OSTs

Two OSTs are actually quite nice. The first one is the main/ending theme 回信一封 (“Reply to a Letter”) sung by Jerry Y. The second one is the insert song 落在光影里 (“Falling in the Light and Shadow”) sung by Cao Juntao (曹俊涛). This song is also the OST of the 2024 Chinese short drama Indulgence (染指).

Review

What I Liked About the Drama

The Romance

I liked the romance narrative because the chemistry between Hua Lian Xin and Zhao Hua Wei was amazing, both in the past and in the present timeline. The romance is written in two emotional layers — the tragic past-life romance because of the patriotic theme in the Republican Era and the intense present-day relationship.

In their past lives, Lin Shu Yi and Shen Gu shared a deep but tragic love story. Their relationship was pure and loyal, but they were torn apart by circumstances. This part of the story gives their connection a fated and emotional feeling, making viewers understand why they are drawn to each other again in the present.

In the current timeline, Xu Wan Xin and Shen Gu’s (same actor but different Shen Gu) relationship begins with business rivalries, hidden secrets, and family manipulation. However, the chemistry between them remains strong, and their love slowly develops from suspicion into trust and sacrifice. The present relationship is mature, passionate, and emotionally complicated.

Fast Pacing

Since episodes are only around 20 minutes, the story moves quickly without too much filler. Total binge is 9 hours and 20 minutes (28 episodes x 20 minutes).

The Visuals

The cinematography gives the drama a polished, cinematic feel. The lighting used is especially effective during nighttime scenes, using soft city glows and reflective visuals to enhance the romantic and mysterious tone. The production team seems care a lot about the visual effects. There are also a lot of aesthetically pleasing posters of the couple for promotion, a surprise considering this is a short drama with limited budget.

The modern costume styling matches the drama’s wealthy corporate setting. However, I prefer seeing the costume (with accessories, props, and sets) in the Republican Era setting.

The Hong Kong-inspired atmosphere is something that I rarely enjoy, since the settings in Chinese modern dramas are usually located in Mainland China and I don’t watch Hong Kong Dramas. But the harbor-city setting and stylish visuals add a more glamorous and slightly nostalgic tone.

What I Disliked or Didn’t Care About the Drama

The Business Plot

The mix of hostile corporate takeover battles, family betrayal, and contract marriage romance gives it a classic modern drama feel similar to wealthy-family melodramas. I don’t really like business dramas, so I usually fast forward or skip the business scenes.

The tropes

The drama relies heavily on familiar romance formulas: fake marriage, rich-family feuds, hidden past connections, and destiny themes. I really don’t care about these tropes. I watched it because Hua Lian Xin and Zhao Hua Wei looked so good together in many drama posters. Take it or leave it.

My Rating

I used my rating system with additional scores of:

+ 0.5 for the romance in the past and present timeline.

+ 1.0 for characterization. Besides the leads, I also like their friends, the grandfather, and the younger version of the grandfather. The child actor’s acting (as shown below) is excellent.

+ 1.0 for the visualization.

Total rating 8.5/10.

Conclusion

If you enjoy Chinese dramas filled with romance, family intrigues, corporate power struggles, and fated love that transcends past lives, Echoes of Gang City is definitely worth watching. It’s also a good entrance to Chinese short dramas or Republican Era dramas. With its stylish Hong Kong backdrop, emotional twists, and strong chemistry between the leads, the drama offers an entertaining blend of passion, mystery, and redemption.

Ending Spoilers

What is the ending? [short answer]

Happy ending for Shen Gu and Xu Wan Xin at the present time, sad ending for Shen Gu and Lin Shu Yi at the past.

How does it end? [long answer]

The corporate war was over at the present time. At the past, Shen Gu and Lin Shu Yi both died for patriotic sacrifice. There was an alternative ending at the end of the final episode, with a “what-if” scenario.
