It has been a while since I watched a xianxia drama. When Fate Chooses You premiered, I was thrilled but hesitated to start. The leading actor, Ren Jialun (also known as Allen Ren), has a bit of a reputation for appearing in dramas with bittersweet or outright sad endings—especially in historical and xianxia genres.

Then, I read that the director (Guo Hu) stated on Weibo that it will be a happy ending (translated source). Whether it will be a really happy ending or an implied happy ending, if you like the thrill of uncertainty, let’s start the angst together!

Synopsis

The series revolves around Lu Qianqiao’s efforts to preserve the bloodline of his Ghost Warrior Clan, where he must first break the curse and reincarnate as a human. For this chance of survival, he must undergo the five stages of changing his skin, flesh, bones, blood, and heart. Borrowing the identity of the corrupt official Lu Huai, he marries Xin Mei, an immortal cultivator with a Taoist body and a spiritual root despite being a jinx to her husband. After being dismembered, Qianqiao plans to fake his death and escape, never to see Mei again. Prologue

There existed a race of War Demons in the world, who defied the laws of heaven and disrespected the gods, thus incurring divine abhorrence. The gods cast five curses upon them, including hot-blooded mania, inability to feel pain, no rest, no colors to see, and tasting everything like rot. This divine punishment was to last a thousand years. But as the term neared its end, the heavenly ladder was severed, and the gods disappeared.

For the sake of salvation, the War Demons sought the sacred seeds of the Jianmu Tree to rebuild the heavenly ladder. However, the Jianmu Tree was a divine creation that required ten thousand years to mature. The War Demons planned to sacrifice half of all living beings to accelerate the divine tree’s growth. This act violated heavenly laws, causing humans and the Youhu (Fox Clan) to join forces against them. In the end, under the leadership of the Youhu Clan’s Priest Yuan Zhong and the human immortal sects, they completely exterminated the War Demons.

The Great Dao holds 50 paths, while heaven manifests 49, leaving one for humans. If War Demons wish to be reborn as humans, ascending to heaven to seek the gods is not necessarily their only choice. Episode 1

Xin Mei, our Female Lead, had been a cultivator for sixty years, yet her appearance was unchanged. She was cursed with a fate that brought death to her husbands. Xin Mei needed to marry three times to break the curse. The two previously betrothed partners had passed away; now, she looked for a death row inmate to marry and found Lu Huai, our Male Lead. Lu Huai agreed because he had no family and only wanted someone to burn joss paper for him after his death.

After they both agreed, Lu Huai gave her money to buy wedding supplies and the Green Lotus Treasure Jade Ring he claimed was a protective magical ring.

Their wedding, which was held inside the prison cell, was simple but beautiful. Constable Chu Ying officiated the ceremony. After the wedding, Lu Huai asked Xin Mei to take care of his flower, Hidden Heart Orchid. She went to his house to pick up the potted flower and encountered two little beggars.

Episode 2

Xin Mei saw that Lu Huai’s house was very simple, unlike a typical house of a corrupt official. That was the verdict on Lu Huai that he accepted bribes. Xin Mei also encountered a scholar named Tang You who declared that Lu Huai was not guilty. She went to see Lu Huai on the day before his execution and suggested that he address his grievance, but he refused.

Xin Mei left Wei County after her business was done and met Tang You again in an inn. Tang You explained to her about Lu Huai’s case, which he thought was strange and unfair. Xin Mei rushed towards the execution ground, but she was too late. According to the guards, Lu Huai was executed with 1000 cuts. Xin Mei was so aggrieved that she triggered a heavy snow in June, a sign of heavenly injustice.

At night, she stole Lu Huai’s body, which was supposed to be a public display, and buried him in her graveyard plot. When she left, she saw the two little beggars again and paid their final respect to Lu Huai.

A few days later, Constable Chu Ying resigned from his position. He dug up Lu Huai’s grave, and Lu Huai was alive! Nobody knew, but Lu Huai was actually a War Demon from the War Ghost Tribe named Lu Qianqiao, and Chu Ying was his aide, also a demon. Lu Qianqiao had to endure five trials to be a human: the peeling of skin, the slicing of flesh, the stripping of bone, the purifying of blood, and the carving out of the heart. The execution had served as the first two trials. They would go to the next trial in Chongling Valley.

Episode 3

Meanwhile, Xin Mei could not let go of the injustice her new husband suffered. She decided to go to the Capital to address the grievance. She also had a death list of the people who were guilty of making her husband a scapegoat for their dirty deeds. First, she stopped the carriage of Song Qingbao, the Central Secretariat Head Clerk, to confirm the names of the guilty ones (and bullied him in the process, lol!)

Lu Qianqiao and Chu Ying arrived at Safe Haven Inn and met the bounty guard Meishan Jun. Xin Mei also met Meishan Jun last time. Meishan Jun caught a criminal and brought him to an official on his trip, who happened to be Mr. Song. Mr. Song, who was distressed because of Xin Mei’s life threat, sought refuge in Safe Haven Inn. Fearing that Mr. Song might recognize them, Lu Qianqiao and Chu Ying sat secretly in the back while listening to Mr. Song and Meishan Jun’s convo. Lu Qianqiao and Chu Ying were surprised that Mr. Song was talking about Xin Mei, who was seeking justice for her late husband, Lu Huai! He had a reason to be afraid, because Xin Mei went on a killing spree, according to the list she made and confirmed by Mr. Song.

Soon, Safe Haven Inn was even more crowded with a bunch of esteemed cultivators from various sects in the hunt for Xin Mei: Jiang Ji and Lin Muhan from Lingji Mountain were sent by their master; Zuo Yingying from Beixiang Qinghong Sect just joined the fun; Jin Lun, an independent cultivator, and Nangong Guhong from the Solar and Lunar Cavern.

Episode 4

Li Niang, the innkeeper, didn’t like these cultivator guests because they had fought, which was against the inn’s rule. They also had broken some furniture, but didn’t want to pay for the damage. After Mr. Song and his guards retired to their rooms, she wanted to poison the cultivators to incapacitate them. They found out and confronted her. They ended up fighting, but Li Niang and her staff were no match for these cultivators. Just when Lin Muhan was about to deliver his powerful blow to Li Niang, Lu Qianqiao blocked him. Lin Muhan was surprised that a mere human could block his blow. This mysterious man’s cultivation level seemed to be at the transcendental level. Lin Muhan then gave Li Niang a Yangyuan Pill, which could enhance the cultivation level and healing, as a settlement payment.

When the cultivators left with Mr. Song towards the Capital, Lu Qianqiao and Chu Ying decided to go to the Capital to rescue Xin Mei. She wouldn’t be able to withstand a bunch of cultivators ganging up against her.

At Xin Xie Manor, where Xin Mei came from, her sect sister A Sheng heard about the news. Their master only knew that Xin Mei wanted to visit her relatives, not get married, and was now on a mission to avenge her husband! A Sheng set off to find out the truth about Xin Mei.

Xin Mei had already reached the top dog of the criminals, Liang Wenjing, the Minister of the Court of Judicial Review. However, he had a cultivator backing, the leader of the Qinghong sect, Mr. Gui. She tricked the old master into destroying the gate of Liang Manor. He used a set of formations to turn back time when his cultivation was at its strongest, thinking that at that time she was a rookie. But he didn’t expect that Xin Mei had the Heavenly Spiritual Root and that her cultivation had reached the peak of the Golden Core realm by then. Xin Mei killed Mr. Gui within his own formation, but she collapsed from exhaustion.

Meanwhile, on her way to find her sister, A Sheng was followed by Jin Lun, who had seen her healing a child earlier. She was not in the mood to make friends along the way, so she warned him not to follow her anymore. Will we see a secondary couple?

The two little beggars, whose names were Lu Jiujiu and Lu Xiaodao, were Lu Huai’s foster children. They retrieved the unconscious and injured Xin Mei and hid her. However, the cultivators had arrived at the Capital and used their powerful magic to locate Xin Mei’s hideout. Lu Qianqiao and Chu Ying also arrived at the Capital and noticed the magic used, and decided to either find Xin Mei first or interfere with the cultivators.
