Introduction
What would you do if you were given a second chance—not to relive your life or revenge, but to uncover the truth behind a web of secrets, betrayals, and hidden agendas? Reborn Rookie takes this intriguing premise and turns it into a fast-paced drama filled with mystery, suspense, and high-stakes power struggles. While the series blends fantasy, corporate intrigue, and family drama, its greatest strength lies in its ability to keep viewers guessing. Each episode reveals new clues, unexpected twists, and shifting alliances that make it difficult to stop watching. With strong performances, engaging storytelling, and plenty of cliffhangers, Reborn Rookie delivers an entertaining ride that keeps audiences invested from beginning to end.
The phrase “looking down from the bottom” is a metaphor to describe the protagonist’s perspective of being in a low, disadvantaged, or challenging position, while still maintaining the ambition and mental clarity to observe the bigger picture.

Synopsis
The lives of Choiseong Group chairman Kang Yong Ho and newly-signed Choiseong FC soccer player Hwang Jun Hyeon are forever intertwined when Jae Seong, the chairman’s son, hits Jun Hyeon with his father’s car while trying to cover up evidence of his and his twin sister Jae Gyeong’s embezzlement. The subsequent injury ends Jun Hyeon’s soccer career before it starts, and he’s expected to pay back a 400 million won penalty fee. Furious, he confronts the chairman, but in a horrific twist, both of them end up falling down the stairs – and when Chairman Kang wakes up, he’s inhabiting Jun Hyeon’s body. Faced with this unprecedented situation, the chairman decides to shake up the company and expose his children’s misdeeds by posing as a genius new employee, with help from Bang Geul, his youngest daughter. Relationship Chart
I won’t list the supporting characters, as there is an English-translated relationship chart below that breaks down the relationship between the main characters and the supporting characters.

It’s Not a Romance
Before I start reviewing, I want to clarify that this drama is NOT a romance genre.
Despite some viewers speculating about a possible romance—for example, from the drama poster—Reborn Rookie is NOT a romance drama. The story’s primary focus is on mystery, family dynamics, corporate intrigue, and personal growth rather than romantic relationships. While Kang Bang Geul develops confusing and conflicted feelings toward “Hwang Jun Hyeon”, the drama treats these emotions as part of her emotional journey and the unusual circumstances surrounding the story, not as the foundation of a romantic plot.
The reborn Kang Yong Ho never approached Kang Bang Geul as his peer or someone his age. His caring attitude is because she is his daughter, with guidance, protection, and unconditional nurturing. If he shows any love that is towards his wife, Cho Sun Hui.

Review
Story and Plot
Story
Fantasy
At its heart, Reborn Rookie uses a second-chance fantasy premise to drive a layered corporate and family mystery. Kang Yong Ho’s unusual situation—a “rebirth”-type setup—which functions as a narrative device of what appeared to happen vs. what actually happened.
Mystery
That being said, the story controls information release. Instead of solving one central mystery quickly, it builds multiple overlapping questions. Each episode typically ends by expanding the mystery rather than resolving it, which sustains long-term engagement.
Business
The conflict is not just “good vs evil” but inheritance battles, corporate control struggles, and family loyalty vs personal ambition. These elements create layered conflicts where characters are rarely right or wrong. Even antagonistic actions are often motivated by survival, greed, or fear of losing status.
Comedy
One of Reborn Rookie‘s most pleasant surprises is its humor. Despite the drama’s heavy themes of betrayal, corporate power struggles, and hidden secrets, it frequently lightens the mood with well-timed comedic moments.
The ending cameo is funny and balances the suspense and emotional tension in previous scenes. If you’re curious, the spoiler is at the end of the article.

Plot
The plot structure follows a classic three-layer structure:
- Kang Yong Ho’s adaptation to his new circumstances.
- Revelation of past events with hidden motives, secret alliances, and secrets.
- The power struggle.
The plot advances through character decisions, in which alliances shift frequently, trust is constantly tested, and hidden agendas are revealed through dialogue and timing.
The plot is fast-paced. Reborn Rookie is designed for high bingeability, with frequent cliffhangers and rapid escalation of conflicts. This makes the narrative feel momentum-driven rather than slow-burning.

Characterization and Acting
Characterization
One of Reborn Rookie‘s greatest strengths is its cast of characters. While the plot is driven by mystery and corporate intrigue, the emotional investment comes from watching the characters navigate ambition, loyalty, family obligations, and personal growth.
Kang Yong Ho, before his rebirth, was a businessman who successfully brought the Choiseong Group, which he founded, to the Top 10 in the South Korean business world. Believing that money can solve everything, he earned the title of “God of Business”.
The reborn Kang Yong Ho is the heart of the drama. What makes him compelling is that he isn’t simply trying to win; he’s trying to understand what went wrong and how to avoid repeating past mistakes. Throughout the series, he demonstrates intelligence, adaptability, resilience, and character growth.
His second daughter, Kang Bang Geul, provides much of the emotional grounding in the story. With her love towards her mother and father (even though they sent her overseas since high school), she serves as a source of warmth and support amid the chaos surrounding the main plot.
Kang Yong Ho’s twins, Kang Jae Gyeong and Kang Jae Sung, are the products of their father’s rearing, because Kang Yong Ho forces his twin children to compete with him. They contribute significantly to the drama’s atmosphere of suspicion and intrigue with hidden agendas, personal ambition, family tensions, and internal conflicts.

Acting
The success of Reborn Rookie relies heavily on its cast’s ability to balance mystery, suspense, family drama, comedy, and emotional moments. Fortunately, the actors largely rise to the challenge, delivering performances that help elevate the material beyond its familiar genre tropes.
Lee Jun Young delivers the standout performance of the series. Although I don’t watch many K-dramas, I noticed his excellent performance in May I Help You and Weak Hero Class 2 with two opposite characters. As the central character, Lee Jun Young carries much of the drama’s emotional and narrative weight, and he does so with confidence and charisma. His performance shines in emotional scenes that portray both vulnerability and determination. Perhaps most impressive is his ability to transition smoothly between lighter moments and high-stakes confrontations without making the character feel inconsistent.
I have never seen Lee Joo Myung before, so I don’t have any comment on her acting. Although the script sometimes gives her less to do than Lee Jun Young, even the actors who play villains, Lee Joo Myung makes the most of her screen time and leaves a positive impression.
I won’t spoil who plays villains, but the actors and actresses successfully portray characters whose smiles and polite words conceal ulterior motives. As antagonists, they play an essential role in maintaining the drama’s suspense.

Visualization
While Reborn Rookie is primarily driven by its story and performances, its visual presentation plays a major role in creating suspense and enhancing the viewing experience. The drama’s polished cinematography, carefully chosen settings, and atmospheric lighting help reinforce its themes of power, secrecy, and second chances.
Cinematography
The cinematography effectively supports the drama’s shifting moods. During tense or mysterious scenes, the camera emphasizes suspicious glances, subtle reactions, physical distance, and visual clues. The camera helps viewers focus on character emotions and important plot developments without feeling overly flashy.
Editing
The editing is one of the drama’s understated strengths. The drama maintains momentum through well-timed reveals, effective use of reaction shots, smooth transitions, and cliffhanger endings. The editing helps keep the narrative easy to follow despite multiple characters, secrets, and interconnected plot threads.
Costumes
Costumes are used effectively to define character identity and status. I really like the professional costumes with sharp business attire and elegant formal wear. They are curated wardrobes that reflect wealth and authority.
Sets
The drama makes excellent use of its locations. Corporate offices, boardrooms, luxury homes, and private meeting spaces are designed to reflect wealth, power, competition, and control. These contrast with Hwang Jun Hyeon’s and his grandma’s humble homes. These environments are not merely backgrounds; they help communicate the stakes of the story and the influence certain characters wield.

My Rating
I used my rating system with additional scores of:
- + 1.0 for the unique rebirth-type setup
- + 0.5 for the ending and how they make the bizarre body-swapping make sense (plus the funny cameo!)
- + 1.0 for the characterization and acting, especially Lee Jun Young as Kang Yong Ho
- + 0.5 for the visual design
Total rating 9.0/10.
Conclusion
Reborn Rookie succeeds as an engaging blend of mystery, suspense, corporate intrigue, and emotional drama. While its premise may draw viewers in, it is the strong performances, well-paced storytelling, and compelling character journeys that keep them invested. The series delivers plenty of twists, betrayals, and high-stakes confrontations without losing sight of its emotional core.
Although some plot developments and villains follow familiar genre conventions, the drama’s strengths far outweigh its shortcomings. With its addictive suspense, memorable characters, and satisfying character growth, Reborn Rookie proves that a second-chance story can still feel fresh, exciting, and thoroughly entertaining.

Spoilers
What is the ending? [short answer]
Wholesome happy ending
How does it end? [long answer]
There is a 2-year time jump. Kang Yong Ho stepped down as the chairman. He is the VVIP for the Choiseong football club where Hwang Jun Hyeon is the coach. Lee Sang Jae is promoted to President. Park Bong Gi is promoted to Managing Director. Cho Sun Hui has a cooking livestream. Kang Bang Geul is the Team Leader at Choiseong, but also the boss in Taeha Group, which she acquired last time. She and Hwang Jun Hyeon were dating secretly behind Kang Yong Ho. Hwang Jun Hyeon fell for Kang Bang Geul every time she visited her father at the hospital. Although he was in a coma, his senses still worked normally and knew Kang Bang Geul was a kind person.
All villains got their punishments. Kang Jae Seong confessed to the hit-and-run and was imprisoned. After his release, he moved to the US with the children. Kang Jae Gyeong became crazy; her mental status erased her identity. The only one she remembered was her husband. Na Byeong Mo and Na Eun Se were imprisoned.

Did Kang Yong Ho and Hwang Jun Hyeon return to their bodies?
Yes, in the final episode. “Kang Yong Ho” was hit on the head by the villain’s men. When he passed out, Kang Yong Ho and Hwang Jun Hyeon swapped bodies. Kang Yong Ho woke up in his original body and rushed to save Hwang Jun Hyeon.
What’s up with the ending cameo?
Kang Yong Ho saw Hwang Jun Hyeon and Kang Bang Geul together and wanted to chase them. Hwang Jun Hyeon saw him walking towards them, not seeing the celebrity Shin Ryu Jin—a singer, dancer, and member of girls’ group ITZY—who was walking straight towards him. Hwang Jun Hyeon wanted to avoid his future father-in-law to collide with Ryu Jin. He ended up bumping into Ryu Jin, and their bodies swapped hilariously.
