people we have lost or undo the things we wish we had done differently.
