Themes and Messages
Themes
Phantom Lawyer explores themes of humanism, closure, and the pursuit of justice for those who have lost their voices.
Humanism: Rather than just solving legal problems, Sin I Rang focuses on comforting both the living and the dead, breathing new life into bereaved families trapped in sorrow.
Closure: The show also highlights the importance of resolving lingering grudges to allow the dead to move on.
Pursuit of justice: The narrative explores the idea that “the dead have no voice” but still deserve to have their truths uncovered and the ones who wronged them are punished.
Messages
Ok, I don’t want to mess with ghosts and tried to resolve their grudges. Non-spooky-wise, this drama encourages me to look past the surface to find hidden truths about something or perspectives on someone that have been overlooked. Being seen and heard is a fundamental human need.

Story and Plot
Story
The core premise follows Sin I Rang, albeit a lawyer, operates outside the traditional legal system. Rather than relying solely on courtroom procedures, he manipulates evidence, exploits loopholes, and outsmarts powerful elites to bring justice where the law fails.
While the lawyer protagonists make Phantom Lawyer a legal drama, the show also blends in comedy, mystery, and supernatural elements, with a sprinkle of romance.
Law: The legal cases are centered around Shin I Rang uncovering the truth behind his client’s deaths. Unlike many legal thrillers, there are few intense courtroom scenes. The focus is primarily on settlements and supernatural investigation.
Mystery: The mystery centers on uncovering the injustices behind the deaths of ghosts who can’t move on, such as a murdered ghost.
Comedy: The protagonist occasionally gets possessed by his ghostly clients, either because they are really happy or angry. The possessed Sin I Rang experiences their personality, creating comedic scenes.
Supernatural: Shin I Rang gains the ability to see and hear spirits after setting up his law practice in a former shaman’s house. He not only sees and hears them, but they occasionally possess him. These ghosts had tragic backstories. Shin I Rang helps them resolve their regrets and achieve justice.
Romance: The romance in this drama is not the main focus. It’s a slow-burning with an emotional subplot. The drama focuses heavily on legal fantasy, but the romance develops as Na Hyeon warms up to I-rang’s supernatural world.

Plot
The show follows a “ghost-of-the-week” structure (one case in two episodes), where each case centers on unresolved grievances of dead clients who cannot find peace due to unfair circumstances surrounding their deaths. It blends the emotional cases with shamanism and legal courtroom scenes.
The cases conveniently link to a law firm that represents clients who stand against I Rang’s ghost clients. Thus, in the middle of the drama, the plot shifts toward a larger conspiracy of the mastermind behind a long-buried case. The protagonist’s past is also gradually revealed.
The final arc is a full confrontation with the main antagonist.

Characterization and Acting
The strength of Phantom Lawyer isn’t just its concept. We have seen a lot of similar ghost tales, where protagonists help ghosts resolved their past grudges. The drama really lives on performance, especially of the leading actor Yoo Yeon Seok. The story depends on Sin I Rang’s subtle personality shifts, emotional restraint, and moral ambiguity rather than big plot twists.
Sin I Rang (Yoo Yeon-seok)
Sin I Rang are initially timid, clumsy, and struggling to find work. He is forced to take on ghost clients, and that turn of events reveals an unexpected and passionate dedication to justice.
Yoo Yeon Seok is a versatile actor. In this drama, he effortlessly changed between emotional, comedic, and professional tones, showcasing both awkward sincerity and intense dedication.
With different speech patterns, changes in posture and energy, and shifts in emotional tone, Yoo Yeon Seok essentially played multiple personalities! His acting really shines—each possession feels distinct rather than gimmicky.
Han Na Hyeon (Esom)
At first, Han Na Hyeon is an elite, cold, and calculated lawyer driven by a perfect winning record. Na Hyeon acts as the audience’s legal conscience and creates ethical tension by believing in legal procedure and questioning Sin I Rang’s methods. Her character arc moves from skepticism of the supernatural to uncovering hidden emotional wounds as she assists in solving the cases.
The chemistry between Yoo Yeon Seok and Esom drives the legal-fantasy blend, with additional emotional depth added by supporting characters, particularly I Rang’s mother.
Visualization
The visualization in Phantom Lawyer is not as dark or horror-heavy as other ghost dramas, but it’s very intentional and tied closely to the show’s tone: quirky, emotional, and slightly supernatural.
Cinematography
The cinematography is naturalistic, with character-focused framing. The show leans heavily on medium shots and close-ups, with soft lighting, especially in emotional scenes. This keeps the focus on performance and emotion, which fits the “ghost-of-the-week” storytelling. It’s not stylized like a horror drama, more grounded and personal.
Special Effects
The special effects are simple but purposeful. The ghost portrayal is not scary. In the introduction scene of every ghost. They slightly altered skin tone, lighting, or presence, with minimal CGI. The goal is emotional storytelling of their life, not jump scare.
When Sin I Rang was possessed and performed different personalities, Instead of heavy VFX, the show relies on Yoo Yeon Seok’s body language and facial expressions, with makeup tweaks (rosy cheeks).

My Rating
I used my rating system with additional scores of:
+0.5 for story and plot.
+1.0 for characterization and acting in general. I specifically love I Rang’s family, as depicted below.
+0.5 for Yoo Yeon Seok’s acting.
+0.5 for the visualization.
Total rating 8.5/10.

Conclusion
In my opinion, Phantom Lawyer isn’t really about law—it’s about power, control, and the cost of justice. It challenges the idea that legal systems are inherently fair and suggests that sometimes justice requires stepping outside the rules… by resolving the grievances of the dead!
