The native Chinese title of the drama Key to the Phoenix Heart is Que Gu (雀骨), which literally translates to “Sparrow Bone.”

The Phoenix Heart Token is basically the drama’s biggest MacGuffin—the object everyone is chasing because it holds the key to power, secrets, and the truth behind several major mysteries. It isn’t just a symbol; it’s tied directly to the fate of the kingdom and multiple characters’ motivations.

The Phoenix Heart Tokens originally came from Empress Wenxi’s Phoenix Imperial Seal. Empress Wenxi is a key historical figure from the previous dynasty. She had her Phoenix Imperial Seal melted down and recast into four Phoenix Heart Tokens. These tokens represent the legitimacy of the former royal family. Whoever controls the complete set has a claim to the previous dynasty’s legacy.

Each of the four tokens was entrusted to a different loyal person or bloodline.

The Phoenix Head Token is the most important token that can command the other three below. It’s owned by Xiao Wuyi.

Princess Yunzhao’s Token. After Li Lejun steals it and the truth is exposed, the Empress Dowager returns it to Xie Jiayu (Princess Yunzhao’s adoptive daughter) to encourage the remaining token holders to reveal themselves.

Prince Jing’an’s Token. Xiao Wuyi inherits and safeguards this token as Prince Jing’an’s heir.

Cui Family Token. Originally owned by the real Cui Jun, the fake Cui Jun (Chu Zhu) possessed it for years, but after his defeat, it ended up in Xiao Wuyi’s hands.

The tokens are actually a map/key system. Each token contains part of the secret that leads to the location of valuable mineral resources. The mines can provide materials needed to make weapons. Whoever controls them controls a huge advantage in war and politics.

The real Cui Jun was the one who actually created the mineral deposit map. He discovered a massive network of mineral deposits. He mapped these valuable secret resources with coordinates, gave them map to Empress Wenxi, and she hid the coordinates within the Phoenix Heart Tokens. Because these tokens reveal the location of the raw materials needed to forge weapons and fund a military, they became tied to the rightful imperial heir and ultimate political power.

Xie Jiayu cracks the secret of the tokens. Eventually, the newly discovered mineral resources are used accelerate weapon manufacturing, giving the military the ultimate advantage to defeat the invading Northern Qin forces swiftly.

Xiao Wuyi deliberately destroys the Phoenix Heart Token, to show Li Mao, the Regent, and the imperial court that he has absolutely no intention of claiming the throne. As a romantic gesture, he has the remaining scraps of the destroyed artifact recast into a hairpin for Xie Jiayu.

Xiao Wuyi told Li Mao that Xie Jiayu memorized the location of the mineral deposits. This is Xiao Wuyi’s strategy, that no matter happens, the court is forced to protect her.

At the end, after Li Mao became the emperor, Xie Jiayu gave the map to him.

The romance between Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu is basically a slow-burn, enemies-to-allies-to-lovers relationship. It grows because they are forced to trust each other while surrounded by secrets and betrayal.

For Xiao Wuyi:

He faces heavy injuries from the previous battle and severe court pressure from opposing factions. By declining standard military rewards and demanding a marriage decree instead, he shifts the court’s focus, outmaneuvers rivals like the Prince of Changsha, who wants to marry Xie Jiayu, and gives himself a reason to stay in the Capital rather than returning immediately to the dangerous northern border.

Moreover, Xiao Wuyi deduces that Xie Jiayu is actually the elusive, brilliant weapon designer known as the “Young Master of Miraculous Craft”. Requesting the marriage edict allows him to legally tie her to him so he can investigate her skills, uncover hidden weapons, and keep her close.

For Empress Dowager (who grants the marriage):

By marrying the military powerhouse (Xiao Wuyi) to the daughter of the prominent civil official (Grand Tutor Xie Huaigui), the Empress Dowager views it as a way to bind and pit competing political factions against each other.

For Grand Tutor Xie Huaigui (Xie Jiayu’s father):

Grand Tutor Xie Huaigui forces his daughter Xie Jiayu to proceed with the marriage to Xiao Wuyi because she is the central pawn in his grand master plan to flip the imperial chessboard.

The drama features a major, unconventional love triangle between Xiao Wuyi, Xie Jiayu, and Li Mao. Before the drama begins, Xie Jiayu and Li Mao are childhood sweethearts who shared an enduring, long-standing promise to be together.

When Xiao Wuyi asked for the imperial decree from the Empress Dowager to marry Xie Jiayu into a political marriage, he initially had no idea that she and his best friend, Li Mao, were a couple.

Once Xiao Wuyi discovers the truth, he remarkably behaves as a healthy and patient love rival. He gives Xie Jiayu hidden maps and secret escape passages, leaving her free to choose her own future and run away with Li Mao if she desires.

Despite Li Mao and Xie Jiayu’s past relationship, the triangle shifts permanently as the characters undergo political transformations. As Li Mao ascends to power as the Regent, he becomes heavily entangled in court conspiracies. Xie Jiayu ultimately realizes that Li Mao becomes ambitious and no longer has the innocent ideals they shared as children. Through shared life-and-death court struggles, mutual protection, and intellectual alignment over military mechanics, Xie Jiayu evetually falls for Xiao Wuyi’s sincerity, emotional maturity, and respect for her freedom.

Li Mao officially let her go by requesting the Emperor’s edict to confer Xie Jiayu with the title of Heir’s Consort in Episode 21 (after Xiao Wuyi and He Yuanji’s divorce).

Yes. However, Xiao Wuyi was single, and his “harem” was actually a cover story built for political survival and humanitarian reasons. He intentionally maintained this scandalous reputation so that the Empress Dowager and other political enemies would view him as an unprincipled, distracted playboy. This caused them to lower their guard and underestimate his military moves.

Xie Jiayu is Xiao Wuyi’s first and only true love, and his only real wife. I will explain about He Yuanji (first wife), Yu Ruisheng (concubine), and Xiao Ziqi (child) in the Secret/Real Identities Section.

No, there are absolutely no kissing scenes between Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu, only forehead kisses. During the filming of the series, lead actress Ai Mi was a minor (17 years old).

Yes. In Episode 28. In the final battle, Xiao Wuyi suffered a near-fatal injury on the battlefield. Li Mao and Xiao Yao hid him away, and he was treated by a miraculous doctor. Xiao Wuyi survived, but he lost his martial arts skills and suffered from temporary memory loss. After three-year time jump, he reunited with Xie Jiayu.

Crown Prince Wenxi, the heir of Emperor and Empress Wenxi. His childhood name is Xiao Sheng, but he changed it to Xiao Wuyi when he joined the military.

The name Wuyi (无衣) literally translates to “no clothes” or “without garments,” derived symbolically from the ancient Classic of Poetry (Shi Jing) patriotic war song Qin Feng: Wu Yi (“How do you say we have no clothes? Long strips for your-long-gown”), which evokes a soldier rallying to share armor, face common peril, and march to war together.

In the drama, he becomes the Heir of Prince Jing’an, his adoptive father, instead of the real son, Xiao Yu. From the outside, this is a decision made because Xiao Yu is disabled. However, placing Xiao Wuyi as the heir of Prince Jing’an was a tactical move by his adoptive parents. As the second in command of the Beifu Army, he becomes a big target of the enemies. Xiao Wuyi proves himself to be an exceptionally brilliant, ruthless, and capable leader of the family’s military forces

She’s adopted by Grand Tutor Xie and Li Fuhua/Princess Yunzhao. The drama doesn’t tell us her parents, only that she’s an orphan.

As a Li, he is Prince Qi. The late Prince Qi is the biological brother of Emperor Wenxi. However, it turned out he is an illegitimate son of Grand Tutor Xie with Consort An, Emperor Wenxi’s concubine. However, he has another identity, which I will reveal in Post Credit Scene.

On paper, He Yuanji is Xiao Wuyi’s first wife. She is Empress Dowager He’s niece. He Yuanji already had a lover, a commoner scholar named Pei Runheng. However, her aunt and the He family married her off to Xiao Wuyi for a political alliance. When Xiao Wuyi knew about it, he tried to find Pei Runheng to inform him that the marriage was only political, and he would find a way for the lovebirds to reunite. However, he found the scholar late; the Empress Dowager already killed Pei Runheng and his family.

Yu Ruisheng is a highly skilled military doctor and the wife of the late Duan Ying, a Lieutenant General in the Beifu Army directly under the male lead, Xiao Wuyi. He died heroically while defending a city from enemy forces. Rui Sheng was pregnant with Duan Ying’s child when she was captured by the enemy. Her husband’s family accused her of having an illegitimate child and that she had to be burned alive along with Duan Ying as per the culture. Xiao Wuyi rescued her by claiming that he forced her and that the child is his. He named the child Xiao Ziqi. Yu Ruisheng lives at the Xiao Mansion to treat Xiao Wuyi’s illness, pretending that she was his concubine.

There was a real Cui Jun, who found the mineral deposit sites and hid the coordinates in the Phoenix Heart tokens. However, the Cui Jun in the present time is fake. His real name is Chu Zhu or Ashina Qi, a Northern Qin infiltrator. He killed the real Cui Jun.

Yuan Xiaolu is a master mechanic, inventor, and fortune teller. He is actually Mulian Ying, the last surviving member of the Mulian clan whom the Northern Qin Empress Dowager seeks.

He’s actually Pei Runheng, He Yuanji’s former lover. Pei Runheng survived the family massacre. However, he has amnesia. He doesn’t know his real name; therefore, he doesn’t know that He Yuanji was his lover, either.

Notably, Eunuch Feng An.

A Chan. She infiltrated Prince Jing’an Mansion to be Xiao Wuyi’s dancer, to cover up his real actions. Then she gets close to Li Mao and becomes his concubine.

In no particular order of appearance, neither the ranking of their villainous deeds:

From Great Ye: Grand Tutor Xie, Empress Dowager, Li Mao, Prince Changsha.

From Northern Qin: Empress Dowager Shao Yang, Mulian Yu (Prince Ying), Ashina Qi/Chu Zu.

The An-Lu Case is the big historical injustice from the past—20 years ago—that connects many of the drama’s major characters and biggest mysteries.

It started when the Emperor and Empress Wenxi wanted to change the old system. They believed Great Ye had become too controlled by powerful aristocratic clans and corrupt officials. Their goal was to strengthen the central court, reduce corruption, and make the government work more fairly.

The An and Lu families were connected to the reform movement that wanted to weaken the power of old aristocratic clans and corrupt officials. This threatened people who benefited from the old system. Eventually, the Wenxi reform movement collapsed because of the conspiracy around it. The An-Lu Case is part of the fallout from this struggle. Powerful figures manipulate accusations and events to destroy the people who supported Wenxi’s vision.

It is basically the drama’s “original sin” — almost every major conflict in the present time traces back to what happened in the An-Lu case, including the fight over the Phoenix Heart Tokens.

Yes, the An-Lu Case is cleared, proving the two clans were framed.

20 years ago, the An and Lu families invented a flood-control system using flexible bamboo cages filled with interlocking pebbles to stabilize riverbanks. Seeking to destroy their political power, the previous emperor framed this strategic design as a deliberate attempt to sabotage imperial waterways, executing the families for treason.

During the prestigious Spring Exam in the present time, He Yuanji disguises herself as a male scholar, submits a brilliant paper resurrecting this forbidden bamboo-and-pebble engineering method. Her practical solution earns her the title of top-grade scholar, forcing the court to publicly address the design.

At the official scholar appointment ceremony, Xie Jiayu presented a working mechanical model to the court, visually proving that the bamboo-and-pebble method safely controls water rather than destroying it. With the engineering logic proven sound, the original treason evidence completely collapses. As the Regent, Li Mao issued an official imperial edict to fully clear the names of the wrongfully executed families.

Unfortunately, even though the truth is revealed, the An and Lu families cannot be brought back. The whole families were annihilated back then; no one survived.

In Chinese Wuxia and historical lore, Mohist techniques ((Mo Jia Ji Guan Shu / 墨家机关术) represent highly advanced, ancient engineering focused on complex wooden machinery, defensive structures, and interlocking puzzles.

Xie Huaigui, Xie Jiayu’s adoptive father, actively permits and encourages her to study the complex, unladylike Mohist mechanical arts. By validating her unique talents, Xie Huaigui builds an absolute, unbreakable sense of filial devotion in Xie Jiayu.

He allowed Xie Jiayu to study Mohist engineering because he wanted to use her skills later to decipher encrypted imperial secrets.

Overall happy ending.

After the last battle with Northern Qin at the Dingfeng Slope, Xiao Wuyi is presumed dead. Xie Jiayu mourned him for three years at the border, while building the community post-war. She then return to the Capital. Xie Jiayu crosses paths with a masked imperial guard commander two times. She went to her old shop, managed by her former maidservant, Nanxing, to steal some travel money. She discovers the drawing of Xiao Wuyi’s sword.

Xie Jiayu then storms the palace to confront Li Mao, now the Emperor, to demand information about Xiao Wuyi. Li Mao reveals that Xiao Wuyi survived with severe injury. He was saved but lost his memory. To keep him safe, he was given a new identity as an imperial guard.

The memories of Xiao Wuyi begin to return when he sees the red ribbon left by Xie Jiayu on the wishing tree. With his memory recovered, he uses a drum during the festival to play a rhythm known only to the two of them. Xie Jiayu recognizes the sound, runs through the crowd, and the two finally reunite.

In the final episode, he ascended to be the Emperor. The previous Emperor had already been sick and acknowledged Xiao Wuyi as the true heir of the throne. With Xiao Wuyi’s decline of the throne, Li Mao is the successor.

After killing Li Fuhua, Xie Jiayu’s mother, as punishment, Li Lejun offers herself to be a spy for the Great Ye by becoming Mu Lianyu’s woman in Northern Qin. In Episode 26, she is caught in a complex ruse orchestrated to trick Northern Qin. To make the deadly deception convincing, Xiao Wuyi shoots and kills Li Lejun with his bow and arrow. However, Li Lejun had been dying because she had drunk a fatal poison before the shot. She also asked Xiao Wuyi to kill her. When Li Mao found her, she told him that she had used her death to atone for her sins (killing Li Fuhua and other misdeeds). Later, during the autopsy, the poison in her body is confirmed.

Xiao Wuyi gave He Yuanji her Divorce Agreement long before Episode 19, though they parted ways functionally in Episode 21. After Xiao Wuyi provided the divorce papers, He Yuanji officially moved out of the Prince Jing’an Mansion to assume her role as the new head of the He family. Xiao Wuyi promised her that her courtyard would always be kept for her and that she would remain a lifelong teacher to Xiao Ziqi. Princess Jing’an (Xiao Wuyi’s adopted mother), appointed He Yuanji as her goddaughter.

He Yuanji takes the Spring Examination as He Yuan and scores as the top scholar. This achievement earns her an official academic title and a coveted opportunity to serve as a court official. Her new identity is Ms. He, and she dedicates her life to public service, teaching and recruiting scholars for the Great Ye. In the end, Xie Jiayu saw her opening a bookstore for the impoverished scholars.

In the final episode, Xie Jiayu sees her consulting patients. It’s assumed that when Xiao Wuyi is presumed dead, as his concubine, she is free to go with her son Ziqi, and is no longer bound to the Prince Jing’an Mansion.

In Episode 23, after the long-standing An-Lu case is finally exposed as a wrongful injustice, Xie Huaigui pleads guilty to his involvement of the execution of the An and Lu families. Instead of facing execution, Li Mao permits him to resign and retire to his hometown. In Episode 24, he was killed by a Northern Qin spy disguised as Xiao Ju, Xiao Wuyi’s father, before he left the Capital.

Li Leyun killed her in Episode 16 by tampering with Li Fuhua’s carriage, causing it to plummet off a cliff and killing the princess. Li Lejun learns that his brother does not actually carry the Ye imperial bloodline. Li Fuhua figures out this secret and also discovers that Crown Prince Wenxi is still alive. Knowing that Li Fuhua is on the verge of exposing the truth, Li Lejun decides to kill Li Fuhua, or her brother will lose everything and face execution for treason.

Died during the Battle of Dingfeng Slope.

Initially disabled from a battle, Xie Jiayu designs specialized stable stirrups for him to overcome his disability. He then won a high-stakes martial tournament against Mu Lianyu of Northern Qin. Xiao Yu return directly to the battlefield to fight for the Great Ye.

After their father’s death and Xiao Wuyi’s presumed death, Xiao Yu becomes the Second Prince of Jiang’an and leads the Beifu Army. However, he doesn’t get together with He Yuanji. In Episode 21, He Yuanji rejects his confession, as she chooses her personal dreams and independence over marriage (after her divorce from Xiao Wuyi).

In Episode 27, Xiao Wuyi killed him at the Dingfeng Slope battle.

In Episode 20, it was revealed that she was the mastermind who ordered the poisoning of three imperial princes years prior. She even poisoned her own son, the current Emperor, so he could convincingly ascend the throne as a compromised puppet ruler. In the end, the Emperor banished his own mother to a secluded palace. She suffers a stroke that leaves her paralyzed.

She dies of a terminal illness shortly after returning to Northern Qin in Episode 15.

In Episode 16, to save Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu, Yuan Xiaoliu sacrificed himself to dismantle the traps set by the fake Cui Jun.

Liu Zhaolin and other scholars were guilty of forging the Xiao Family’s signatures under the order of Grand Tutor Xie. When Grand Tutor Xie sent assassins to eliminate him, He Yuanji rescued him. To make amends, Liu Zhaolin bravely turns himself in to the authorities to take the blame and exonerate the falsely accused Xiao family. His crimes were pardoned due to his critical confession and redemptive actions. He left the Capital without his memories recovered and didn’t reunite with He Yuanji as lovers.

While relaxing in their seclusion, Xiao Wuyi reveals to Xie Jiayu that Li Mao is actually a real Prince Qi, not the illegitimate son of Grand Tutor Xie and Consort An. Back then, the wet nurse supposedly swapped Prince Qi’s son and the Grand Tutor’s son. The wet nurse was then killed by the Grand Tutor to keep the secret. However, her husband later reveals to Xiao Wuyi that there was never a swap. The Grand Tutor’s son was weak and died. The wet nurse was too afraid to tell the Grand Tutor that his son died. All along, Xie Huai Gui had lived with a lie that Li Mao was his son.

When Xie Jiayu wonders if they should tell Li Mao about it, Xiao Wuyi thinks it doesn’t matter anymore. Li Mao has become the Emperor. He is a legitimate heir to the throne. Li Mao is the son of Prince Qi from his concubine.

That makes Li Mao and Xiao Wuyi not only sworn brothers and best friends but also blood-related cousins (Emperor Wenxi and Prince Qi are brothers).
