Introduction

Turning Life Around is a short-form Chinese fantasy suspense drama that explores what happens when fate refuses to stay fixed. When an ordinary life collides with a mysterious chance to rewrite the past, buried secrets, shifting identities, and hidden power struggles begin to surface, pulling the characters into a cycle of revenge, redemption, and consequence.

Although this short drama is not a remake of the Korean drama The Golden Spoon (금수저), there are similarities in concept. For those who watched the Korean version and wanted to know the similarities/differences, there is a section about it after the Review section.

Review

What I Liked About the Drama

Story

It’s a dark revenge with a conspiracy tone. I like suspense mixed with fantasy. The suspense/revenge is the rich family conspiracy with a revenge angle. Emotional satisfaction is high, with suspenseful elements like power struggles, identity swaps, and revenge investigations.

Pacing

It’s fast-paced, with 30 episodes @15 minutes each, the plot moves quickly without too much filler, but there are many plot twists. The binge-watch takes about 7 1/2 hours.

Relationship Dynamics

The dual Male Lead setup is tense. Wang Rui Chang’s portrayal of the “ruthlessness after rising from the bottom” is very immersive; Cao En Qi, on the other hand, does a good job of depicting the fragility of a wealthy young man and his later growth. Their scenes together are more captivating than a simple love story between them and the female characters, Lin Si Qi and Jiang Lai.

What I Disliked or Didn’t Care About the Drama

Rushed Plot

Since it’s a short-form drama, I felt that character development is rushed, and emotional scenes are not too deep. The supporting character arcs are thin. Qi Yan Di’s character, Lin Si Qi, for example. Although she was supposedly the Female Lead, Lin Si Qi only truly enters the main storyline in the later parts, and her romantic subplot with Zhang Xiao Bei doesn’t have a particularly strong presence. It could have used more buildup if the drama pairs them up.

Plot Holes/Illogical Plot

The fantasy rules are also inconsistent, and the details are somewhat melodramatic and illogical. Some plot twists progress too quickly, and many things are resolved through coincidences. Compared to other stronger time-loop dramas, it feels more like an idol drama than a deep psychological thriller. Idol dramas act as a vehicle for commercial appeal, often placing style, fan service, and emotional relatability above complex or realistic storylines.

My Rating

I used my rating system with additional scores of:

+ 0.5 for the unique premise

+ 1.0 for Wang Rui Chang and Cao En Qi’s characterization and acting

+ 0.5 for the visualization.

Total rating 8.0/10.

Compare and Contrast with The Golden Spoon

The Golden Spoon (금수저)

Similarities

  • Both dramas use the same trope: If you could live someone else’s life, would it fix everything—or make things worse?
  • Both dramas use a magical golden spoon that lets the poor Male Lead swap lives with the rich Male Lead.

Differences

  • The Golden Spoon is more of a dark moral fable about greed and identity, while Turning Life Around leans more toward a fast-paced revenge and redemption short drama style.
  • The Golden Spoon remains supernatural, while in Turning Life Around, there’s a plot twist. You can read in the Ending Spoilers section below if you’re curious.
  • Between the two, The Golden Spoon is generally the darker and more psychologically heavy series.
  • Between the two, The Golden Spoon is generally more romantic in a traditional, emotional sense. Turning Life Around is more plot-driven and revenge-focused. Romance exists but is not the main engine of the plot.
The ending’s differences [major spoilers for both dramas]

The ending of The Golden Spoon is less satisfying but more impactful. It’s bittersweet and leans to tragedy. The ending of Turning Life Around is more satisfying. Because it’s a more revenge-driven structure, the protagonist’s problems get resolved and he gets closure.

Conclusion

Turning Life Around blends fantasy, revenge, and emotional redemption into a fast-paced short drama that keeps viewers hooked. With strong chemistry between Wang Rui Chang and Cao En Qi, the series delivers suspenseful twists, family conspiracies, and heartfelt moments in every episode. Despite its short runtime, the drama manages to leave a lasting emotional impact.

Ending Spoilers

What is the ending?

Happy ending

How is the ending?

The mastermind’s plan is revealed. The truth about Zhang Xiao Bei’s victimization finally came to light. He and Sheng Yuan Zhou join forces to complete their revenge.

They return to their original life. At the end, it’s shown Sheng Yuan Zhou turns in his novel to the writing contest and states that he got the idea about the Spoon of Fate. This scene satisfies the NRTA requirement that the supernatural event happens in the drama is just his fiction.
