Drama Recap Episodes 17 to 26
Episode 17
Ling Ying tricks You Huang into seeing her mother. At first, he refuses, but she obtains a royal order to include him as her assistant to investigate the missing Lord Xin An, who has been missing for several years. The paper demon from Underground City may be related to the case. They can only follow the lead to one person to ask about Lord Xin An, who is none other than her mother, heh!
Ban Xia decides to use the service of the new demon hunter Jiang Shang Yun, but she doesn’t tell Xuan Ye. Xuan Ye decides to go to the Underworld City to accompany Ban Xia, but she has gone with her maid. Oh, no, I’m afraid this may cause an issue in their relationship! Her entourage arrives first, but the demon hunters don’t let her go with them. Xuan Ye and Chi Xue arrive later and are quickly approached by people of interest. First, Lyu Cun Mian, who stares at Xuan Ye’s sword. He claims that he runs a small business, but he then reports to his mysterious master. Second, Song Qi, who claims that he’s a local guide. When Xuan Ye checks his identity, he turns out to be a Fish Demon. He’s eyeing the bundle Chi Xue holds tightly, which turns out to be radishes, lol!
A lot of things happen in the Underground City. Two swordsmen, Xiang Shan and Xiang Feng, are looking for Lord Xin An, the missing nobleman whom Ling Ying and You Huang are also looking for. Yay, this bickering couple is also in Underground City, paying local guides good deposits to search for Lord Xin An. Meanwhile, Ban Xia and Ting Zhou feel that the demon hunters are only interested in Ganshan Clinic, and once they say (lie) that they don’t really know Physician Jiu and others, the demon hunters are less enthusiastic. Therefore, Ban Xia and Ting Zhou decide to search for the bookstore themselves. Ling Ying and You Huang get their leads fast from the local guide Song Qi, who directs them to a renowned physician, Huang Fu Bai, who treated the nobleman 2 years ago. According to him, the patient was very sick when he came to see him. The physician predicted the patient would only live for 100 days. However, Ling Ying doesn’t believe the nobleman took his own life or died from illness. You Huang gives her a dagger with insect oil on it, given by Xuan Ye. Ban Xia and Ting Zhou look for the bookstore, but instead their purse is snatched by a thief. Guide Song Qi happens to see the pickpocket, so he catches the thief and returns the purse to Ban Xia. He had never heard about the Enlightenment Bookstore, but offered to look for it. Ban Xia sees his shadow as a fish, so she refuses the help of the demon. Song Qi bumps into Jiang Shang Yun and Xue Qiao, and they know right away that he’s a demon. Ban Xia sees them chasing him, so she challenges the two as to why they attack someone who doesn’t do anything to them. They argue, and Xuan Ye shows up drawing a sword. After driving the angry demon hunters away, Xuan Ye is very angry at Ban Xia, and the two have a talk. However, when he sees her wounded hand, his anger subsides, and he tends to Ban Xia. Their cute moment is interrupted by Lyu Cun Mian, who says that someone wants to see Xuan Ye.
When Xuan Ye and his entourage come to the man’s place, they’re welcomed by a flying sword. Xuan Ye manages to defend them, and the man shows up. He introduces himself as Shen Tu Nan, or he wants to be called Uncle Master. The owner of the major bank in Underground City Xiaodongtian. He also has a replica of Xuan Ye’s swords, Hidden Dragon Case.
Episode 18
Shen Tu Nan is Xuan Ye’s father’s junior in the Eight Pillar Sect. He was expelled from the sect because he was in love with a fox demon. He also saved Xuan Ye from being beheaded after killing his family by going all the way to the Court of Judicial Review to plead. Shen Tu Nan agrees to help Xuan Ye and Ban Xia look for the Enlightenment Bookstore. They don’t say anything when he asks Xuan Ye and Ban Xia if they’re just friends. Xuan Ye simply says her case is a matter of demons, so he can’t say no, lol.
After the visitation, they go to eat, and Ban Xia tells them that she lied to the demon hunters that her relationship with Xuan Ye and Chi Xue is not close. She avoids Xuan Ye teasing her about a little ‘misunderstanding’ between her and the hunters, so she buys more noodles for him. While waiting at the noodle shop she is taunted by a beautiful snake demon.
Finally, they find the Bookstore with Shen Tu Nan’s help. The owner, Sha Man, is a demon. He acts like he knows nothing and no one. However, after Xuan Ye and Ban Xia leave, he hits his servant with a hammer. It turns out her servant is a paper demon, the same as the one in Cheng Du.
After a big meal, the lazy Chi Xue, too full to walk, becomes a rabbit so Ting Zhou can carry him back, lol. He pretends to sleep and overhears Ting Zhou telling Ban Xia that Xuan Ye likes her. It’s obvious! So, when he’s back, he suggests that Xuan Ye confess to Ban Xia. However, he’s still hesitated.

Song Qi is still hunted by Jiang Shang Yun and Xue Qiao at his home, now he has nowhere to go. Xuan Ye and Chi Xue find him badly wounded, so Xuan Ye takes him to Uncle Shen to recuperate.
The rest of the episode is geared towards the next arc, or subarc, where everyone is sucked into the paintings. Ling Ying gives You Huang the magic compass she bought. It should be able to point in the direction of the person you think about. She tried it before with You Huang. She likes him! It works because when he loses her, he uses the compass. It directs him to a painting. When he touches the painting, it sucks him in! Sha Man kidnaps Ban Xia, and when Xuan Ye is looking for her in the Bookstore, she gives him a hint. After smashing the Bookstore, fighting paper demons and Sha Man, both of them are sucked into the painting, without Xuan Ye’s swords! So, all of them are transported inside a painting called “A Springday in Guangping”.
Episode 19
Xuan Ye wakes up amongst three men, and he remembers that two of them are swordsmen, Xiang Shan and Xiang Feng. Now they call him Big Bro! Their names are Er Mao, San Mao, Si Mao, and Xuan Ye is now Da Mao, the eldest bro! He is in Guangping, but even the noodleshop owner doesn’t recognize him as Xuan Ye. His Hidden Dragon Case is on the floor outside the painting, and his Buer Bracelet becomes a regular object. His brother wants him to join them to carry a bridal sedan, as they are collecting money for his wedding. Realizing that he doesn’t have any magic power or his swords, Xuan Ye just plays along with his ‘brothers’ while looking for clues. The one Lord Huang who will get married is none other than Chu You Huang. And his bride? Not Sima Ling Ying but Duan Ban Xia! What a mess! But neither You Huang nor Ban Xia remembers their real identity. Because Xuan Ye pulls the bride’s veil, he’s thrown into the shed!
It appears to be a time loop, since the painting is just a one-day event. Xuan Ye wakes up again, sneaks into Ban Xia’s place, but she’s now Miss He Que Lian. However, Lord Huang interrupts him, and Xuan Ye tries to convince him by breaking the vase, which turns into ink. Xuan Ye is thrown into the shed again. In the third time loop, Xuan Ye gets help from his ‘brothers’. Although they’re stupid, they’re strong and loyal to their ‘big brother’. He says that he’s in love with Miss He, who will get married and whose bridal sedan chair they will carry. We need to abduct the bride! Miss He appears to understand and believe what he told her, but then she hits his head with a rock.
Episode 20
In the fourth time loop, they abduct the bride again. At this time, Xuan Ye ties He Que Lian up and throws away any object she can use to hit his head (again)! At this time, too, Xuan Ye doesn’t know what to say or to do to her, lol! The ‘brothers’ tell He Que Lian that their big bro is in love with her, so he snatched her and didn’t want to let go. But this ‘Ban Xia’ comes from a martial arts family, of course, she knows how to do martial arts on him. One brother wants to hit Que Lian with a brick, but Xuan Ye shields her, so he gets hit with a brick again. Unfortunately, people who search for her show up and they beat the crap of the brothers, especially Xuan Ye! (remember he can’t fight!) Seeing an unequal fight, she ends up beating the men with a stick like a pro martial artist and pulls Xuan Ye to run away. In a hiding space, she nags him for not being rich, powerful, or strong, and has to take care of 3 stupid brothers, yet wants to take her as bride. Lord Huang shows up and accuses Que Lian, his childhood sweetheart, of having an affair. He accidentally hits his head, so Xuan Ye and Que Lian run away again. Xuan Ye asks Que Lian to just spend the day with him until 9 pm (when the time loops again), so she agrees. After changing into regular clothes, they eat noodles. Xuan Ye happens to hear people talking about the Six Wonders of Guangping. There are six landmarks Xuan Ye knows in real life, but some are gone. They go to those places, but they’re still intact.
In the evening, before 9 pm arrives, Xuan Ye confesses his love, not to Que Lian, but to Ban Xia. He says that he hesitated because they are so different, he’s a demon hunter with a dangerous life, and she’s a sheltered girl with a peaceful life. Although Que Lian doesn’t understand him, she’s touched. The confession is romantically sad.
In the fifth loop, Xuan Ye feels calm, probably because he already ‘confessed’ to Ban Xia. The scene starts again with Damao waking and a plan to abduct the bride. However, things change! Suddenly, he hears his name, his original is being called. It’s Ban Xia, and she regains her memory! Xuan Ye explains that characters with real red blood are from the real world, but the ones with ink are a drawing. He thinks that her parents might be in one of the Six Wonders of Guangping. Lord Huang shows up, and Ban Xia (still with Que Lian’s martial arts skills) easily subdues him, and they tie him up. They try to explain to him who he is, etc, but he doesn’t get it, even though they act like bullies, lol!
Episode 21
There are three places of the Six Wonders of Guangping that they haven’t visited. They visit the nearby Ancient Matchmaking Tree first. Lol, Ban Xia asks Xuan Ye if he has been in the real Matchmaking Tree with someone in Guangping. When he says never, she says “That’s good,” and hides her smile. She makes a wish, then throws the wishing plate into the tree. It knocks down someone else’s plate, that turns out to be her father’s.
There is a young Taoist who does fortune-telling. Ban Xia asks about her family relationship, and the Taoists divine the reluctant Xuan Ye for matchmaking. Oh, oh, it’s inauspicious. Don’t tell me they won’t end up together!
The second last of the Six Wonders of Guangping is Faen Temple. While walking around, suddenly Xuan Ye sees his father, alive, passing by with a little son whom he also calls Xuan Ye. They go to the clinic, and Ban Xia pretends that she’s sick with various confusing symptoms that the father is suspicious that they will rob him, especially with Xuan Ye staring at him the whole time! When Xuan Ye asks to buy some herbs, including Moon Bug Insect Oil that repels demons, it’s clear that the man is also a demon hunter. However, he’s never heard about it. Ban Xia feigns illness again and shamelessly asks the mother to join the family dinner. It’s a memorable one, especially for Xuan Ye, who misses his family badly. After dinner, Ban Xia helps the mother wash dishes, and she guesses that Ban Xia and Xuan Ye are a couple. Meanwhile, Xuan Ye learns some fits techniques from the father. Ban Xia wonders why Xuan Ye’s parents and his little self are in the painting. The theory is that it took 60 years for the painter to paint, so the family is included.
Oh, apparently, Sima Ling Ying doesn’t enter the painting. She’s still in Underground City and threatens Shen Tu Nan’s assistant about the missing nobleman’s case.
The last of the Six Wonders of Guangping is The Night Banquet at the South Lake that is held by Lord Xin An. Ban Xia pretends to be a man and uses her cousin’s name. When asked to write a poem, she just wrote a poem that circulated a few years ago, so she knows she won’t plagiarize someone’s from the era. They’re so impressed that they ask her to write another one!
Meanwhile, Lord Huang subdues the Mao brothers and escapes. Now, he’s ready with a full force to get his fiancée back!
Episode 22
Ban Xia and Xuan Ye want to find out who the real humans are or if Lord Xin An is in this last place, so they offer to be sworn brothers with everyone at the banquet. After the swearing ceremony by dripping a few blood, all of their blood is ink! Ban Xia tries another way by performing a sword dance and cutting the drapes that divide them from Lord Xin An. But his seat is empty, so Lord Xin An doesn’t attend.
Lord Huang and his search party arrive. Lol, she uses the chance while they’re hiding and stand close to each other to confess that she likes him, and Lord Huang hears them. They run to the temple where the weeping statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva is located. Xuan Ye tests the statue by cutting it, and it bleeds blood! It starts crying, and Ban Xia is shocked that the statue is her mom. Later, a blind priest shows up, and it’s her father! He’s not only blind, but also mute and deaf! Ban Xia lets him touch her face to recognize her. While they reunite, the fireworks start. The time loop starts again!
Although Ban Xia and Xuan Ye already know what to do, it seems this will be a difficult cycle, since Sha Man, the Enlightenment Bookstore owner, escaped from prison and promised to retaliate. Ban Xia wonders if a demon sealed her father’s senses. Xuan Ye thinks that the demon captures her mom to be the statue and her dad to make her mom sad and cry, to create the weeping statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva, to make money. Lord Huang is no longer looking for her, since the prison break is more important. After finding out that the fugitive is Sha Man, they realize the painting world has changed. Ban Xia takes Lord Huang’s horse and together finds Sha Man. She tries to fight Sha Man, but he’s too strong and she… dies? Xuan Ye is taken to prison. This day goes so fast, and another cycle starts. Poor Xuan Ye, Ban Xia no longer remembers him, and the scenery has changed! Aha, Sha Man escapes from the painting, and now he’s redrawing it!
While Xuan Ye is looking around trying to find anything to help him and Ban Xia, a homeless guy advises him that it’s useless to run from the paintbrush no matter how fast. Aha! Finally, someone who knows about the world inside the painting, and he’s none other than Lord Xin An! He says that because he’s dying, Sha Man helped him to enter the painting to recycle his life day by day. But his servant didn’t accept the fact that they’re in the painting, so he died. Lord Xin An shows parts of his body that he’s disappearing. He says if they don’t accept the rule of the painting, they will also disappear. Xuan Ye is so devastated and depressed. The next day, Lord Xin An disappears and only leaves a pile of his clothes!
Something magical happens, tho. While Xuan Ye’s Ma Brothers are cooking, the delicious fragrance goes through the painting, and the moon bugs outside the painting smell food, and escape from the bottle where they are kept. However, Sha Man also wants to avenge (Xuan Ye?), he paint himself and some guards, and they will attack the painting world!
Episode 23
It’s chaos in the painting world. The ink guards attack the human, and they want to put Xuan Ye in prison.
Outside, luckily, finally, Sima Ling Ying realizes that her partner, You Huang, is missing! She scours the entire Underground City to find him. When she arrives at Enlightenment Bookstore, she sees the Magical Compass she gave him. She suspects Sha Man kidnap You Huang.
Omg… a plot twist! Xuan Ye figures out that his youngest ‘brother’ Si Mao is none other than the painter! He and the brothers say the same things at the beginning of the loop, and only Si Mao says differently. He is a demon under the name of “Mirage”. After achieving the highest cultivation, he traveled and arrived in Guangping. He fell for the city and captured it in a painting. However, he couldn’t capture the beauty and realized because there were no people in it. He started capturing humans and put them in the painting. He captured Ban Xia’s mom when he saw her crying for little Ban Xia, who was kidnapped. He captured her father and took out his senses to make her cry. Ban Xia hears it and attacks Mirage. Of course, he can’t be defeated. Mirage is surprised that Ban Xia remembers everything. The keyword is “moon”.
Xuan Ye states that Mirage is not an ancient divine beast but a Moon-fearing bug that obtained a primordial spirit to be a demon. Xuan Ye gets the revelation, because there has never seen a moon during the loop days. No wonder his moon bug smells the food he cooked. The revelation of Mirage is super interesting. However, although he is a bug, he cannot be defeated. But… suddenly the moon shines! What happened?
Outside, Sima Ling Ying is fighting Sha Man. She uses the dagger given by You Huang, smeared with insect oil, and stabs him with it. Sha Man starts to crumble into sand. Ling Ying sees a painting with a hole that gets bigger. Xuan Ye’s moon bugs are eating it. The moon gets bigger and bigger. Mirage disappears, and everyone who was captured in the painting is released! Including Ban Xia’s mother and father.
Aha, Xuan Ye’s background is revealed a little bit. When he rescued little Ban Xia, the sword that stabbed his body was thrown by his brother, Zi Kong, the First Prince. It seemed Zi Kong wanted to kill Ban Xia in the past. The sword didn’t kill Xuan Ye, but he and Ban Xia fell and disappeared from the Carefree Land. The sword is called Shao Li and belongs to Zi Kong. Man Ying’s blood stains it, and if he dies, the blood stain will disappear. Zi Kong has been looking for Man Ying, aka Second Prince, aka Xuan Ye, for 12 years, when the Carefree Land’s gate opens before their father acts.
Xuan Ye’s protective bracelet is hit by Mirage, so it’s broken. Ban Xia observes that Xuan Ye also doesn’t look well. Ting Zhou gossips with Ban Xia about Sima Ling Ying liking You Huang. Ban Xia teases Ting Zhou about liking Chi Xue. Ting Zhou thinks humans and demons can’t be together. Ting Zhou complains that Ban Xia won’t understand since she’s with Xuan Ye, a human. However, Ban Xia has a secret. When Mirage attacks Xuan Ye’s protective bracelet, suddenly Ban Xia sees Xuan Ye’s shadow is a big cat!
Episode 24
Awkward situation at the dinner, You Huang is extra nice to Ban Xia. It seems he still carries over Lord Huang’s feelings to his fiancée, He Que Lian. Don’t tell me they will make a ‘love triangle’ or ‘love square’! Sima Ling Ying is cool about it, tho, she tells You Huang: “You’re not my only choice,” and gives him a year to think about their relationship.
After dinner, Ban Xia and Xuan Ye take a walk, and Ban Xia demands clarification from Xuan Ye about their feelings. So, she remembers when he confessed his feelings in the painting world. Xuan Ye feels shy, but Ban Xia keeps talking, and he can’t hold himself back and kisses her near the Matchmaking Tree during the fireworks.
Xuan Ye’s two ‘brothers’ in the painting world stop by. Aww, they still call him “Big Brother”, although Xuan Ye prefers “Physician Jiu”. Now they’re Xiang Shan and Xiang Feng. They had a dispute with Xuan Ye before at the hotel in Underground City, so they apologize. They bring a letter from Uncle Shen, who informs Xuan Ye that he helped the painting world’s victims and Guide Song Qi return home. The Xiang brothers tell Xuan Ye how they entered the painting. They received a mission to search for the missing Lord Xin An. The lead directed them to the Bookstore, but they got attacked by Sha Man’s ink guards. Their youngest brother died on the spot and they got sucked into the painting.
Zi Kong, Man Ying’s brother, sneaks out of Carefree Land to find his brother, using his blood that stained his sword. He uses a demon spell to locate where Man Ying is. Of course, the Ganshan Clinic! Meanwhile, Xuan Ye can’t sleep and senses a demonic aura. Ban Xia sees him walking around the yard and joins him. They find out that Xuan Ye has been bitten by his moon bug (that apparently is controlled by Zi Kong to find Man Ying).
Ban Xia’s parents invite Xuan Ye to a dinner. They send Ban Xia away to fetch something, and thank Xuan Ye. Everything is back to normal, they will proceed with Ban Xia’s marriage to her fiancé, thanks to Xuan Ye. Earlier, Ban Xia’s father overhears people at the market talking about the murder many years ago in Ganshan Clinic.
Episode 25
Another murder case in Guangping. You Huang is called, and Xuan Ye tags along with him. The victim, Zhang Pu, was a government worker who had been missing for 6 years. They go to find Zhang Pu’s wife, Xing Xian. She’s a timid woman, and her husband beats her up when he’s drunk. Xing Xian didn’t look for her husband because he often travelled for a few months. While they are talking, a man walks by and gives Xing Xian a dirty look. Right after that, he slides and dies. Ban Xia, her friend Zhi Zhi, and Ting Zhou are also at the spot. Ban Xia saw the white crow on the man’s shoulder before he died, so she chased after him. She feels bad that she didn’t warn him before.
You Huang is so confused about his feelings for Ban Xia that he tells Wen Jian about it. Wen Jian tells him to knock it off, since Ban Xia likes Xuan Ye, and vice versa. Everyone knows it. Duh, this guy is so clueless. Yes, everyone knows it, including Ban Xia’s father, but he disagrees. At night, he comes to see Xuan Ye and begs him not to get close to Ban Xia.
Zi Kong is in Chengdu, the capital. Somehow, he’s mistaken that his brother lives in the Capital. He uses his power on someone who wants to trick him. Sima Ling Ying happens to eat nearby, and she notices that he is a demon right away. Zi Kong asks around for Man Ying. Ling Ying says she knows him and tries to attack him with her dagger smeared with insect oil. Although he notices the dagger, Zi Kong is very powerful and can easily subdue many guards.
Whatever he does affects Xuan Ye, because of the blood sucked by the moon bug that Zi Kong used to find him. He finds himself lying in the woods, far from Ganshan Clinic. Two travellers get in trouble with wolves, and Xuan Ye helps them. A young man and his coachman. The young man turns out to be Li Xian. He is Ban Xia’s fiancé, Li Xian, and goes to Guangping to fetch Ban Xia!
Ban Xia’s friend, Zhi Zhi, moves to a house next to Xing Xian. When Ban Xia and Zhi Zhi go to see Zhi Zhi’s new place, they witness Xing Xian being bullied by her late husband’s family and rescue her.
Because Ling Ying says that she knows Man Ying, Zi Kong kidnaps her. Ling Ying refuses to speak. Zi Kong changes senses with Xuan Ye; he hears Ban Xia call the name “Xuan Ye”. Now he gets a new name. Ling Ying promises she’ll take Zi Kong to see Xuan Ye if he promises to release her.
Ban Xia is annoyed that Xuan Ye avoids her. It makes sense, after Li Xian appears in the Ganshan Clinic and introduces Ban Xia, who is also shocked, as her fiancé. She chases Xuan Ye after he leaves her family. Ban Xia had already told her parents to break off her engagement with Li Xian, but now he’s here. She keeps trying to reach Xuan Ye, who keeps avoiding her, until he proposes a break up.
Episode 26
Oh, this is a heartbreaking scene! Xuan Ye intentionally says negative things about their relationship, but Ban Xia doesn’t want to hear them. They argue, reason, and counter-reason, and end up separate in the rain!
There is a case in Faen Temple that You Huang needs Xuan Ye’s help. A dead body, and it’s Xing Xian! We saw in the previous episode that she went to pray at this temple, pouring her heart out about her hard life. Even after her abusive husband died, she was still bullied by people. You Huang calls Xuan Ye, because he wants to rule out the demon cause. Ban Xia, who was with Xing Xian the day before she died, was asked if she saw a white crow on Xing Xian or not. Since Ban Xia didn’t see it, Xuan Ye deduced that Xing Xian is still alive.
You Huang, Xuan Ye, and Chi Xue dig out Xing Xian’s body, and the casket is empty! You Huang guesses that she faked her death, even her husband’s death is suspicious. Later, Xuan Ye asks Chi Xue to investigate the snakes that roam around the Faen Temple. Chi Xue, being a rabbit, is not happy that he has to investigate snakes!
We see Xing Xian is sleeping, then a big giant snake occupies her body. She wakes up as a man, and there is another man who looks exactly like her!
Wait… the fiancé, Li Xian, apparently knows the man or the snake demon (?). The snake plays music, and Li Xian calls him Mr. Bai. After Li Xian leaves, Mr. Bai locks the door and Mr. Bai’s lookalike, or Xing Xian, comes in. She asks who he is and he says that his name is Chi Lian. She gets what she wished for, to be a man. Xing Xian asks what he is. Chi Lian changes into a snake! Xing Xian passes out!
We’re back to Sima Ling Ying and Zi Kong. They’re on a boat to Guangping, and Ling Ying tries to run away. Of course, she’s no match for a black panther demon who finds out right away. Their hand-on-hand combat is so good! In my opinion, Sima Ling Ying and Zi Kong have good chemistry while throwing barbs at each other, better than her chemistry with Chu Hou Yuang!
Ban Xia and Ting Zhou go around the city looking for her fiancé to break off the engagement, but he’s like a social butterfly, having many more friends than the girls do. They come back home late and run into Xuan Ye. Ban Xia declares that she looked for Li Xian to break off the engagement, but not because of Xuan Ye! Xuan Ye suddenly feels pain, at the same time Zi Kong casts an incantation. Zi Kong and Xuan Ye change five senses briefly.
