Introduction
What happens when an emperor and empress who can barely stand each other wake up in each other’s bodies? Pure chaos—and surprisingly, a charming romance in recent Chinese short dramas. No Doubt in Us takes a familiar body-swap concept and elevates it with witty humor, heartfelt character growth, and a refreshing love story built on understanding rather than destiny. Beneath the comedic mishaps and palace shenanigans lies a touching reminder that sometimes the only way to truly know someone is to walk in their shoes—or in this case, live in their body.

Synopsis
The civil-minded Emperor, a man of letters who despises martial arts, and his warrior Empress, a woman of the blade, have nothing but mutual disdain and deep distrust for each other until a freak accident swaps their bodies. Forced to accept their bizarre new reality, the two must walk in the other’s skin. As they play each other’s roles, misunderstandings unravel, and something unexpected takes root: love and trust. Trapped in the Empress’s body, the Emperor endures the cold mockery of the concubines and the Empress Dowager, and suffers through the schemes and traps laid for an unloved queen. Review
What I Like About the Drama
Lighthearted
It’s a romcom. It’s also a very easy, bingeable watch. The pacing is light, the tone stays mostly comedic, and there’s little emotional exhaustion compared to heavier palace dramas. Although there are some dramatic moments, It doesn’t have particularly heart-wrenching scenes, nor does it go crazy with melodramatic misunderstandings. Overall, No Doubt in Us is perfect for viewers who want something fun and relaxing.

Sweet Romance with Character Developments
Although there are plenty of jokes, the romance and character developments are not abrupt. After Xiao Jin Yu and Xu Yu start to truly trust each other, the sweetness noticeably increases, making the romance plot very enjoyable to watch.
Some various scenes after the body swap in the early stage are hilarious – the emperor is forced to face the harem’s competition for favor and court etiquette, while the empress begins to attend court and handle state affairs. The two gradually go from disliking each other to trusting each other. This emotional arc, from misunderstanding to mutual understanding, is the most moving part of the entire drama.

The leading actor and the leading actress’s performance
Dai Gaozheng and He Xuanlin’s performance was a pleasant surprise. The most difficult part of acting out a soul swap is to avoid being too exaggerated, but they made obvious distinctions in their movements, tones, and small expressions, successfully portraying the feeling that the body is oneself, but the soul is the other. The small details of imitating each other’s speech and habits after the swap are very immersive. Their chemistry exceeds expectations. Both are good kissers in their prior dramas, so we see good, real kissing scenes in this drama!

What I Dislike or Don’t Care About the Drama
Weak Political Plot
Because it is a short drama, some of the plot development is a bit fast. Specifically, the power struggle lines are not deep enough. I don’t care much about palace politics, specifically in short dramas. Viewers who like particularly complex palace intrigue with a grand scale might find No Doubt in Us political lot a bit simple.
2-Dimensional Supporting Characters
Because the main focus is the main couple’s arc, the supporting characters are not particularly well-developed. Some villains later get character growth and become supportive of the couple. However, their character development happens too quickly. Other villains are just created for the sake of being villains. Particularly, one villain, who is obsessed with the Female Lead, just for a handkerchief!
My favorite supporting characters below, Queen Hu Na and Prince Jin Ming.

Empress Xu Yu and Queen Hu Na, side-by-side in a sword dance

Imperial Diviner Xu and Prince Jin Ming
My Rating
I used my rating system with additional scores of:
+ 0.5 for the romance plot
+ 1.0 for the characters and acting
+ 0.5 for the visualization.
Compared to big-budget palace dramas, the production scale is relatively modest. However, the costume design and color palette are one of its strongest visual points. The imperial robes, palace uniforms, and empress attire are all polished and visually pleasing, giving the drama a warm, slightly romanticized feel of the royal court.
Total rating 8.0/10.

Conclusion
Packed with laugh-out-loud moments, palace mishaps, and unexpected heart, No Doubt in Us transforms a classic body-swap premise into a charming romance about understanding the person on the other side of the throne.
Spoilers
Why did the Emperor and the Empress not get along? [medium spoiler]
Misunderstandings. They had known each other since childhood, and although I cannot say they were childhood sweethearts, they liked each other. They got married based on the usual palace’s political situation. Her family holds military power, so they’re married off to secure the throne’s position. However, the Emperor has been wary of this power, thanks to the influence of his family and ministers. Although he liked his Empress, he intentionally distanced himself from her. His cold behavior made her despise him, and everyone thought she was unfavored by the Emperor. These misunderstandings are cleared up during the body switch.
What is the ending? [short answer]
Happy ending.
How does it end? [long answer]
Their political enemies are defeated, and other villains (Empress Dowager, the concubines) become their allies. The concubines are freed to return to their families, or they are employed as court officials.
