Drama Recap Episodes 7 to 16
Episode 7
Luckily, it’s Xuan Ye’s trap. Ban Xia yells, asking the Demon where he took her father. Xuan Ye barges in and tells Ban Xia to take her bewitched maid outside, where Chu Xie and Wen Jian are waiting. The fighting scene is really cool! But darn it, this Chu You Huang is really annoying! He shows up and wants to fight the killer. Chi Wang Chuan uses the opportunity to escape through the reflection on Chu You Huang’s shiny sword. Later, Chu You Huang keeps staring at his sword with disbelief. Xuan Ye tells Wen Jian to buy all pears in the city so Chi Wang Chuan won’t bother other women. He pulls Ban Xia upstairs, ties her wrist with his, and tells her to poke him with a knife if Chi Wang Chuan shows up. Then he falls asleep. Chu Xie explains to the rest that Xuan Ye becomes very sleepy because he uses the mountain-moving sword. Another sword, Dubhe, makes him hungry. After a while, Ban Xia becomes very thirsty. When she grabs a pot of water, Xuan Ye turns around so the water pours onto his body. Ban Xia dries him up and sees a mark below his left shoulder.
Chu You Huang, probably trying to redeem himself, confiscates all the pears in the city and tells the people to ask the government for money, lol. Ji Li sees what happens and runs home, but she lies to Chi Wang Chuan that everything is okay. Later, she sneaks out to meet her lover. Zhou Jing Yuan wants to have a grand wedding, but Ji Li just wants them to get out of the city and live in a secluded place. Chi Wang Chuan seems to know that Ji Li cheats on him so he kills Zhou Jing Yuan, makes a jade pear of him, and forces Ji Li to eat it. Ugh!
While Chu You Huang is eating the pears he confiscated, his subordinate reports that a young scholar has been killed, and his body also ages, although until middle age. It’s Zhou Jing Yuan, and Ji Li is brokenhearted and mourns him for days. Chu You Huang, who watches every guest who comes to pay respect, notices her.
When Xuan Ye wakes up after three days of sleeping, Ban Xia asks him about the mark, but he doesn’t know where it comes from, as he doesn’t remember his childhood. Ban Xia wonders if he is Man Ying, her savior. We got to see her dream again, and that Man Ying shielded her from a spear thrown at her and got stabbed in the upper left chest. His blood splattered into Ban Xia’s left eye, and since then, she can see demons.
At the Clinic, Xuan Ye and Ban Xia bump into Ji Li, who bought rat poison and insect oil. Insect oil is used to ward off demons. Chu You Huang, who followed Ji Li, tells Xuan Ye and Ban Xia that she has mourned at the newest victim’s body for days. They decide to find Ji Li at the dance troupe office. Too late, Xu Zhi Zhi says that Ji Li has quit the troupe and left the city. They scour the entire City looking for Ji Li at inns. She’s on a mission to kill Chi Wang Chuan and treats him the last meal. But Chi Wang Chuan knows she wants to kill him and pulls her into a mirror and they enter a strange place. Chi Wang Chuan reminds Ji Li how she has started the Jade Pear when she was an old discarded dancer. She wished in front of the mirror to be young again. The Mirror Demon came, granted her wish, and he fell in love with the beautiful Ji Li. For twenty years, Ji Li has eaten the pears, thus, more than twenty people have been killed.
The group finds the inn where Ji Li is staying and searches the room. While standing in front of a mirror, Xuan Ye is pulled into the mirror, too!
Episode 8
Ban Xia is also pulled into the mirror, but Chu You Huang, who is an ordinary person without supernatural skills, cannot enter. Meanwhile, through mirrors, Ji Li has been shown her past. She has seduced many men. Chi Wang Chuan froze parts of her past in mirrors, especially the negative ones, so she doesn’t remember what happened. Xuan Ye shows up and meets Ban Xia. But he seems different, and cannot fight Chi Wang Chuan’s blows. The Demon mocks him that he has sealed a part of Xuan Ye that contains his strengths, in a mirror that Xuan Ye touched earlier. Upon hearing this, Ban Xia runs towards the mirror she saw earlier with Xuan Ye’s image on it and starts pounding it. Her right hand, which stores the magic charm, breaks the mirror, and the imprisoned part of Xuan Ye emerges with the weak part.
Before slashing Chi Wang Chuan, Xuan Ye implores of Ban Xia’s father’s whereabouts. Chi Wang Chuan tells them that he got an order from Demon Clan to capture Duan Ying Heng. However, a demon rescued Ban Xia’s father, cloned his body, and staged a fire with him in it. Sure enough, the man Ban Xia met after her late-night stroll visiting Xuan Ye was none other than her father. However, Chi Wang Chuan was in the room, too. Duan Ying Heng hurried her daughter up, and he was taken by Chi Wang Chuan. When Xuan Ye asked who was the demon who gave Chi Wang Chuan the order, he took advantage to send many white crows start attacking Xuan Ye and Ban Xia. Chi Wang Chuan tries to run away with Ji Li through a mirror, but Ban Xia manages to hold Ji Li and Xuan Ye stabs the Demon. After being stabbed, the mirrors containing Ji Li’s memories start breaking, and copies of angry Ji Lis jump out of the mirror and stab Chi Wang Chuan. The entire place is shaking. Ji Li tells Ban Xia and Xuan Ye to get out of the place since this is Chi Wang Chuan’s memory that is shattering. Ji Li doesn’t want to leave him, she will die with the man she hates and loves at the same time. At the last moment, Xuan Ye and Ban Xia manage to exit the mirror and fall in front of Wen Juan and Chu You Huang.
After this, Ban Xia and Ting Zhou go to the police station, asking Chu You Huang what happened to Xuan Ye’s family six years ago. We saw the flashback. Xuan Ye, at that time, was carefree and lazy; he didn’t study and help as much as his brother did at the Clinic. Somehow, he angered Miasma Demon, who sought revenge. The Demon deceived Xuan Ye’s father, Jiu Chang Min, and poisoned the mother, eldest son, and three workers, and they became zombies. Seeing no hope to cure them, Jiu Chang Min ordered Xuan Ye to kill them all. The father was also bitten by the mother, so he was dying. Before death, Jiu Chang Min tells Xuan Ye not to enter the Underground City, to keep the Bu’er Bracelet that protects him, to take care of Ganshan Clinic, to keep the Hidden Dragon Case safe, and to use the five swords wisely. Jiu Chang Min then kills himself. When Chu You Huang arrived, Xuan Ye said that he was the murderer since he was suicidal. But then his martial arts master arrived and convinced the Governor to release Xuan Ye. At that time, Chu You Huang didn’t believe demons existed, so he bothered Xuan Ye everywhere. Only a few days ago, after seeing Chi Wang Chuan disappeared through his own sword. Wen Juan then told him the fact about Jiu Family massacre. Chu You Huang didn’t know if Xuan Ye was injured when he was a child. He only knows from Wen Juan, that Xuan Ye used to be carefree and cocky. Ban Xia remembers the other part of Xuan Ye when he was split by Chi Wang Chuan had the similar personalities.
Episode 9
Now that the second case is closed, there is nothing to keep Ban Xia from meeting Xuan Ye, so she fakes illness and visits his Clinic to pester him into helping her to find her father. Her pestering is seen by none other than her cousin, Duan Yan Qiu, who manages to track Ban Xia down to Guanping. It’s easy, from the estate of Yuanzhou, the official home of Ban Xia and her father. She wrote home to ask for a lot of money to cover her living expenses in Guangping. Duan Yan Qiu states that Grandma is sick, so Ban Xia has to come home with him. He doesn’t believe her father is still alive and that his wife is a demon. Their argument is overheard by Xuan Ye, so he comes to help. Xuan Ye shows the official documents on Man Niang’s case that started from Guangping. When Duan Yan Qiu still doesn’t believe in demons, Xuan Ye calls the rabbit demon in to change to Chi Xue.
Poor Duan Yan Qiu is completely drunk, mourning over his dead wife, and mostly that she was a demon. Ban Xia comforted him by saying Man Niang’s last words before she died, that she loved her husband. Xuan Ye has to help Ban Xia and Ting Zhou carry Duan Yan Qiu to bed. When he’s leaving, he overhears Ting Zhou telling Ban Xia that Xuan Ye might like her, because he lies about Chi Xue not being home, so he comes over. In fact, Ting Zhou sees a rabbit eating in the Clinic’s yard. It turns out that it’s a real rabbit, and Chi Xue has it for a pet. To clarify, Xuan Ye takes Ban Xia to the Clinic and gives the rabbit to her, saying that the rabbit is Chi Xue’s wife, lol! Ban Xia has no clue that Xuan Ye wants to clarify her maid’s guess that he likes her, lol.
Luckily, Duan Yan Qiu is no longer forcing Ban Xia to return home, but to let her stay in Guangping and find her father with Xuan Ye’s help.
A cocky nobleman named Gao Sheng has been recklessly ridden his horse through the crowd these past years and hit or killed pedestrians in turn. In the last case, the victim is dead. Lord Geng Zhen, the Prefectural Governor of Guangping, sentenced him to death. However, in the night before the execution, a black cat sneaks into the jail cell and turns into a copycat of Gao Sheng. The clone gives the real Gao Sheng the jail key to run away. In exchange, the clone is executed. This is the same case with a demon that replaced Ban Xia’s father to burn himself and faked his death. Later, when a coroner wants to examine Gao Sheng’s body, he is killed by the cat demon.
Episode 10
There is a cute scene where Ban Xia dyes Xuan Ye’s hair because of some gray strands. Wow, how old is Xuan Ye? She used to dye her father’s hair, but of course, this is different. Them being close makes her nervous and clumsy, and she drips the dye hair over his clothes and trips. Luckily, Xuan Ye pulls her into his embrace to save her, and the romantic scene is interrupted by the rabbit demon!
The news about Gao Sheng’s beheading and the rumors that people see him come back alive spread all over the city. Chi Xue guesses that the case might be the same as Ban Xia’s; there is a life-swapping demon. Meanwhile, Ting Zhou reports to Ban Xia that Kong Tong Zi, the swindler who pretended to be a demon hunter they met yesterday, is dead. Ban Xia remembers seeing a white crow demon on Kong Tong Zi’s shoulder. She also saw a white crow spirit on the man who was killed by Gao Sheng’s reckless driving last time. Bai Xia runs to the Clinic to tell Xuan Ye. She runs into Wen Juan, who stops by the Clinic, and sees the white crow flying above Wen Juan! He freaks out when Bai Xia tells the rest about seeing the bad omen on Kong Tong Zi and the hit-and-run horse victim. Xuan Ye guesses that Chi Wang Chuan sends a curse on her because when they were inside his memory last time they were attacked by white birds. The scared Wen Juan goes home and says farewell to his confused and angry wife. Later, when he’s sleeping, there is a black cat (the same that visited Gao Sheng last time) on the rooftop!
Xuan Ye is contemplating using the Changle sword to save his best friend Wen Juan. This magic sword will show itself (meaning Xuan Ye can draw the sword) when the time for the cause and effect is right.
Meanwhile, Ban Xia’s cousin Duan Yan Qiu stops by a strange inn nobody stays in. They claim that they’re renovating it. The receptionist, Feng Wu Niang, the innkeeper’s daughter, seems interested in him. She also seems slow-witted. Yan Qiu orders food and wine. Although he’s cautious and has already tested the wine for poisoning, he’s still lured by an illusion of his wife in the woods. She ends up pulling him into a room. Yikes!
The next day, Ban Xia stops by the Clinic, and Xuan Ye looks like he didn’t sleep all night long thinking of ways to save Wen Juan. When they go out to Wen Juan’s home, they see him walking in the street in a daze. Wen Juan stops by workers putting up a sign, and the sign falls on Wen Juan, and he dies! Ban Xia sees a white crow flying out. They hold a funeral for him. Suddenly, like a miracle, Wen Juan walks out of the house! He has slept for a long time. Xuan Ye runs to see the corpse. There is no body, but a black cat runs away! Xuan Ye, Ban Xia, Wen Juan, and his wife then talk about the incident. Mrs. Wen acknowledges that she saw a black cat on the roof the night before her ‘husband’s death’. She believes the cat demon myth called Nine Lives Immortal, and gave money in exchange for her husband’s life. They set up a trap with Ban Xia as bait. Ban Xia comes to the place Mrs. Wen points out. Sure enough, Ban Xia sees a black cat, and when she mentions her name and her father’s name, the cat runs away. Ban Xia chases the cat with Xuan Ye and Wen Juan in tow.
Episode 11
The Nine Lives Immortal case becomes weirder when the cat demon leaves a box of its earnings in the Clinic’s yard. Wen Juan’s money is there, and also the pouch Ban Xia gave her father, full of money. It seems her father also borrowed a life from the demon. There is also a placard engraved with “Reunion Inn” on it. So, Xuan Ye, Ban Xia, and Chi Xue take a trip to the inn. Meanwhile, Chu You Huang and his team are investigating Gao Sheng’s case, somehow they end up in the same inn. Why do I feel this is also the same inn where poor Cousin ends up bewitched by the innkeeper’s daughter?
The closer Xuan Ye’s group gets to the inn, the weirder the surroundings. They get lost, and Xuan Ye has to ask the ginger demons for directions. When they finally arrive, the innkeeper refuses them. But his daughter, the one who accepted Yan Qiu, argues with her father, so he finally accepts the guests, although he’s suspicious that these are not ordinary guests. They play along with what the daughter says and suggests, including the hot spring. Xuan Ye walks around to check the situation. He happens to bump into a servant who holds his eye afterwards. Also, the black cat appears, and he follows it. He bumps into the innkeeper, who doesn’t like him wandering around. They heard Ban Xia’s screaming. She is inside the hot spring and starts imagining Man Ying again. She picks up something in the water, and it’s an eyeball! Ban Xia screams from the top of her lungs. However, she keeps the eyeball anyway; that is now just a wooden ball. The daughter and the inn staff are very hospitable, too hospitable that they’re suspicious. Xuan Ye has to stay with Ban Xia, because the daughter mistakenly thinks that they’re husband and wife. The inn is full choked with calming incense that makes Xuan Ye suspicious, since the inn is supposed to be under remodelling and doesn’t accept guests.
Episode 12
The next day, Xuan Ye and Ban Xia decide to fish out more information. Xuan Ye approaches the innkeeper Feng Tian, who used to be a soldier. Ban Xia approaches Wu Niang, the daughter, who seems to really like Ban Xia. Upon knowing that Xuan Ye is a demon hunter, Feng Tian warns his daughter. The black cat appears and disappears again. Xuan Ye feels the demon keeps bringing them to the same building. So, one night when no one is watching, Xuan Ye and Ban Xia sneak into the building again. Someone opens the door… It’s Yan Qiu! However, this Cousin behaves oddly and seems impatient to drive them away. He doesn’t even care when Xuan Ye holds Ban Xia’s hand and pulls her away. The Cousin was very strict with Ban Xia being with Xuan Ye last time!
Ban Xia is very concerned about what happened to her family. She thinks the demons take revenge on her ability to see them, so her father is missing, her cousin marries a demon, and now he is delusional. Xuan Ye comforts her that she has changed for the better because she’s now braver. Something gets into her eye, and he blows air into her eye. Chi Xue, who watches them, thinks Xuan Ye kissed Ban Xia, lol!
Luckily, Chu You Huang meets Xuan Yue and Ban Xia soon. They exchange information. You Huang says that they found Gao Sheng had died in the woods. His eyes are gauged, and his hair is cut. When they are at the inn, the servants tell them that beasts must’ve eaten Gao Sheng. But cut his hair??? I’m glad that You Huang and his subordinates are not bewitched like Yan Qiu! They’re also staying in the inn, but he investigates the innkeeper while his subordinate lures Feng Tian out with a false report of rats in their room. You Huang found out that Feng Tian is a legitimate human. So, who is the cat demon?
Ban Xia implores more to Feng Wu Niang about her cousin. The latter pretends she forgot completely about the guest because he never gets out of his room. Feng Wu Niang reveals that she has a brother who runs away, and someday she wants to run away, too. Feng Wu Niang asks if she can stay at Ban Xia’s house!
Episode 13
Chu You Huang’s subordinate, Yan Li, who brings the letter to Lord Geng Zhen, is killed by the Demon Cat, who we saw is a man. A villager found the body and is looking for Chu You Huang. Feng Tian is very angry and looks for his daughter, accusing her of killing the constable.
Ban Xia visits her cousin again, and he’s completely euphoric. He says he’s with his wife. Scaredly, Ban Xia sees with her left eye, the one that can see demons, but there is no Man Niang. Duan Yan Qiu has completely become delusional. Feng Wu Niang comes in with wine. Upon Ban Xia’s probing, the girl explains it’s Fubai Wine that can make guests see people they miss the most! Ban Xia is angry at Feng Wu Niang and forbids her from giving her Cousin wine anymore. Feng Wu Niang seems slow-witted and naive, but when she leaves, she has a suspicious look.
Meanwhile, Xuan Ye, You Huang, and Li Mao reconstruct the crime scene. They figure out that a servant who bumped into Xuan Ye last time might be the suspect. He lost his middle finger. Xuan Ye also finds a wooden ball (the eyeball). They bring the body to the inn, and You Huang orders Feng Tian to close the inn; nobody can go in or out. When Chi Xue passes the body, Xuan Ye asks him if he sees a man with four fingers only. In fact, Chi Xue just saw him leaving with Wu Niang! Everyone goes to find her who just happened to add a finger to the man. Therefore, they cannot arrest or interrogate the man. Feng Tian is very angry at her daughter, and they have a big fight.
Ban Xia is trying to knock some sense into her cousin. When Ban Xia leaves, she feels someone is following her. It’s Feng Wu Niang! She wants to kill Ban Xia now. Suddenly, the black cat shows up and meows at her. It runs away, and Ban Xia runs after it and runs into Xuan Ye. It seems the cat is rescuing her! Now Ban Xia thinks that, too! At the big meeting, she informs everyone about Fubai Wine, and to Xuan Ye that the Cat Demon is guiding her and not on the enemy’s side.
Xuan Ye visits Yan Qiu, and they drink the Fubai Wine together. He tells Ban Xia’s cousin that he killed everyone in the family. Therefore, when he misses them, he drinks the wine. However, he and Yan Qiu are different. He doesn’t have family anymore, but the other man still has them. Don’t wait until he doesn’t have family anymore. I love the man-to-man chat! Since Ban Xia’s nagging seems not to be working! It really knocks the sense of Yan Qiu, as he bids farewell to his wife’s illusion.
Ah, this is interesting! It seems the cat is Feng Tian’s son? The cat tries to get close to Feng Tian, but Wu Niang sends out a puppet demon to shoo it away. She threatens the cat that if it keeps trying to get close to Feng Tian, she’ll keep killing it, so the cat will use up its nine lives. Omg, she’s so creepy!
Episode 14
Things don’t look good! Xuan Ye is sick after drinking with Yan Qiu, and You Huang, who returns to Guangping City to get reinforcement, is ambushed by a bunch of inn’s servants who turn out to be puppets. Luckily, he already knows about demons, because every time he slashes the puppet’s limbs, they reattach to the body! Xuan Ye wakes up and tells Ban Xia that he gives You Huang something to protect himself.
Things get worse. Wu Niang captures EVERYONE and ties them up, including her father! She goes on and on with her crazy speech until someone interrupts her… yes, and that is Xuan Ye! He’s not sick, and our rabbit is free, too. While fighting Wu Niang, Chi Xue releases Ban Xia. Wu Niang runs outside, and Xuan Ye and Chi Xue are after her. The fight is really cool since Wu Niang uses puppet strings to control her puppet and other stuff. The scene where Chi Xue transforms into a rabbit that has to chew off the rope of the net that captures Xuan Ye and Chi Xue while being beaten up by Wu Niang’s puppet is hilarious! Although outnumbered, Xuan Ye and Chi Xue are on the winning side. Seeing this, Wu Niang runs away to where? To her room with a doll that looks exactly like Ban Xia! Meanwhile, Ban Xia and others are busy untying, but Li Mao is wounded. Ban Xia runs to Xuan Ye’s room to get medicine, but is intercepted by Wu Niang. Wu Niang takes Ban Xia to her room with Ban Xia’s puppet and becomes Ban Xia! But Wu Niang can’t kill Ban Xia because of Xuan Ye’s talisman. Ban Xia manages to run away with Xuan Ye’s sword.
Episode 15
While Ban Xia becomes a manhunt by the inn servants, Wu Niang in Ban Xia’s form joins the group. However, her behavior and talks are so weird that the group feels odd. Xuan Ye proves the fake Ban Xia by asking about the disappearance of the talisman on her hand. Wu Niang runs away and goes to her room. Her father escapes the group and finds out what his daughter did. He sees the lifeless Wu Niang’s body and all the body parts she has collected by killing people. Xuan Ye searches for the real Ban Xia, who takes his sword. When Wu Niang counters her and Xuan Ye, Ban Xia can easily prove herself by covering her right eye as a sign, since only Xuan Ye knows that Ban Xia can see demons in her left eye. Xuan Ye unsheathes his sword and fights Wu Niang. But Wu Niang calls her army of servant puppets.. Although Xuan Ye can fight them and is still holding Ban Xia, the puppets regenerate. Finally, he uses a fire sword to burn them, even burning the environment. When the puppets are all burned and Wu Niang is left, her father comes begging Xuan Ye to let his daughter live. He wants to reform Wu Niang. But she still wants to kill Xuan Ye and Ban Xia, so Feng Tian kills his daughter and throws her into the fire, and she becomes a puppet. He’s so devastated about what his daughter turned to be and kills himself. But the Demon Cat comes and replaces its last life with Feng Tian’s. Ban Xia asks it: “Is it worth it?” Yes, it’s worth it for the cat.
So, who is the cat? The answer lies with Feng Tian, who is back alive, thanks to his pet cat. He then remembers that many years ago, during a famine, Feng Tian saved a little black cat. They were together for years until a strange man came and taught Feng Tian how to make puppets. He made two, a male and a female (Wu Niang). It seems Wu Niang killed the male puppet. Then he built the Reunion Inn. Feng Tian thinks the cat left, but it was always there, but Wu Niang kept blocking it to get close to Feng Tian. The cat planned elaborately to take Feng Tian out of the place by selling its eight lives to save people, and brought Xuan Ye and the rest here. Yes, the cat is indeed the Cat Demon.
After everything is over, Ban Xia has a lot of questions for Xuan Ye. He explains that he finds out about the eyeballs being demons other than Cat Demon at the inn. The eyeballs are Wu Niang’s spies. He secretly contacted You Hang and Cat Demon. He secretly communicated with Ban Xia through handwriting to act worried because he would fake an illness. He also secretly communicated with Yan Qiu through handwriting during their drinking session that Ban Xia is in danger and they need Yan Qiu’s help. Although the Fubai wine is strong, if a human’s will is stronger, it overcomes the wine. When Ban Xia asks if Xuan Ye drinks Fubai wine habitually, he doesn’t say anything and takes her to eat noodles. When the noodle shop owner thinks that Ban Xia is Xuan Ye’s gf, they feel awkward, but nobody denies it. The rest of the episode is cute interactions between the two, including the mandatory piggyback.
Episode 16
You Huang delivers a letter from his boss to the Minister of Judicial Review in Chengdu. He used to work there, so he gets together with his colleague and bumps into Sima Ling Yin. She used to be his colleague, but now she has been promoted to the Court of Judicial Review Commissioner. You Huang and Ling Yin were a thing in the past. The meeting is a bit awkward, and his former colleagues urge him to walk Ling Yin home. Now we know that You Huang saved her brother six years ago. At that time, she vowed that she would marry any man who saved her brother. Her influential and wealthy family then proposed the marriage, but he felt pressure, so he moved to Guangping. She became a laughing stock in Chengdu. You Huang argues that there should be mutual affection, and he doesn’t want to use marriage to advance his career and status. While they’re arguing, a man is chased down and stabbed. After he falls, he becomes paper!
Business is slow, and there is no demonic case. Chi Xue is bored, so he rummages through Xuan Ye’s papers. He learns calligraphy using the letters and makes origami. Xuan Ye is annoyed by Chi Xue’s nagging not to go to the Underground City, so he throws away Chi Xue’s origami. It’s a bird, so it flies next door and lands on Ban Xia’s feet. She thinks it’s a love letter, lol, but when she opens the letter, it’s written “Tang Ru Yun”. It’s Ban Xia’s mother’s name!
Ban Xia finds Xuan Ye for clarification. She thought her mother had died 12 years ago, but the letter was written 3 years ago. The letter is found in the Cat Demon’s box given to Xuan Ye. Now she even heard from Chi Xue that the Fire Sword Xuan Ye used last time to finish off the puppet demons shortens his life span. She comes again, dyeing his hair, but she can’t stop crying.
